Welcome to another look at some of the highlights arriving\non 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. Last week was extremely busy, so things are a\nbit slower, but there are still a couple of major releases, interesting\nindependents, and great older pictures receiving big upgrades. So, if you can\u2019t\nmake it out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

EDDINGTON \u2013 The latest from writer\/director Ari Aster (Hereditary,\nMidsommar<\/em>) is a tale set in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. It follows\nthe mayor of a New Mexico town who decides to enforce a lockdown to prevent\nmore cases. However, the local sheriff angrily disagrees with the orders. This\nlawman\u2019s family (who are conspiracy theorists) encourage him to run in a\nmayoral election, leading to escalating confrontations and violence between the\ntwo men. The picture combines elements of thrillers, dark comedies and\nwesterns. Reaction towards the film was more positive than negative. About\none-third of reviewers complained that the movie didn\u2019t take a side in the\narguments presented, focusing on chaos for its own sake. The rest were\nimpressed with the work of the cast and stated that while flawed, this was an\nambitious and interesting film showing a fractured America. It will be\navailable on the A24 website either on 4K Ultra HD or Blu-ray. The movie\nfeatures Joaquin Phoenix, Deirdre O\u2019Connell, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, Michael\nWard and Cameron Mann.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

FREE TIME \u2013 With his 30s approaching quickly, a man decides\nto quit his dull job and try to appreciate life. He embraces spending more time\nwith friends and focusing on his hobbies but soon realizes he really has no\nidea what else to do with himself. Once he changes his mind, the protagonist\nisn\u2019t even certain of how to move forward in his career. This independent\ncomedy was well-received by the press. One or two reviewers found the main\ncharacter annoying and couldn\u2019t relate to his struggles. However, the vast\nmajority did think that the film was accurate and amusing in how it succinctly\ndepicted the struggles 20-somethings at this point in their lives. For the time\nbeing, this is a DVD-only release. The cast includes Colin Burgess, Rajat\nSuresh, Holmes, Jessie Pinnick, James Webb and Rebecca Rose Bulnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

MARLEE MATLINE: NOT ALONE ANYMORE \u2013 This documentary tells\nthe story of actress and activist Marlee Matlin. The picture details her\nchildhood in Illinois, growing up deaf in a hearing family. Initially, she felt\nisolated from the world around her, until joining a deaf theater group. At 21,\nMatlin was cast in Kiss of the Spider Woman<\/em> and won an Oscar for her\nwork. The film shows what followed and the performer\u2019s efforts to raise\nawareness for the deaf. Notices were almost all positive for this effort. A\nlone voice or two complained that the film didn\u2019t offer any great insight, only\nits subject complaining about the movie industry. However, all others stated\nthat Matlin was an inspiring personality and that she and the documentarian\n(who is also deaf) offered unique insight into their lives and experiences, as\nwell as hopes for the future.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

PROJECT GENESIS \u2013 Also released under the title Taklee\nGenesis x Worlds Collide<\/em>, this science-fiction\/action picture from Thailand\ninvolves a scientist distressed by the disappearance of her father some 30\nyears earlier. She returns home to visit her terminally ill mother and\ndiscovers the remnants of a CIA project. The lead finds equipment that can\nallow her to travel to another, alternate timeline and find him. The plot also\nsomehow incorporates giant monsters. This picture hasn\u2019t been seen by reviewers\nin this part of the world, but there are a couple of online writer-ups available.\nThey are upbeat, noting that for a relatively low-budget film, it had big ideas\nand likable characters. Apparently, many of the visual effects look decent and\nthe action is exciting. But they also mention that the picture is too long and\ncould\u2019ve been streamlined and better paced. This is available in a  4K\nUltra HD  and Blu-ray combo pack. War Wanarat Ratsameerat and Paula Taylor\nheadline the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

RED SONJA \u2013 The Marvel comic book warrior Red Sonja has had\nher share of movie adaptations over the years (most notably in 1985), and now\nshe is back in this reboot. A young woman\u2019s village is destroyed by a tyrant.\nShe is captured, picked out to be a gladiator and learns to fight like a\nwarrior. The protagonist eventually unites other outcasts in the kingdom to\ndestroy the ruler and his minions. Critics were only slightly more positive\nthan negative on this version of the story. Almost half commented that the\nbudget was too slim and it suffered from poor visual effects. They also noted\nthat the humorless tone didn\u2019t help matters. Still, slightly more wrote that\neven though the movie was uneven, the lead performer\u2019s charisma helped the\nmovie deliver enough effective sword-and-sandal mayhem to earn it a\nrecommendation. It stars Matilda Lutz, Robert Sheehan, Wallis Day, Luca\nPasqualino and Michael Bisping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

SHARI & LAMB CHOP \u2013 Shari Lewis was a ventriloquist and\nchildren\u2019s entertainer who became famous for creating a sharp-witted puppet\nnamed Lamb Chop that began appearing regularly on Captain Kangaroo in the late\n1950s. She is considered a pioneer in her work and this documentary. It\nchronicles her time growing up in the Bronx and aspiring to become a dancer. An\naccident changed all that, and she instead became a ventriloquist. Viewers\nlearn about the ups and downs of her career and how she changed children\u2019s\nentertainment. The press rated this feature very highly. One voice complained\nthat the picture didn\u2019t offer any new insight and that most could get all the\ninfo they needed on Lewis by going online. However, everyone else described it\nas a detailed and passionate portrait of a woman who followed the beat of her\nown drummer, while still managing to change the entertainment industry for the\nbetter. For now, this is a DVD-only title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE SHROUDS \u2013 The latest from David Cronenberg (The\nBrood, Videodrome, The Dead Zone, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, Crash, A\nHistory of Violence<\/em> and many others) follows the owner of a cemetery who\nhas developed a new business model. A shroud is placed over the deceased,\nallowing loved ones to, over time, watch the body decompose and become one with\nthe earth. The lead\u2019s own wife is buried onsite, and his business is booming.\nBut suddenly, the cemetery is vandalized, there are signs of industrial\nespionage, and the lead\u2019s odd past begins to come to light. More reviewers\nliked this picture than disliked it, although response was all over the place. About\none-quarter found the movie slow and frustrating, also saying they had\ndifficulty figuring out the meaning. But the majority, while admitting the film\nwas perplexing at times, was still compelling. They thought it forced viewers\nto think about mortality, death and grief long after the credits rolled. It\nfeatures Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, Sandrine Holt, Elizabeth\nSaunders and Jennifer Dale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

SOULEYMATE\u2019S STORY \u2013 An asylum-seeker living in Paris finds\na position as a food delivery cyclist. It\u2019s a busy and demanding job that keeps\nhim on his toes. When he learns that he is being given a chance to secure legal\nresidency (or be turned away) in just two days, he must work, prepare and\npractice for an interview that will, one way or another, change his life.\nResponse towards this French picture has been uniformly positive. All of those\nwho saw the movie believed that the film was tense and harrowing to watch. They\nnoted that it felt authentic and didn\u2019t resort to sentimentalism or\nsensationalism. It simply told the truth about the experience of moving to a\nnew country and being forced to relive the past while arguing for the\nopportunity to stay. The cast includes Abou Sangare, Alpha Oumar Sow, Nina\nMeurisse and Emmanuel Yovanie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking for something older you also have some\noptions. Arrow Video is presenting a double-feature Blu-ray containing Three<\/em>\n(2002) and Three\u2026 Extremes<\/em> (2004). These are a pair of Asian anthology\nhorror pictures from. Each includes a trio of dark and disturbing tales from\nfilmmakers like Kim Jee-woon (A Tale of Two Sisters<\/em>), Fruit Chan (Made\nin Hong Kong<\/em>), Park Chan-wook (Oldboy<\/em>) and Takashi Miike (Audition<\/em>).\nFor this Blu-ray set, both movies have been given new 2K restorations. Numerous\nnew and archival cast and crew interviews are included, as well as making-of\nfeaturettes and trailers. The second disc also contains a feature-length\nversion of Chan\u2019s episode called \u201cDumplings\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you enjoy the films of Ti West, he\u2019s been on a roll\nrecently. You can now pick up either a 4K Ultra HD or a Blu-ray \u201cCollector\u2019s\nEdition\u201d mediabook box set called The X Trilogy<\/em> from A24. It contains\nthe recent and well-regarded horror films X<\/em> (2022), Pearl<\/em> (2022)\nand MaXXXine<\/em> (2024) starring Mia Goth. No word on whether this version\ncontains any extra goodies besides the new packaging, so interested parties may\nwant to do a bit of research on the discs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Criterion is releasing a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, as well as\na Blu-ray only edition of the Ken Russell (The Devils, Tommy<\/em>) cult film Altered\nStates<\/em> (1980). It\u2019s a trippy effort with William Hurt about a tenured\nHarvard psychopathologist entering a sensory deprivation tank and conducting\nexperiments on himself in the hopes of discovering an alternate state of being.\nBizarre visions and events follow. Specs for this title list a 4K image\nrestoration presented in Dolby Vision, a film historian audio commentary,\narchival interviews with director Russell and star Hurt, a new talk with the\nspecial-visual-effects designer and a trailer. A book is also included with an\nessay on the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a new David Cronenberg film out on disc today, so\nCriterion is also making A History of Violence<\/em> (2005) available in a 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray combo pack (as well as a standalone Blu-ray). This crime\nfilm is based on a graphic novel and involves a smalltown diner owner whose\nlife is upended when he is identified by mobsters who see him on the news. As\nit turns out, the protagonist has a dark past that now puts his new life in\ndanger. The movie was a critic and was nominated for a couple of Academy\nAwards. It stars Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, William Hurt and Ed Harris. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The new 4K picture restoration for this title was supervised\nby cinematographer Peter Suschitzky and approved by director Cronenberg. It is\nalso presented in Dolby Vision. An audio commentary with Cronenberg is featured\nas an extra, along with a new interview with the screenwriter, as well as\nexcerpts of Cronenberg and Mortensen at the 2014 Toronto International Film\nFestival. A documentary on the production is included, alongside three\nfeaturettes, a deleted scene with commentary, a trailer, a booklet with an\nessay on the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furious Swords and Fantastic Warriors: The Heroic Cinema\nof Chang Cheh<\/em> is  Blu-ray box set from Eureka Entertainment\ncelebrating the films of Chinese director Change Cheh. You\u2019ll get Trail of\nthe Broken Blade<\/em> (1967), The Wandering Swordsman<\/em> (1970), King\nEagle<\/em> (1971), Trilogy of Swordsmanship<\/em> (1972), The Iron Bodyguard<\/em>\n(1973), Men form the Monastery<\/em> (1974), Shaolin Martial Arts<\/em>\n(1974), The Fantastic Magic Baby<\/em> (1975) (which, based on the title\nalone,, I now have<\/em> to see), New Shaolin Boxers<\/em> (1976) and The\nWeird Man<\/em> (1983). The ten films are presented on five discs and arrive with\nfilm historian commentaries, an interview with a Hong Kong film expert on the\ncareer of Cheh, video essays and more. There is also a booklet with writing on\nthe movies, and the set includes impressive, newly created cover artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino Lorber is delivering some new titles as well. The Ex<\/em>\n(1996) is a thriller about a divorced woman who tries to destroy the new life\nof her ex-husband. It stars Yancy Butler, Suzy Amis and Nick Mancuso and was\ndirected by Mark L. Lester (Class of 1984, Firestarter, Commando, Class of\n1999<\/em>) who considers it one of his favorite films. A new master of the title\nwas approved by Lester, and it features new interviews with Butler and Mancuso,\nas well as a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

King and Country<\/em> (1964) aka King & Country<\/em>\nis a British drama set at the end of WWI. A Private is charged with desertion\nand must defend himself in court. A 4K restoration from the original camera\nnegative at Studio Canal was used for this Blu-ray release. It also comes with\na film historian commentary, archival cast member interviews, and a\ntrailer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

You can also purchase a Blu-ray of Radioland Murders<\/em>\n(1994). Produced by George Lucas, it\u2019s a comedic period murder\/mystery about a\ngroup of radio performers being killed during a production. They try to keep\nthe show going while figuring out who is responsible. The cast includes Mary\nStuart Masterson, Brian Benben, Ned Beatty, Corbin Bernsen, Christopher Lloyd,\nJeffrey Tambor, Michael McKean and many more. This disc features a 2K image\nrestoration from the interpositive, a film expert commentary, an interview with\nco-star Benben, and a trailer.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And William Friedkin\u2019s Rampage<\/em> (1987) is arriving in\na 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set, and as a standalone Blu-ray only. The movie\ndepicts the trial of a man after he commits a murder spree. The release\ncontains 4K restorations of both the director\u2019s cut (from the camera negative)\nand recut theatrical version (from the interpositive), both presented in Dolby\nVision. There is a movie historian commentary, interviews with a cast member\nand a crime writer, and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Paramount Pictures is releasing a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\nSteelbook of \u00c6<\/em>on Flux (2005). It\u2019s a feature length live-action\nadaptation of a popular animated series that ran on MTV in the early 1990s. The\nstory involves a female warrior who leads a rebellion against sinister forces\nin control of the world. Charlize Theron plays the lead protagonist. The film\nhas been restored in 4K and is presented in Dolby Vision. You\u2019ll also get\nspecial features on the Blu-ray like archival commentaries and\nmore.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The studio is also putting out a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray 40th<\/sup>\nanniversary Steelbook of the entertaining ensemble comedy, Clue <\/em>(1988).\nShout Factory has also released this title in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set\nfull of bonuses, so you might want to compare features on each version before\nmaking a purchase. The extras aren\u2019t currently listed on the Paramount Pictures\nedition.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of Shout Factory, it\u2019s a busy week for them as\nwell. The stylish Werner Herzog remake Nosferatu the Vampyre<\/em> (1979) is\narriving as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set. Apparently, the Klaus Kinski cult\nfilm features a new 4K transfer of the original 35mm camera negative (of both\nEnglish and German versions of the movie). There are two Herzog commentary\ntracks, a vintage making-of featurette, theatrical trailers and a still\ngallery. It can also be purchased as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Shout\n\u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d exclusive with extras like a different slipcover and two\nposters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo of The\nPlace Beyond the Pines<\/em> (2012), an ambitious crime drama with Ryan Gosling,\nBradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Mahershala Ali, Rose Byrne and Ray Liotta. This\nrelease contains a 4K restoration approved by director and co-writer Derek\nCianfrance (Blue Valentine, Roofman<\/em>), a Cianfrance commentary track,\ndeleted and extended scenes, and a making-of featurette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Oliver Stone crime epic Savages<\/em> (2012) is\narriving as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d. It follows two\nCalifornian marijuana dealers who get caught up with a Mexican Baja Cartel. The\ncast includes Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, John Travolta,\nBenicio del Toro and Salma Hayek. This set features a 4K picture restoration of\nthe unrated version from the original elements supervised and approved by Stone\n(and presented in Dolby Vision) on the 4K disc. The accompanying Blu-rays\ncontain both the unrated and theatrical versions (the latter is also restored\nfrom original elements) of the title. There is a commentary with Stone and\nanother with the crew, new interviews with cast and crew, deleted scenes and a\nmaking-of featurette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Warner Bros. is making the superhero classic Superman\n<\/em>(1978) available on 4K Ultra HD.  It comes with an archival producer\ncommentary, making-of and promo materials. Those interested may want to hold\noff for a big 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray box set of all the Christopher Reeve\ntitles that will be arriving in a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, it\u2019s a slow week for kid-friendly titles.\nHopefully the next edition will make up for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
