When Genovese plots to assassinate\nCostello, the aging leader of the organization decides to retire and turn his\ngang over to the ambitious underling. But the paranoid Genovese believes his\nemployer is playing a trick, and brutal violence ultimately erupts. More\nmembers of the press were negative about this picture than positive. Almost half\nwere impressed by the lead actor\u2019s dual performances as both Costello and\nGenovese, and thought it was an effective gangster movie with impressive\ncinematography. Alas, slightly more found the double-role concept gimmicky and\nthe storytelling derivative, stating that you\u2019d be better off watching earlier,\nstronger pictures with the film\u2019s star. The cast includes Robert De Niro, Debra\nMessing, Cosmo Jarvis and Kathrine Narducci. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nBEING MARIA \u2013 Here\u2019s a biopic that tells the story of\nactress Maria Schnieder and her experiences working on Last Tango in Paris<\/em>,\nan early 1970s erotic drama from famed director Bernardo Bertolucci. It begins\nwith the 19-year-old woman landing a leading role in the movie opposite\nsuperstar Marlon Brando. The shoot begins well, but takes a turn while shooting\na very explicit sex scene. When the film is released, it generates huge\ncontroversy and scrutiny, and the young performer struggles to deal with the\nattention. This French feature earned slightly more recommendations than pans.\nClose to half complained that while the film was earnest, it lacked depth and\nnuance, losing its momentum and focus as it progressed. Slightly more thought\nthe story was important and that the cast were compelling enough to keep them\nwatching. It stars Anamaria Vartolomei, C\u00e9leste Brunnquell, Giuseppe Maggio,\nYvan Attal and Matt Dillon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BOTTOMS \u2013 This independent comedy (produced by Elizabeth\nBanks) involves two lesbian high school seniors. The pair accidentally get into\nan altercation with a senior football player and are suddenly branded as\nviolent delinquents. Hoping to lose their virginity before graduation, the\nprotagonists use the rumors to start a fight club, all in the hopes of hooking\nup with cheerleaders and popular female students. This picture was released to\npositive notices on streaming platforms in late 2023, and now is arriving on\ndisc. A small number of critics commented that while the movie was attempting\nto celebrate feminism, it seemed to present contradictory messages and missed\nthe mark with many jokes. However, everyone else called the film hilariously\nsilly and subversive. They were also pleased to see a LGBTQ comedy with\npolitically incorrect, gross-out humor. Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, Ruby Cruz,\nHavana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber and Nicholas Galitzine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE COLORS WITHIN \u2013 A lonely high school student with\nSynesthesia sees her fellow students and others in her life exuding various\ncolors. After being impressed by the vibrant hues of another female student,\nshe follows the individual, hoping to be friends with her. They eventually meet\noutside of class and form a secret band with another male outcast. The three\ncompose music and try to help each other deal with family conflict. This\nJapanese animated feature has garnered a number of good reviews. A handful of\nreviewers found the story slow-moving and didn\u2019t think there was enough drama\nto maintain their interest. But the majority found the movie to be a low-key\nand sweet coming-of-age tale with a number of catchy tunes. This Blu-ray\ncontains both an English-language and Japanese-language version (with English\nsubtitles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP: A LOONEY TUNES MOVIE \u2013 Using\n1950s science-fiction B-movies as inspiration, this feature-length animated\ntitle from Looney Tunes<\/em> finds Daffy Duck and Porky Pig trying to run a\nsuccessful farm. Facing eviction after a home inspection goes horribly wrong,\nthe pair learn that a UFO has crashed nearby. Even worse, an alien substance\nfrom the ship has made its way into a local gum factory. Everyone who chews the\ngum turns into a zombie, and the protagonists are forced to save the planet.\nThis picture was completed by Warner Bros. back in 2023, but corporate\nrestructuring resulted in it being shelved. Another distributor picked up the\ntheatrical and disc release rights. Write-ups were upbeat for this title. A\nsmall contingent couldn\u2019t help but compare the film to the classic cartoons and\nfound this effort lacking the same classic zip and energy. Still, all others\nwere very amused, stating that this was a well-produced and charming feature\nwith plenty of sharp jokes and references that would keep viewers in stitches.\nThe voice cast includes Eric Bauza, Candi Milo and Peter MacNico. <\/p>\n\n\n\n MAGAZINE DREAMS \u2013 Here is another film that has suffered\ndistribution woes. The plot follows a psychologically disturbed grocery store\nemployee who becomes obsessed with bodybuilding. Determined to compete\nprofessionally, he begins abusing steroids. It isn\u2019t long before the drugs\nbegin to cause many side-effects, including periods of depression and rage. The\nlead\u2019s mental state spirals and he begins acting out violently. This picture\nwas initially picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight, and was considered\na 2023 awards contender. This was until the film\u2019s star became embroiled in a\nscandal. A new distributor has finally picked up the picture and is putting it\nout as a DVD-only release. The majority of reviewers who saw the film rated it\nhighly. About one-fifth of them stated that the lead character was difficult to\nrelate to and that it was tough to endure his downward journey. However, the\nmajority were impressed with the lead performance and called the film an\nincredible, and painful to watch, character study of mental illness. The film\nstars Jonahtan Majors, Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige and Mike O\u2019Hearn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n OCTOBER 8 \u2013 This documentary is concerned with the rise of\nanti-Semitism after the events of October 7th<\/sup>, 2023 when Hamas\nattacked Israel. The filmmaker goes to college campuses and notes voices and\nopinions on the street and in social media, interviewing various individuals\nand getting their feedback on the conflict. More critics liked the movie than\ndisliked it, but there were a range of opinions. Almost one-third stated that\nthe film did have a few reasonable arguments, but warned that it also promoted\ndebunked and baseless conspiracy theories. They felt that it was attempting to\nspread panic on the part of viewers. Most of those who gave the feature a pass\ndid admit that some of its tangents were ineffective, but still called the\nmovie relevant, at the very least providing a picture of current tensions in\nthe world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE PROSECUTOR \u2013 Based on an actual 2016 drug trafficking\ncase, this Hong Kong crime picture involves a police officer who becomes\ndisillusioned with his job. He decides to become a lawyer instead. Years later\nas a public prosecutor, the lead takes on a trial involving drug smuggling.\nAfter looking into details involving the crime, he believes that the accused is\ntaking the fall for the real villain, who happens to be a high-profile figure\nin his line of work. The picture stars and was directed by Donnie Yen, and it\nwas well-received by the press. One or two didn\u2019t think the mix of action and\ncourtroom drama worked well, calling it poorly paced with an inconsistent tone.\nBut the consensus was that while the plot was predictable, the lead was as\ncharismatic as ever and that the fight scenes were well-choreographed and\nexciting. The movie is available either on 4K Ultra HD or Blu-ray. Besides Yen,\nit features Julian Cheung, Francis Ng, MC Cheung Tin-fu and Kent Cheng.<\/p>\n\n\n\n QUEER \u2013 A gay American expat living in Mexico City spends\nhis free time in bars with other expats. He meets a young GI from the US and\nthe two become friendly, eventually developing a close relationship. The\nprotagonist reveals many personal details, including his drug addiction.\nHowever, his lover keeps him at a distance. They eventually go on a trip\ntogether to the jungle and try to define their complicated connection. This\ndrama, based on a novella by William S. Burroughs, received more positive write-ups\nthan negative ones. Those who disliked the film stated that the performances\nwere excellent, but that the story was muddled and the situations presented\nlacked emotional truth. Still, three-quarters were impressed with the movie\u2019s\nlevel of intimacy and thought it was a bold and trippy look into loneliness and\nheartbreak. Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville and\nHenrique Zaga headline the picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n RULE BREAKERS \u2013 In Taliban-run Afghanistan, a woman decides\nto learn as much as she can about computers and writing code. Despite receiving\nthreats for her aspirations, she accomplishes her goal and then decides to take\nthings a step further. The lead recruits a large group of girls and women,\nhelping teach them everything she knows. Inspired, the entire group ends up\nentering an international robotics competition, making waves and impressing all\nin attendance. This film is based on a true story and most critics enjoyed it.\nA small contingent stated that the storytelling was bland, generic, and even a\nbit jingoistic, suggesting that while it was based on truth, it failed to\ndeliver believable drama. Yet most wrote that the film was well-intentioned,\nfeatured a strong cast and kept viewers engrossed. They believed it would\nlikely inspire and impress those who give it a chance. It features Nikohl\nBoosheri, Ali Fazal and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n STEPPENWOLF \u2013 Set in Kazakhstan, this Russian-language\nthriller follows a desperate mother searching for her missing son during a\nbrutal civil war. When she learns her child has been taken by\norgan-traffickers, she hires an ex-detective to do whatever he has to help her\naccomplish her goal. The employee ruthlessly captures and tortures suspects\nuntil they find they find those responsible for the kidnapping. The press gave\nthis effort good marks. Those who disliked the film called it unpleasant in the\nextreme, commenting that the filmmaker went to any length to shock and disturb\nviewers. Still, most admired what they saw, calling the movie visually\nstriking. They appreciated it as a very violent neo-western with a grim but\ndarkly amusing tone that also delivered some social commentary along the way.\nThe cast includes Berik Aytzhanov and Anna Starchenko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n WILLIAM TELL \u2013 This English-language, multi-national\nEuropean co-production is set in 1307 and tells the story of the mythic title\ncharacter (apparently, there is no evidence that a real William Tell actually\nexisted). This Swiss figure finds his country in danger when Austrian forces\ninvade and begin causing havoc. Tell decides to rise up against the\nheavily-armed enemy and leads his own group of soldiers to fight back. The\nfinal results split reviewers, although slightly more recommended the film than\nsuggested passing on it. Nearly half described the picture as over-the-top and\nsilly, with an overly serious tone that made the drama seem ridiculous. The\nsame number and a few more were forgiving, stating that the movie was a\nthrowback to old-school epics and that it did deliver impressive battle scenes\nthat would entertain. Claes Bang, Tobias Jowett, Connor Swindels, Ellie Bamber,\nJonah Hauer-King, Emily Beecham, Rafe Spall and Ben Kingsley heading the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE WOMAN IN THE YARD \u2013 A widow and her family try to adjust\nto life on a country farm at the beginning of this horror film. But it turns\nout to be a tough transition, especially when a woman cloaked in black appears\nout of the blue in their yard. The protagonist confronts the figure, only to\nrealize that the mysterious individual may be of supernatural origin. She\nattempts to protect her family as the foe threatens them, moving closer and\ncloser to their door. Alas, write-ups were not particularly positive for the\ntitle. Almost half complimented the atmosphere and noted that the film was\nsimple but effective in introducing its threat and delivering some jolts.\nRegardless, the majority suggested that the premise wasn\u2019t enough to sustain a\nfeature movie and that the end result felt slow and padded out, closer to a\nTV-movie than a cinematic feature. It stars Danielle Deadwyler, Okwu\nOkpokwasili, Peyton Jackson and Estella Kahiha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The edition also contains numerous older features receiving\nhigh-definition upgrades, so let\u2019s get through them as efficiently as possible.\n88 Films is releasing a Blu-ray of Gate of Flesh<\/em> (1988) aka Carmen\n1945<\/em> aka Nikutai no Mon<\/em>, a crime drama from Japan. Set just after\nthe end of World War II when the country was under US occupation, a group of\nwomen are forced to resort to prostitution to survive and endure corruption.\nThis is the film\u2019s first release outside of Japan and it comes with a film\nhistorian introduction, a movie expert commentary, an interview with a Toei\ntattoo artist, promo materials, a booklet and original and newly commissioned\nbox art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Sword and the Claw<\/em> (1975) aka Kili\u00e7 Aslan<\/em>is a wild and over-the-top action picture from Turkey that AGFA released on\nBlu-ray many years ago. After a boy is orphaned by a nasty king, is raised by\nlions, and returns to take revenge as an adult while brandishing metallic claw\ngloves. The original disc release went out-of-print, but is now being reissued\nfor those who missed it the first time around. This edition includes all the\nsame features, plus the bonus South Korean martial arts title The Brawl\nBusters<\/em> (1978).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cinematograph is presenting the Oscar-nominated sports drama\nBang the Drum Slowly<\/em> (1973) in a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray combo pack. It stars Michael Moriarty and Robert De Niro as two\nbaseball players whose relationship changes when one contracts a terminal\nillness. The 4K picture restoration was taken from the original camera negative\nand the set includes a director commentary, a film historian commentary, a\nvideo interview with the filmmaker and a video essay on the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor is also putting out a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d\nBlu-ray of Child\u2019s Play<\/em> (1972), which is a well-regarded suspense\npicture from Sydney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Fail Safe, Serpico, Dog Day\nAfternoon, Network<\/em>). Set at an all-boys school, an old student arrives on\ncampus as a new teacher and gets in the middle of a feud between two of his old\ninstructors, eventually discovering horrible things have been occurring there\nfor years. It stars Beau Bridges, Robert Preston and James Mason. The disc\nboasts a 2K image restoration from the original camera negative, a film\nhistorian commentary, a documentary short on Lumet, another documentary\nchronicling the first half of the filmmaker\u2019s career, a 42-minute interview with\nLumet and Charlie Rose, and a discussion with the production designer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Criterion is making Killer of Sheep<\/em> (1978) available\nas a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo (a standalone Blu-ray is also available).\nThis is an independent feature from writer\/director Charles Burnett (To\nSleep with Anger, The Annihilation of Fish<\/em>) set in Los Angeles about the\neveryday struggles of a Watts-area slaughterhouse worker. The 4K restoration of\nthe film was approved by the director, and the disc comes with a Burnett\ncommentary, new interviews with the moviemaker and star Henry Gayle Sanders.\nYou\u2019ll also get an appreciation of the movie by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight)<\/em>,\ntwo short films by Burnett, a 2019 documentary on Burnett, a 2007 cast reunion\nand a trailer. There is also an essay on the title included in the set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If adventure movies are to your liking, you can now pick up The\nThree Musketeers<\/em> (1973) and The Four Musketeers<\/em> (1974) in a 4K Ultra\nHD and Blu-ray set or as a Blu-ray only release. This is a two-part adaptation\nof the famous Alexandre Dumas story from Richard Lester (A Hard Day\u2019s Night,\nHelp!, Juggernaut, Superman II, Superman III<\/em>). It boasts a star-studded\ncast that includes Michael York, Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay, Richard\nChamberlain, Raquel Welch, Faye Dunaway, Geraldine Chaplin, and Charlton\nHeston. The press notes that the features have been given 4K restorations and\nthat the release arrives with a documentary on the films, a 2002 two-part\ndocumentary featuring interviews with cast and crew, a making of The Three\nMusketeers\u201d with behind-the-scenes footage and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cult Epics is making the European drama One People<\/em>\n(1976) aka Wan Pipel<\/em> available for purchase on Blu-ray. It follows a\nSurinam studying in Amsterdam who runs afoul of his conservative community back\nhome. For its Blu-ray debut, you will get a 2K image restoration, a film\nhistorian commentary, a 2020 introduction to the movie from the director, a\n1976 making-of, a recent interview with the female lead, a bonus short, a photo\ngallery, trailers, a double-sided sleeve with original poster art and new art\nfor the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What We Left Unfinished<\/em> (2019) is an interesting\ndocumentary receiving a Blu-ray release from Dekanalog. It tells the story of\nfive unfinished narrative features made in Afghanistan between 1978 and 1991\nthat were shut down by the government after the completion of principal photography.\nViewers learn of the dangers the moviemakers experienced trying to complete and\nrelease their work. This disc includes a director introduction, an extended\ntalk with one of the subjects, a Q&A with the filmmaker, a discussion with\nthe composer, a short film, and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lupin the 3rd<\/sup>: The Live-Action Movie<\/em>\n(2014) is exactly that, a live-action adaptation of the famous Japanese manga\nseries. Discotek Media is presenting the Blu-ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re curious about the new release Being Maria<\/em>, you can also pick-up the actual \u00a0Last Tango in Paris<\/em> (1972) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray \u201cStandard Edition\u201d combo pack from Disturbpix. It stars Malon Brando and Maria Schneider and details a passionate affair between two strangers. The set promises a 4K Ultra HD restoration in Dolby Vision, an interview with the editor, an archival interview with director Bernardo Bertolucci (The Conformist, The Last Emperor<\/em>), two interviews with collaborators of the filmmaker, and a featurette on the film\u2019s locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Terror in the Fog: Wallace Krimi at CCC<\/em> is a Blu-ray\nset containing West German crime films adapted from British writer Edgar\nWallace. Specifically, titles in this release include The Curse of the\nYellow Snake<\/em> (1963), The Strangler at Blackmoor Castle<\/em> (1963), The\nMad Executioners<\/em> (1963), The Phantom of Soho<\/em> (1964), The Monster\nof London City<\/em> (1964) and The Racetrack Murders<\/em> (1964). With the\nexception of The Phantom of Soho<\/em> (which is in standard definition), all\nfilms have been given 2K restorations. A 60-page book on the films,\nintroductions to the films, movie historian commentaries, a visual essay on\nthese title\u2019s influence on genre pictures, and other interviews are all listed\nas bonus features on the release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The documentary Louder Than You Think<\/em> (2023) is\narriving on Blu-ray from Factory 25. It details the career of Pavement drummer\nGary Young and comes with deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette and a\n32-page booklet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Artie Shaw: Time is All You\u2019ve Got<\/em> (1985) is a\ndocumentary arriving on Blu-ray from Film Movement. It tells the story of the\ntitle figure, a famous bandleader and clarinetist from the 1930s and 1940s. The\nfilm has been restored in 4K for this release and comes with a director\ncommentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor is also putting out the German period drama The\nMarquise of O<\/em> (1976) on Blu-ray. The film stars Bruno Ganz and the disc\nincludes essays on the film by critics, and archival interviews with the lead\nactor, as well as the film\u2019s director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Playground<\/em> (2021) is an award-winning Belgian drama\nabout a girl who witnesses her brother being bullied at school and ends up\nstruggling with how to proceed when her sibling begs her not to get involved.\nThe picture was shortlisted for Best International Film at the Academy Awards\n(it didn\u2019t end up receiving a nomination). This Blu-ray contains a bonus short\nand an essay on the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Icarus Films is presenting a double-feature Blu-ray\ncontaining The Human Pyramid<\/em> (1961) and The Punishment<\/em> (1962).\nThese two French features are cinema v\u00e9rit\u00e9 documentaries about youngsters\ntrying to find their place in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The French\/American co-production Love Crime<\/em> (2010) is appearing on Blu-ray from IFC Films. This effort stars Ludivine Sagnier and Kristin Scott Thomas and follows an increasingly unusual and antagonistic relationship between an executive and her prot\u00e9g\u00e9. The disc features a film critic commentary track, an essay on the feature, and a booklet with more writing on the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s another busy week for Kino-Lorber. One option is the\nBlu-ray box set Audie Murphy Collection IV<\/em> which contains The Kid\nfrom Texas <\/em>(195), The Cimarron Kid<\/em> (1952) and Drums Across the\nRiver<\/em> (1954). These three westerns contain movie expert commentary tracks\nand trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019ll Sleep When I\u2019m Dead<\/em> (2003) is a revenge film\nfrom Mike Hodges (Get Carter, The Terminal Man, Flash Gordon, Black Rainbow,\nCroupier<\/em>) about an ex-gangster investigating the death of his brother. The\ncast includes Clive Owen, Malcolm McDowell and Charlotte Rampling. It\u2019s\narriving on Blu-ray with a new 4K master from the original camera negative, a\ndirector commentary, deleted scenes with optional director commentary, a\nfeaturette with Hodges and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If you appreciate comedies from the Farrelly Brothers (There\u2019s\nSomething About Mary, Dumb and Dumber<\/em>), Kingpin<\/em> (1996) is an\noutrageous feature from the pair that is now arriving in a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray combo pack. The plot deals with an Amish bowler and his one-armed\nmanager trying to win a professional championship. It stars Woody Harrelson,\nRandy Quaid, Billy Murray, Vanessa Angel and Chris Elliott. Specs on the disc\ninclude a 4K restoration of the theatrical cut from the original negative, a 4K\nrestoration of the extended cut, a film historian commentary, a Farrelly\nBrothers commentary on the extended version, a featurette on the movie and a\ntrailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins<\/em> (1971) is a British\nsatire arriving from Kino on Blu-ray. This disc includes an interview with a\ncast member, a discussion with the cinematographer, and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here\u2019s a real blast from the past. The adventure comedy Nate and Hayes<\/em> (1983) aka Savage Island <\/em>is debuting this week on Blu-ray. If you grew up in the early 1980s, this Paramount Pictures release was a box office flop, but ended up being something of a VHS staple. It seemed like everybody rented it regularly, my family included, 1984. Then, it appeared to once again fall into obscurity. I know that I watched it a number of times, but haven\u2019t seen it since and can\u2019t remember how effective it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Set in the South Pacific (and produced in New Zealand), the\nmovie follows a pirate and a missionary pursuing the same woman. They\neventually join forces to free her from a kidnapper. The film starred Tommy Lee\nJones, Michael O\u2019Keefe and Jenny Seagrove. It was also co-written by John\nHughes (The Breakfast Club, Home Alone, Uncle Buck<\/em>). A new HD master of\nthe title has been taken from a 4K scan of the original camera negative and the\ndisc features two film historian commentaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The sequel Wayne\u2019s World 2<\/em> (1993) is also arriving in\na 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo pack. In this follow-up to the 1992 comedy\nsmash, Wayne and Garth try to organize a rock festival. The movie has been\ngiven a 4K restoration from the original camera negative and is presented in\nDolby Vision. It comes with a director commentary, a featurette on the\nproduction, TV spots and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A director\u2019s cut of the independent film A Better Place<\/em>\n(1997) is being released on Blu-ray from MVD Visual. Kevin Smith served as an\nexecutive producer on this title about a teenage outcast turning violent. The\ndisc presents a 2K Restoration of a 3K scan of the OCN & first generation\nprint elements, presented in its director-intended 1.50:1 aspect ratio. It\ncomes with an intro from the writer\/director, an archival commentary with the\nfilmmaker and cast, a 2001 version of the film in standard definition, an old\nintro from Smith, a \u201cgoof\u201d commentary, deleted scenes, outtakes and bloopers,\nand a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Bone Sickness<\/em> (2004) is a shot-on-video independent\nzombie movie that is appearing on Blu-ray from Saturn\u2019s Core Audio & Video.\nIt comes with new and archival commentaries, a different cut of the film, new\nand old featurettes on the production, behind-the-scenes footage, interviews\nwith the filmmaker, outtakes and much, much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Severin always puts out quality products packed to the gills\nwith bonuses and this week is no exception. Entertaining Mr. Sloane<\/em>\n(1970) is a dark comedy about a disturbing love triangle and murder in a\nBritish home. The film has been scanned in 2K from the original camera negative\nand comes with more than four hours of new and archival special features. This\nincludes a film historian commentary, archival interview and much, much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hell of the Living Dead<\/em> (1980) is a nutty Italian\nzombie picture from Bruno Mattei (Rats: Night of Terror<\/em>, Cruel Jaws<\/em>)\nand Claudio Fragasso (Troll 2<\/em>) about a chemical leak that unleashes\nhordes of zombies in New Guinea. It\u2019s not a good movie, but will deliver a few\nlaughs for horror fans in the right frame of mind. The film can be purchased\neither on 4K Ultra HD or separately on Blu-ray. Besides a 4K restoration of the\nmovie from the original camera negative, it comes with a ton of cast and crew\ninterviews, as well as a tour of locations used in the movie, an \ninterview with a soundtrack contributor, and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n House of Psychotic Women Rarities Collection Volume 2<\/em>\nis a Blu-ray set containing international genre films featuring, as expected,\nmaniacal female killers. You\u2019ll get The Savage Eye<\/em> (1960), The Glass\nCeiling<\/em> (1971), Morgiana<\/em> (1972) and Butterfly Kiss<\/em> (1995).\nAll the titles have been given either 2K or 4K restorations from the original\ncamera negatives and the set boasts more than 11 hours of extras, including\nintros, cast and crew interviews, video essays and publicity materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The French chiller In My Skin<\/em> (2002) is being\nreleased in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo pack and as a standalone Blu-ray.\nThis one is a particularly graphic effort involving a woman who suffers a\ndisfiguring accident and gets into a sadistic\/masochistic relationship with her\nnew partner. The 4K master from the original camera negative presents the film\nclearer than ever before. It comes with a filmmaker commentary, a movie critic\ncommentary, a podcast about the feature, trailers, featurettes and shorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re looking for more Italian horror, Rats: Night of\nTerror<\/em> (1984) can now be purchased as a 4K Ultra HD \u201cStandard Edition\u201d or\nas a Blu-ray. This effort from Bruno Mattei (co-directed by an uncredited\nClaudio Fragasso) is set after an apocalypse and involves survivors fighting\nhordes of hungry rats. It\u2019s most famous for its memorably ridiculous close. The\nfilm has been scanned in 4K from the original camera negative for the first\ntime ever. It also comes with a making-of documentary featuring interviews with\nthe cast and crew. And you\u2019ll get individual discussions with cast and crew\nmembers, a retrospective making-of, a trailer, and a music video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hooah! Al Pacino fans can now pick up a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray edition of Scent of a Woman<\/em> (1992) from Shout Factory. Pacino\nwon an Academy Award playing a blind, retired Army Lt. Col man who teaches a\nprep school student how to live his life over a Thanksgiving holiday. This\n\u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d contains a 4K restoration of the film from the original\ncamera negative approved by director Martin Brest (Beverly Hills Cop,\nMidnight Run<\/em>). Brest also appears in a new retrospective interview.\nAdditionally, there is a recently recorded conversation with the film\u2019s\nco-editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A 4K Ultra-HD and Blu-ray combo pack of Sky Captain and\nthe World of Tomorrow<\/em> (2004) is also available for purchase. Set in the\n1930s, this is a science-fiction action\/adventure picture about a reporter\ntrying to stop a plot to destroy the world. It is noted for being shot almost\nentirely on a soundstage with CGI backdrops added in. The picture stars Gweneth\nPaltrow, Jude Law, Giovanni Ribisi and Angelina Jolie. I don\u2019t remember the\nmovie working particularly well, but it has developed a cult following and is\nnow arriving on disc with all kinds of bells and whistles. Perhaps I need to\ngive it another shot. Those who pick it up will find a 4K transfer of the\noriginal camera negative, as well as an audio commentary with the director and\ncrew, a producer commentary, making-of featurettes, the original six-minute\nshort, deleted scenes, a gag reel, trailers and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shudder is rereleasing a couple of titles from their\nstreaming service available on Blu-ray. The first is the zombie film Blood\nQuantum<\/em> (2019), which arrives with a new film historian commentary, short\nand promo material. The second is for a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d Blu-ray of the South\nAfrican psychological chiller, Good Madam<\/em> (2021). It comes with a\nfilmmaker commentary, cast and crew interviews, a trailer and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sony Pictures is giving the Oscar-nominated science-fiction\ndrama Starman<\/em> (1984) a standalone 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook\nrelease (it was previously available as part of the Columbia Classics <\/em>box\nset). Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen star in this story of an alien who takes on\nthe appearance of a widower\u2019s husband. She attempts to help him avoid capture\nand find his way home. Apparently, the image quality is vastly improved from\nprevious editions and it comes with loads of extras that can be found on the\naccompanying Blu-ray. You\u2019ll receive a commentary with star Bridges and\ndirector John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China<\/em>),\nmore than 20 deleted scenes, cast and crew retrospective interviews,\nbehind-the-scenes time lapses, a making-of featurette, a music video, a stills\ngallery and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This has been a big week for Vinegar Syndrome. If you\nhaven\u2019t been to their website for their Halfway to Black Friday Sale<\/em>,\nyou should check it out, as they announced 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combos of\nsome big titles with tons of bonus features. These are currently exclusives\nthat can only be found on their official site. You can now order The Dark\nHalf<\/em> (1993), Dirty Work<\/em> (1998), The Golden Child<\/em> (1986), Jade<\/em>\n(1995) and Let\u2019s Scare Jessica to Death<\/em> (1971) through the retailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, the slasher Murderock<\/em> (1984) from Lucio\nFulci (Zombie, The Beyond<\/em>) is available from Vinegar Syndrome in a 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray set at most retailers. This effort involves a killer\ntargeting young students at a dance academy. The movie has been newly restored\nand scanned in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative and is presented in\nDolby Vision. A film historian commentary is included, as well as a ton of cast\nand crew interviews, an audio discussion with Fulci, a video trailer, a 40-page\nbook with essays on the title, and reversible sleeve artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Nesting<\/em> (1981) is also available as a 4K Ultra HD\nand Blu-ray combo. It follows a New York-based writer who rents an isolated\ncountry mansion in order to work on her latest book project. Unfortunately, she\nbegins seeing disturbing apparitions that may hold clues to solving a tragedy\nthat occurred decades earlier. The 4K scan is from the original camera negative\nand is presented in Dolby Vision. A film expert commentary is included, along\nwith cast and crew interviews, an audio talk with the co-writer, a featurette\nincluding outtakes, promotional material, an alternate jump scare, cuts and\ntrims, as well as unused dallies, and reversible sleeve artwork on the\npackaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, Warner Archive is making Blu-rays available of the\nMorgan Freeman film Lean on Me<\/em> (1989), as well as Mystery Street<\/em>\n(1950), Rhapsody in Blue<\/em> (1945), Three Comrades<\/em> (1938) and the\nOscar-winning Marion Cotillard film La Vie en Rose<\/em> (2007).
