The movie\ndelivered a sense of wonder and excitement as it introduced viewers to\ndinosaurs, and presented memorable thrills as the beasts got loose and showed\ntheir power over humanity. The two sequels that followed weren\u2019t as effective,\nbut did have individual moments of greatness. For this reviewer, the 2015\nfollow-up <em>Jurassic World<\/em> was another winner, delivering the same kind of\ngrand scope and thrills as the original, while adding in some fun new elements.\nSubsequent sequels have lagged significantly, with the previous chapter\nsuggesting that the series might have run its course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jurassic World Rebirth<\/em> is just what the title\nsuggests, an attempt to revitalize the franchise. The movie boasts a talented\ncast and crew, including the screenwriter of the original film. But while the\npromise of exciting new dinosaurs and fresh characters might have sounded like\na good idea, the filmmakers would have been wiser to have listened to the\nadvice of one character in their own film and avoided this kind of experiment.\nThe final product is strangely flat and less-than-enthralling.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Jurassic-World-Rebirth-04-fixed-1024x670.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31581\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the events of the previous films, dinosaurs have begun\nto die out due to unlivable conditions in the modern world. Most remaining\ncreatures now live hidden in regions along the Equator. Martin Krebs (Rupert\nFriend) is a pharmaceutical CEO desperate to locate some of these dinosaurs.\nSpecifically, he wants blood and tissue samples from living specimens to\ndevelop a new medication. Krebs hires merc Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson)\nand paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) to travel to an abandoned\nisland where secret InGen research was once conducted. Scientists on site were\nattempting to splice different dinosaur species and create new lifeforms for\ndisplay before it all went horribly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Jurassic-World-Rebirth-06-fixed-1024x629.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31583\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite being told that no one in their right mind goes near\nthis isolated peninsula, the protagonists agree to the proposal and also employ\nDuncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) and his team to sail them to the island and\nassist them. While on their way to collect samples, they encounter a family in\ndistress boating near the island. Those on the craft include Reuben Delgado\n(Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), his eldest daughter Teresa (Luna Blaise) and her\nboyfriend Xavier Dobbs (David Iacono), as well as his youngest child, Isabella\n(Audrina Miranda).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What works best in the film are a few scenes involving the\nhumans trying to retain samples and escape the wrath of the enormous creatures.\nThe first third of the picture is set primarily on boats. When the characters\ncome into contact with one of the large aquatic hybrid dinosaurs, the visuals\nare impressive. Additionally, there is an entertaining scene involving a\nTyrannosaurus Rex pursuing the Delgado family in a river raft (which has been\nloosely adapted from a chapter in the original <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> novel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Jurassic-World-Rebirth-01-fixed-1024x489.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31582\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while some of these bits and a few humorous comments\nrelating to the frightening events work, in its finished form the script has\ntoo many shortcomings. For one, the characters aren\u2019t particularly well-drawn.\nThe film strains to get viewers to relate to Zora and Duncan, eventually having\nthem trade blunt stories about their personal losses (while an over-the-top\nscore booms in the background). Paleontologist Loomis also spends too much time\nattempting to convince the protagonist that there may be more important things\nin life than a huge payday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the film largely separates the Delgado family\nfrom the main crew, to the point where they feel like they\u2019re in a separate\nmovie. Viewers will wonder why the father put his family in such dire straits\nin the first place by sailing in the general vicinity of the island. It makes\nall of the characters in this story difficult to truly engage with. The\nsupporting characters come across as little more than dinosaur chow, and even\nthe villainous Krebs is so one-note he may as well have been given a moustache\nto twirl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Jurassic-World-Rebirth-05-fixed-1024x655.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31584\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the dinosaurs, they are given the monster-movie\ntreatment (with a PG-13 treatment). The face of the film\u2019s main reptile bears a\nresemblance to the title character in <em>Alien<\/em>, and other scenes remind one\nof the first <em>Avatar<\/em> sequel. A cute pet dinosaur is strangely wedged into\nthe mix, but not used to its full potential. And the final moments, which see\nsurviving characters on a boat sharing smiles, feels inauthentic (especially\nconsidering they were all attacked by ocean-dwelling dinos just one day earlier).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there are some interesting individual moments, this is\nan odd follow-up that\u2019ll leave many scratching their heads. The characters\naren\u2019t engagingly written and a lot of aspects feel patched together, lacking\ncohesion. And it\u2019s strange to see a legendary and, at one time, unique\nfranchise start lifting from other film series and itself. <em>Jurassic World\nRebirth<\/em> may be a modest improvement over the previous entry, but it does\nlittle to reinvigorate this flagging franchise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Running Time: 133 minutes This feature from Universal Pictures opens exclusively at theaters on July 2nd.
