I adore horror anthologies and have since I was young and\nwatched the incredible George A. Romero film Creepshow<\/em> (1982). I was\ndefinitely younger than I should have been when first watching the movie, but\nit inspired me to catch up with several other top-notch titles over the years,\nincluding Dead of Night<\/em> (1945), Tales from the Crypt<\/em> (1972) and\nmany others. Trick \u2018r Treat<\/em> is one title I caught as an adult and\nbelieve stands among those listed above as the best anthologies out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrow Video is giving the picture a new 4K Ultra HD \u201cLimited\nEdition\u201d with a brand-new restoration approved by director Michael Dougherty.\nThe results are fantastic and the movie looks better than ever. The Halloween\nsets and costumes pop off the screen, making this edition an absolute joy to\nbehold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you haven\u2019t seen the movie, it is set in an Ohio town on\nHalloween. Everyone is going about their holiday-related activities and the\nfilm focuses on four different stories. One involves a high-school principal\nand father (Dylan Baker) who happens to be a serial killer trying to bury a\nbody in his backyard without his son, or his neighbors, finding out. There is a\ntale about a group of kids who head out to a quarry to play a prank with deadly\nresults. Another story involves a shy student (Anna Paquin) looking for a date\nto accompany her to a Halloween party. And the last story features a cranky old\nman (Brian Cox) going toe-to-toe with a memorably monstrous trick-or-treater\nnamed Sam (Quinn Lord).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film has a great visual style, with bright d\u00e9cor up\neverywhere, making the sets and locations shine magnificently. The stories\nthemselves are all engaging, with plenty of twists and turns throughout. The\nactors are phenomenal, with Baker, Cox, Paquin and the others all making\nmemorable impressions. Various characters make surprise appearances in other\nstories, walking by in the background or getting involved in the proceedings.\nThe movie doesn\u2019t actually have a linear narrative, meaning that you never know\nexactly who will pop up at any time, adding to the fun. The dark sense of humor\nalso works and the jokes are almost all on-point. And finally, the malicious\ntrick-or-treater Sam is an iconic mini-monster that is  impossible to\nforget (and is now a familiar face to horror movie fans). This is a fantastic\ntitle that any horror fan will appreciate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you might expect, the disc is marvelous as well. Yes, the\nimage quality is top-notch and so sharp that all the background details are\nclearly visible. You can literally read so much more onscreen that there\u2019s an\nadded layer of enjoyment in revisiting the film and looking in the corners of\nthe frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new extras are also enjoyable. Of course, there is an\narchived Dougherty and crew commentary track, but there is a new commentary\nwith the writer\/director moderated by the Dead Meat<\/em> podcast. It\u2019s very\ninformal and friendly, delivering more little-known facts about the picture. It\nseems that Doughtery spent several years developing the movie, creating his own\nproduction art that was passed on to the crew members to get the right look and\nfeel for the film. He notes all of the changes he made through various drafts,\nand that the stories didn\u2019t really intersect or jump around in time until later\nversions of his script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dougherty notes that, in telling the story, he was\npresenting Halloween from four different perspectives. One is told from the\npoint-of-view of a child, another from the perspective of a young woman, a\nthird from an adult, and the last seeing the holiday through the eyes of a\nsenior. It is very apparent after hearing this, but never occurred to this\nreviewer before (or the podcasters). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The director also goes into his own Halloween traditions and\ntells stories about the making of the picture and why Warner Bros. wouldn\u2019t get\nbehind it. It seems that J-horror and Saw<\/em>-esque movies were trending,\nand while he believed his film was ahead of the curve, the studio was scared at\nthis film\u2019s commercial prospects. However, he is pleased that it did find its\naudience on disc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doughtery also mentions how great the cast were to work\nwith, most notably Brian Cox, who apparently was having a blast with his role.\nHe says that the actor saw the film for the first time with a huge audience at\nthe San Diego Comic-Con and had an exceptional time watching the picture with\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he mentions that he has a completed script for a sequel(!) and that he\u2019d be pleased to start shooting, but that he won\u2019t unless he is given complete freedom by any potential producers to make it his way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another bonus is an interview with actor Quinn Lord, who\nplays the villainous Sam. He was a youngster at the time and remembers being\nsuited up in the monster costume. The actor notes how much fun he had and that\nit was a really enjoyable experience stalking characters on camera. In fact,\nthe only thing he regrets about the shoot was not being able to do all the\nstunts because of safety concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a discussion with the director of photography,\nwho notes Dougherty\u2019s enthusiasm for the project and recalls being presented\nwith all of the art for the film. He says the filmmaker\u2019s enthusiasm was\ninfectious and talks about the shoot and creating the film\u2019s distinctive look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, there are interviews with the production\ndesigner and the costume designer. The first individual also notes working off\nof the director\u2019s own art and ideas and being proud of how it all came\ntogether. The movie was shot in Vancouver, Canada, and he remembers having to\nhelp create a wooded area on a soundstage for the party scene after a storm\ndestroyed the original shooting location in Stanley Park. The new discussion\nabout costumes goes into how Sam\u2019s was made, as well as the other notable get-ups\nfeatured in the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a new feature with effects designer Patrick\nTatopoulos and the enjoyable time he had working on the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, you\u2019ll get all of the archival extras from\nearlier editions. This includes cast and crew interviews, featurettes on the\nmovie\u2019s creation, production, release and fandom. There is a 1996 short film\nmade by Dougherty that includes the Sam character, a history of Halloween\nnarrated by Brain Cox, deleted and alternate scenes with commentary, concept\nart, promos for the film, publicity materials, a comic book set in the world of\nthe characters and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As if that wasn\u2019t enough, you\u2019ll also get a double-sided\nreversible sleeve with original and new artwork, a foldout poster, six artcards\nand an illustrated collector\u2019s booklet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trick \u2018r Treat<\/em> is not only an excellent Halloween\nfilm, but also one of the best anthology titles out there. This \u201cLimited\nEdition\u201d 4K Ultra HD package is exceptional.
