Welcome to another look at highlights arriving on 4K Ultra\nHD, Blu-ray and DVD. This is an interesting week, with one notable studio\ntitle, a number of interesting independents, and a ton of older films receiving\nhigh-definition upgrades. So, if you can\u2019t make it out to the movies this week,\nbe sure to give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

AFFINITY \u2013 This independent action film was shot in Thailand\nand tells the story of an ex-Navy SEAL taking time off after suffering the\neffects of PTSD. He ends up in Bangkok, where he meets a mysterious woman and\nembarks on a relationship. When she is suddenly kidnapped, he goes out to find\nher, enlisting old friends and fighting his way past various baddies (it\nprobably doesn\u2019t do much for his condition as the bodies pile up). Right now,\nthere are only a handful of reviews available for the title from online\naction-movie critics. They have been mostly positive with a few caveats. \nMost suggest that the cinematography and fight sequences are excellent. But\nthey also admit that there are some issues with the story, including a sci-fi\nelement that seems very out of place. It stars Marko Zaror, Louis Mandylor,\nBrooke Ence and Brahim Chab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE EMU WAR \u2013 Way back in 1932, there was a military\noperation to cull the emu population in Australia. It was not effective, with\nsoldiers finding the zippy, flightless birds easily able to evade gunfire. The\npopulation did eventually drop, but it wasn\u2019t as easy an operation as hoped\nfor. This comedy from Down Under takes the form of an actual war movie, with a\ngroup of cadets being sent to the front lines to face off against armed avian\nfoes. Expect plenty of over-the-top moments, exploding birds\u2026 and humans. The\nmovie was released in its homeland in 2023 and hasn\u2019t been seen by many outside\nits homeland. Of the few reviews that have appeared, reaction is all over the\nplace. Some called the feature tasteless and unfunny in the extreme. Slightly\nmore found it so memorably outrageous that they couldn\u2019t help but be amused.\nThe cast includes Damian Callinan, Lisa Fineberg, Aaron Gocs and Naomi Higgins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE GULLSPANG MIRACLE \u2013 Here\u2019s another international title\nfor your consideration. This documentary is a Scandinavian co-production and\ntells the story of two deeply religious, Norwegian sisters who decide to buy an\napartment in Sweden. When they meet the owner and seller, they are shocked to\ndiscover that the individual looks identical to their sister, who committed\nsuicide decades earlier. The person also goes by their sibling\u2019s nickname.\nInitially, the pair consider what occurred as a sign from above, but shocking\nrevelations may change a few minds. The press was very upbeat about this\nfeature. One or two didn\u2019t like the way the story was told, calling the film\nconfusing and hard to follow. Everyone else wrote that this was a fascinating\nand compellingly told true story. They believed that the numerous twists and\nturns were remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

JUST THE TWO OF US \u2013 A woman believes that she may have met\nthe perfect partner. She commits completely to a life together, only to find\nhis possessiveness causing issues. After a few episodes, the lead realizes that\nshe is in a toxic relationship and that he may actually be dangerous. She must\nthen attempt to escape his clutches without meeting a tragic end. This French\neffort received decent notices from reviewers. Nearly one-third did call the\nfilm routine, featuring one-note characters. They also stated that most\nreviewers would be able to predict the story\u2019s turns immediately from the\noutset. However, the majority said that the performances were strong and that\nthe filmmaker\u2019s did an excellent job of depicting the horror, trauma and fear\nthat the lead character feels. Virginie Efira, Melvil Poupaud, Dominique\nReymond, and Virginie Ledoyen headline the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE LIFE OF CHUCK \u2013 The latest adaptation of a Stephen King\nwork is this unusual tale with drama and fantasy elements. It includes three\ninterconnected segments that involve an ordinary man named Chuck. One details a\nworld in chaos, the second tells a story of a street musician who has an\nencounter with a businessman, while the third involves an orphaned child living\nwith his grandparents. The film won awards at various film festivals and\ncritics responded well to it. A small number weren\u2019t left moved by the story,\ncomplaining that it became corny, overly sentimental, with a confusing final\nmessage. But the vast majority were charmed by the title character. They found\nthe story unique, beautifully acted and filled with thought-provoking ideas.\nThe film can be purchased in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray pack or as a standalone\nBlu-ray. It stars Tom Hiddleston, Jacob Tremblay, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen\nGillan, Mark Hamill and Mia Sara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

MISERICORDIA \u2013 After his boss passes away, an employee who\nwas friends with the figure agrees to attend the funeral. He stays with the\nwidow and gets into the middle of a strange situation. It seems that there has\nbeen a disappearance in the area, a neighbor has been threatening the\nhousehold, and another acquaintance has arrived with a strange request. The\nprotagonist tries to navigate all of these strange events and figure out the\nmystery of what her old boss was up to. This French-language European\nco-production made a very good impression on reviewers. A small number thought\nthat the film went on a few too many tangents that went nowhere, and ultimately\nfrustrated them. However, all others were taken in by all the unusual and\noccasionally humorous subplots, calling the movie clever and suggesting it made\nthe viewer feel discomfort as they thought hard about the characters and their\nreal intentions.  The movie stars F\u00e9lix Kysyl, Catherine Frot and\nJean-Baptiste Durand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

RAGING GRACE \u2013 This British production involves an immigrant\nfrom the Philippines who moves to London with her young daughter to try and\nmake a new start. The undocumented woman finds a position caring for a dying\nold man. The elderly figure begins conversing with the employee and her child,\ntelling them about his familiarity with their home country. But as they learn\nmore about the old man, dark and distributing events then occur that put the\nprotagonists in grave danger. This picture did well on the festival circuit in\n2023, but took a bit of time to find a North American distributor. Despite the\ndelay, the press spoke highly of the film. A few complained that it was too\nblunt in its messaging and didn\u2019t deliver enough scares to recommend. Everyone\nelse thought the film was well-acted, atmospheric and eerie, with\nwell-delivered commentary on the treatment of immigrants. It features Max\nEigenmann, Leanne Best and David Hayman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

SORRY, BABY \u2013 A solitary literature professor in New England\nreunites with old acquaintances and is reminded of a horrible event during her\ntime as a graduate student. After working closely with a professor whose work\nshe admires, she is sexually assaulted by the instructor. The story follows her\nin the following months, and how she copes with the attack. This includes\ntaking in a stray kitten. The independent feature had a strong run at festivals\nand received great write-ups. One or two didn\u2019t think the movie was open enough\nabout the lead\u2019s struggles and didn\u2019t think the use of humor at certain points\nwas effective. All others called the movie a thoughtful dramatization of the\nexperiences of a traumatized woman. They believed that the use of humor was effective\nand made the story all the more authentic and engrossing. The cast includes Eva\nVictor, Naomi Ackie, Lucas Hedges, Louis Cancelmi and Kelly McCormack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

WE MIGHT AS WELL BE DEAD \u2013 This German production is another\neffort that was released a couple of years ago in Europe, but is only now\narriving on disc in North America. The story is set in a secluded apartment\nblock located on the edge of a forest. This tight-knit community lives a safe\nand sheltered existence, but don\u2019t stray from the property. New tenants are\nrarely accepted and one gets the impression things are bad in the outside\nworld. When the janitor\u2019s dog disappears, grudges and conflicts arise, tempers\nflare, and the residents begin turning on each other. Most members of the press\nwho saw this feature appreciated it. One or two voices thought the story\ndragged and that the filmmakers didn\u2019t generate enough tension between the\ncharacters. Still, the majority were gripped by the story, stating that it was\na beautifully shot dark comedy that clearly and efficiently shows how quickly\ncivilization can fall apart and descend into chaos. Ioana Iacob, Pola Geiger\nand Jjorg Schuttauf headline the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a remarkably busy time for older features. Arrow Video\nis presenting a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD of Creepshow 2<\/em> (1987) (no\nBlu-ray is included). This anthology chiller, inspired by EC comic books,\nfeatures three tales of terror involving all sorts of nastiness like a\nmurderous statue, a blob in a lake and a vengeful zombie hitchhiker. It isn\u2019t\nnearly as good as the 1982 original, but does have its moments. The 35mm\noriginal film negative has been newly scanned, restored and presented in Dolby\nVision for this release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extras include a commentary with director Michael Gornick, an archival interview with screenwriter Geoge A. Romero, a talk with makeup effects and actor Tom Savini, as well as several other discussions with cast and crew. You\u2019ll also see a behind-the-scenes featurette on the makeup work, an image gallery, trailers and TV spots, and a couple of drafts of the screenplay. The movie comes in a slipbox with an insert booklet. There is also a comic adaptation of a segment called Pinfall<\/em> that was never filmed \u2013 it involves bowlers who are killed and end up coming back as zombies to take revenge on those responsible in a manner appropriate to their hobby. The story is legendary and one of those that writer Romero always wanted to shoot, but never managed to. Read a full review of the disc right here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Good, the Bad, the Weird<\/em> (2008) is also arriving\nas a 4K Ultra HD \u201cLimited Edition\u201d. This cult western from South Korea involves\ntwo outlaws looking for treasure while evading the Japanese army and Chinese\nbandits.  Both the international and Korean versions of the picture are\nincluded and come from a 4K master presented in Dolby Vision and approved by\nthe director. There is an introduction to the picture with the director, a film\nhistorian commentary, and two archival commentaries on each cut from the\nfilmmaker (one track also features the cast, and the cinematographer joins in\non the second). You\u2019ll also get archival features like an interview with the\ndirector, and the martial arts coordinator, as well as publicity materials. It\ncomes with a book featuring writing on the movie, three postcard artcards, and\na double-sided fold-out poster with original and newly created art for the\nfeature (which also appears on the reversible sleeve).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raw Meat<\/em> (1972) aka Death Line<\/em> is a British\/American horror film with Donald Pleasance and Scotland Yard hunting down cannibals hiding deep in abandoned areas of the London subway system. It\u2019s a gritty, atmospheric and effective effect effort that has a few shocks and was the first film from director Gary Sherman (Dead & Buried, Vice Squad, Poltergeist III<\/em>). Blue Underground is delivering the film as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo (it can also be purchased as on Blu-ray only). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The release contains a commentary with director Sherman, producer Paul Maslansky and the assistant director. Additionally, there is a new film historian commentary, an interview with Sherman and the executive producers Paul, discussions with cast members, and a ton of publicity materials. Drug-O-Rama Video Party<\/em> from AGFA is a Blu-ray set\ncontaining the grindhouse features Help Wanted Female<\/em> (1968), Hedonistic\nPleasures<\/em> (1969), Alice in Acidland<\/em> (1969) and The Hard Road<\/em>\n(1970). All of these hard-to-find drive-in exploitation titles are preserved\nfrom the original 1990s V-VHS masters. It comes with trailers and drive-in\nsnipes, a promotional gallery, a \u201cslumber party\u201d mode and a booklet with\nwriting on the titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Canadian International Pictures Blu-ray release of the\nearly LGBTQ-themed Canadian drama Winter Kept Us Warm<\/em> (1965) was a\nVinegar Syndrome exclusive. It is now available from most retailers and\nfeatures too many bonuses to list here. You\u2019ll get audio commentaries, cast and\ncrew interviews, deleted scenes, short films, promo materials and\nmore.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

 You can now pick up a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD\nand Blu-ray combo of Breathless<\/em> (1983) everywhere from Cinematographe.\nThis is a remake of the 1960 French Jean-Luc Godard feature. In this effort,\nRichard Gere takes the lead role as a criminal whose past begins to catch up\nwith him. This version contains the same 4K restoration from the original\ncamera negative and extras as the previously released set and promises a\ndirector commentary, a film expert commentary, new interviews with the\ndirector, and casting director, as well as a video essay, deleted scenes and\nalternate ending and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swimming to Cambodia<\/em> (1987) is also getting a\n\u201cStandard Edition\u201d Blu-ray from the distributor that will be widely available.\nIt\u2019s a recording of Spalding Gray recounting his experiences in Cambodia on the\nset of The Killing Fields<\/em>, and how it changed him. This release also\ncontains a film critic commentary, an interview with the director of The\nKilling Fields, new interviews with the producers, an archival video with\ndirector Jonathan Demme and two podcast episodes with Demme discussing the film\nand the late Gray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Criterion is delivering one of their most notable box-sets\never. The Wes Anderson Archive: Ten Films, Twenty-Five Years<\/em> contains 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-rays of Bottle Rocket<\/em> (1996)), Rushmore<\/em> (1998), The\nRoyal Tenenbaums<\/em> (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou<\/em> (2004), The\nDarjeeling Limited<\/em> (2007), Fantastic Mr. Fox<\/em> (2009), Moonrise\nKingdom<\/em> (2012), The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/em> (2014), Isle of Dogs<\/em>\n(2018) and The French Dispatch<\/em> (2021). Several of these films are\nmasterpieces and all are worth a watch (at least if you ask me). All of the\nmovies are presented with new 4K masters in Dolby Vision, and come with over\n25-hours of extras including audio commentaries, interviews, deleted scenes,\npromo materials, and just about anything else you could possibly want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who are happy with previously released 4K versions\nof Anderson\u2019s films, the last two movies in the package, Isle of Dogs<\/em>\n(2018) and The French Dispatch<\/em> (2021), are being released on their own\nas 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combos and standalone Blu-rays. Those two currently\naren\u2019t available as 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray sets, so that issue has been\nrectified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 Dead on the Crimson Canvas<\/em> (1996) is an\nultra-low-budget, shot on Super-8, made-in-New-York homage to films of Dario\nArgento and Mario Bava. Degausser Video is delivering the flick on Blu-ray,\nnewly transferred and restored from the best surviving tape master. It comes\nwith a filmmaker commentary, a 41-minute documentary on the production, an\ninterview with a cast member, a video essay, and promo materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drama Redlands<\/em> (2014), set in the title\nCalifornia town, is arriving on Blu-ray from Dekanalog. It comes with a deleted\nscene, an extended scene, additional shorts by the moviemaker, a trailer and a\nbooklet with writing on the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re a fan of 1980s horror, then you\u2019ll be very\nfamiliar with the great 1985 vampire horror\/comedy Fright Night<\/em>. You\u2019re\nSo Cool, Brewster! The Story of Fright Night<\/em> (2016) is a documentary about\nthe movie that is arriving on Blu-ray from ETR Media. It goes into great detail\non the enduring film, as well as its 1988 sequel that includes\nbehind-the-scenes stories and new footage from the original\u2019s director.\nNaturally, the disc also comes with loads of extra interviews and other frills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Film Movement is presenting the award-winning South Korean documentary My Love, Don\u2019t Cross That River<\/em> (2014) on Blu-ray about an aging couple dealing with mortality. Deleted scenes and a booklet with writing on the picture is also included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Danish\/Swedish period coming-of-age drama Pelle the\nConqueror<\/em> (1987) won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film back\nin the day and is now arriving on Blu-ray. It arrives with a film scholar\ncommentary track and a booklet with writing on the movie.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young & Beautiful<\/em> (2013) is a French drama and\nCannes Palme d\u2019Or nominee about a call girl that is appearing on Blu-ray from\nIFC Films. This disc contains commentary from a film authority, archival cast\nand crew interviews, deleted scenes, footage from the movie\u2019s Cannes premiere,\nand a booklet with an essay on the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Philippines effort Bona<\/em> (1980) is about a female,\nobsessive movie fan who begins stalking her favorite performer, an actor known\nfor bit parts. Kari is presenting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo of the title.\nThe movie is presented in Dolby Vision and the set contains cast and crew\ninterviews, as well as a bonus short film and trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\\<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Japanese effort Freeze Me<\/em> (2000) is arriving on\nBlu-ray from Kano. It\u2019s considered one of the more shocking exploitation titles\nof its day. The film has been newly restored in 2K and includes an interview\nwith the cinematographer and a booklet with writing on the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino is delivering some major releases this week, at least,\nif you like disaster movies. They are presenting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray of Airport<\/em>\n(1970), Airport 1975<\/em> (1974), Airport \u201877<\/em> (1977) and The\nConcorde\u2026 Airport \u201979<\/em> (1979), all of which feature planes in peril. Blu-ray\nonly versions of these films are also available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original Airport<\/em> featured Dean Martin, George\nKennedy, Burt Lancaster and more on a commercial flight troubled by a snowstorm\nand a mad bomber. Truthfully, it also seemed a bit pokey and melodramatic to\nme, but it was a massive hit in its day, jumpstarting the 1970s disaster movie\ncraze. This edition includes a 4K scan of the 35mm interpositive presented in\nDolby Vision. It comes with a film historian commentary and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you ask me, Airport 1975<\/em> is a lot more fun.\nCharlton Heston, Karen Black, Helen Reddy (as a singing nun), Susan Clark,\nLinda Blair, Sid Ceasar, a returning George Kennedy and many more star in this\nstory, about a 747 that gets into a mid-air collision. Its passengers must find\na way to land safely. For this title, a 4K scan of the original 35mm camera\nnegative was created and is presented in Dolby Vision. Extras include a film\nhistorian commentary, and trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also have a soft-spot for Airport \u201877<\/em>, in which a\nluxury passenger plane crashes into the Atlantic and sits on a precipice under\nthe sea in the Bermuda Triangle. The survivors try to keep the water from\nleaking in while rescue crews try to find them. It\u2019s silly like the others, but\nat least the concept is unique and features some fun moments. This effort stars\nJack Lemmon, Lee Grant, Joseph Cotton, Brenda Vaccaro, Darren McGavin,\nChristopher Lee, Kathleen Quinlan and Gil Gerard. There are also brief\nappearances from James Stewart, and, of course, George Kennedy. The image comes\nfrom a 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative presented in Dolby Vision,\nand the feature arrives with a film expert commentary and trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

And of course, The Concorde\u2026 Airport \u201979<\/em> is also arriving on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray or Blu-ray only. This came near the end of the disaster movie craze and is a giant, hilarious mess. George Kennedy stars with Alain Delon as pilots of a Concorde jet headed to the Olympics in Moscow. When sinister forces decide to shoot down their plane, the leads do everything they can to get to the games. This effort is famous for featuring the lead characters doing a loop in the plane, opening the pilot\u2019s window of the aircraft and shooting a flare into the sky as a decoy to stop a missile from hitting them. Other crazy stuff happens too, and the list of stars are like something you\u2019d see in an episode of The Love Boat. It features Robert Wagner, Susan Blakely, Eddie Albert, Charo, John Davidson, Jimmy Walker, Martha Raye, David Warner and more. And yes, the new master contains a 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative in Doby Vision, along with a film historian commentary and a trailer. You\u2019ll never see this so-bad-it\u2019s-good title looking this amazing again.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you are excited by these titles, there will be a 4K\nUltra HD only box set of the series that will arrive on October 28th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino also is releasing a Blu-ray called Dan Curtis\u2019\nLate-Night Murder Mysteries<\/em> that features four TV-movies from the director\nthat aired on ABC. You\u2019ll get Shadow of Fear<\/em> (1974), The Invasion of\nCarol Enders<\/em> (1974), Come Die with Me<\/em> (1974) and Nightmare at 43\nHillcrest<\/em> (1974). There are introductions to all the films by an authority\non Curtis (who also created Dark Shadows, made The Night Stalker<\/em>, Trilogy\nof Terror<\/em> and, umm, Supertrain<\/em>), and expert commentary tracks on\neverything as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deepstar Six<\/em> (1989) is being reissued on Blu-ray from\nthe distributor as well with the same specs as the previous Blu-ray edition (it\ncan also be purchased as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The early Yorgos Lanthimos effort Dogtooth<\/em> (2009) is\narriving in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set and as a Blu-ray-only release. This\ndark comedy and Best Foreign Language Film nominee at the Academy Awards is\nabout three children who are put through some unusual tests by their parents,\nwho want to protect them from the outside world. Lanthimos supervised this 4K\nrestoration that is presented in Dolby Vision. A commentary with the stars of\nthe film is included, along with a film historian track, multiple interviews\nwith the filmmaker (from 2019 and 2009), deleted scenes and\ntrailers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The .44 Specialist<\/em> (1976) aka Mark Colpisce Ancora<\/em>\nis getting a Blu-ray from RaroVideo U.S.. This Italian film is about a cop who\nmust go undercover to track down two killers connected to the drug world.\nYou\u2019ll get the original Italian and English audio tracks, a film historian\ncommentary and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

King Kung Fu<\/em> (1976) is a curiously titled effort\ncoming on Blu-ray from Reel Vault Inc. that follows a kung-fu fighting gorilla\nfrom China who gets loose in Wichita, Kansas and causes havoc. A making-of is\nfeatured as an extra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Severin is presenting an extras-filled 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray\nand CD box called Danza Maracbra: Volume Four \u2013 The Italian Gothic\nCollection<\/em> which boasts the Italian genre pictures Terror Creatures from\nthe Grave<\/em> (1965), Night of the Damned<\/em> (1971), The Devil\u2019s Wedding\nNight<\/em> (1973) and Baba Yaga<\/em> (1973). All of the films have received 4K\nrestorations from the original camera negative and film historian audio\ncommentaries, cast and crew interviews and more. A Blu-ray and CD only version\ncan also be purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shout Factory is presenting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo\nAmazon exclusive Steelbook of the sequel, Halloween II<\/em> (1981). Expect it\nto be exactly the same as the previous 4K version, just in different packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These notable films arrive on disc with movie\nexpert commentary tracks, critic interviews on the movies and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jessica Chastain chiller Mama<\/em> (2013) is appearing\nas a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d. Guillermo del Toro produced\nthis tale about two girls who reappear after a long disappearance and start\nterrifying their uncle and his girlfriend. The movie has been given a 4K restoration\nfor this release, new interviews with crew members, an original short from\ndirector\/co-writer Andy Muschietti (It, It Chapter Two, The Flash<\/em>) with\nan intro from del Toro, along with an archival commentary with Muschietti and\nproducer\/co-writer Barbara Muschietti, deleted scenes and a featurette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up a Blu-ray of the charming European\nanimated film My Life as a Zucchini<\/em> (2016). The disc also has a\nmaking-of, an animated short, and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shudder is putting another horror title from their streaming\nservice on Blu-ray. This time it\u2019s Reveale<\/em>r (2022) and it arrives with\nmultiple filmmaker commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, a video essay on\nthe movie and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The independent zombie film The Dead Next Door<\/em> (1989)\nis appearing on Blu-ray (or on DVD) from Tempe Digital. A 4:3 1080p HD master\npainstakingly created in 2015 from a 2K restoration using the original\nSuper-8mm film elements. The disc also contains a selection of key\nbehind-the-scenes bonus materials and audio commentaries from previous\nreleases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universal Studios is delivering the popular teen sex-comedy American\nPie<\/em> (1999) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set, as well as a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray Steelbook. The press release states that the discs also contain three\nhours of bonus material.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you enjoy classic monsters, The Bride of Frankenstein<\/em>\n(1935) is arriving as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook. The contents will be\nthe same as the previously released 4K edition, only in Steelbook packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up a 4K Ultra HD-only set called the Dracula\nComplete Legacy Collection<\/em> that has Dracula <\/em>(1931), the alternate,\nSpanish-language Dr\u00e1cula <\/em>(1931), Dracula’s Daughter<\/em> (1936), Son\nof Dracula<\/em> (1943), House of Frankenstein<\/em> (1944), House of Dracula<\/em>\n(1945) and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein <\/em>(1948) with the best\npossible picture quality and all the legacy bonus features from earlier\neditions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Available now through the Vinegary Syndrome website, you can\npurchase a double-feature Blu-ray containing The Black Panther of Shaolin<\/em>\n(1975) and Black Six<\/em> (1973). The first title in this set from AGFA is a\nFilipino martial arts film. The image was taken from the only known 35mm print\nin existence. And the second is considered one of, if not the first all-black\nbiker movies. Mean Joe Greene appears in this title in which a motorcycle gang\ntakes on white supremacists. The feature was preserved from a 35mm print. The\nsecond disc in the set contains Martial Arts Mayhem Volumes 1 to 3<\/em>,\nthree compilation efforts taken from the original 1980s S-VHS masters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cold Journey<\/em> (1975) is a Manitoba-set coming-of-age\ntale about a First Nations teen trying to find his place in the world. The film\nwas based on a true story. It is being put out by Canadian International\nPictures through Vinegar Syndrome\/Canadian International Pictures and, for now,\ncan only be purchased through the Vinegar Syndrome website. It arrives with a\ncommentary, interviews with movie experts, short films from the director, an\nabridged cut of the movie, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire Maidens of Outer Space<\/em> (1956) is a drive-in\nflick about astronauts who land on one of Jupiter\u2019s moons and find a lost group\nof women from Atlantis. The movie was scanned and restored in 4K from a 35mm\nfine grain master and the disc contains film historian commentaries and video\nessays on the picture. You can pick it up anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gang Related<\/em> (1997) is a noteworthy crime film with\nJim Belushi, Tupac Shakur, Dennis Quaid and James Earl Jones about an innocent\nman who gets framed for a crime by crooked cops. Vinegar\nSyndrome\/Cinematographe are delivering a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d Blu-ray with a 4K restoration\nfrom the original negative. It features hours of extras, including a\nwriter\/director commentary, numerous interviews with the director and\nproducers, as well as the executive in charge of music. Archival features are\nalso on the release. This title appears to be only available through the\ndistributor\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can purchase a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo of the\nindie vampire film Habit <\/em>(1995) from Larry Fessenden. This extras-packed\nis being put out everywhere after being a Vinegar Syndrome exclusive. The same\ngoes for No Telling<\/em> (1991) from the same filmmaker. Speaking of which,\nthe following set is only available through the website. Of Monsters and\nMadness: The Films of Larry Fessenden Volume 2 <\/em>presents Wendigo<\/em>\n(2001) and The Last Winter<\/em> (2006) on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. You\u2019ll get\n4K restorations of the movies from the original camera negatives presented in\nDolby Vision, along with new and archival cast, crew and critic interviews,\ndeleted scenes, promo materials and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Playroom<\/em> (1990) is a creeper from the distributor\nthat will now be available on Blu-ray from most retailers.  Sgt.\nKabukiman N.Y.P.D.<\/em> (1990) is the latest Troma movie that will be appearing\neverywhere on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, all courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome. The\nlatter has gotten a 4K restoration from the original camera negative presented\nin Dolby Vision and both titles also include a ton of bonuses<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it is a big week for Warner Bros.. Their Warner Archive\nline is releasing Blu-rays of The Beast of the City<\/em> (1932), The\nBeggar\u2019s Opera<\/em> (1953), Black Samson<\/em> (1974) and I Died a Thousand\nTimes <\/em>(1955).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the studio\u2019s major title is A Nightmare on Elm Street\nCollection<\/em>, containing 4K Ultra HD editions of the first seven films in the\nseries, including A Nightmare on Elm Street<\/em> (1984), A Nightmare on\nElm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge<\/em> (1985), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3:\nDream Warriors<\/em> (1987), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master <\/em>(1988),\nA Nightmare on Elm Street 5:The Dream Child<\/em> (1989), Freddy’s Dead:\nThe Final Nightmare<\/em> (1991) and the underappreciated Wes Craven’s New\nNightmare<\/em> (1994). No Blu-rays are included, just the 4K discs with\nremastered transfers (apparently, the set presents uncut editions of the first\nand fifth titles).
