Welcome to another look at the newest 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray\nand DVD releases coming your way. This is a relatively slow edition, but there\nare a few interesting new efforts, as well as some major studio catalog\nattractions receiving major upgrades. So, if you can\u2019t make it out to the\nmovies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE GINGERDEAD MAN: MURDER-THON – If you enjoy the Gingerdead\nMan<\/em> horror\/comedy series or are curious about the character, this release\nmight be for you. It is essentially a collection of the best bits from the\noriginal film (co-starring Gary Busey), and its follow-ups, as well as\nappearances in the Evil Bong<\/em> series. Don\u2019t expect much to link it all\ntogether, this is essentially a franchise \u201cgreatest hits\u201d package. As you might\nhave already guessed, the picture is debuting on disc and streaming services,\nso there aren\u2019t any major outlet reviews available for it. A few online genre\nenthusiasts have posted video reviews, noting that while there is nothing new\nhere, it is fun to watch the best moments from all of the pictures. Besides\nBusey, the flick features John Patrick Jordan, Robin Sydney, Sonny Carl Davis\nand Peter Donald Badalamenti II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

HAUNT SEASON \u2013 This independent creeper received a limited\nrelease at theaters and a digital debut last year, but is only now arriving on\nBlu-ray. The plot involves a group of teens who decide to visit a Halloween\nattraction. Walking through, they become concerned that some of the elements\nthey are experiencing seem a little too real. Of course, the group are right\nand soon find themselves locked in and being pursued by a killer. The movie was\nonly seen by a handful of reviewers during its original run, but response was\nmore positive than negative. A few critiqued the story for being predictable\nand thought it didn\u2019t offer much that was new or original. However, more\nthought the dramatic (and occasionally comedic) work of the main cast was\nendearing and they appreciated this little low-budget slasher as a fun\nthrowback to 80s horror.  It features Brent Bentley, Craig Benzine, Ana\nDragovich and Sarah Elizabeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

IN OUR DAY \u2013 A 40-something actress goes on vacation and\nstays with her best friend, as well as the woman\u2019s pet cat. Meanwhile, a lonely\naging poet in declining health finds a new and delicious dish to keep his\nspirits up. Both artists are visited by students hoping to follow similar\ncareers. They have conversations and talk about their life experiences and\nwork, giving advice to the youngsters. This South Korean drama is essentially\ntwo sets of staged conversations about two individuals and their lives as artists.\nIt received a cinema release in its homeland back in 2023, but is only now\narriving on disc in North America. Members of the press who saw the small\nfeature enjoyed it. While few believed the end product was a masterpiece, all\nthought the participants had interesting things to say and called the film\nsweet and sincere. The cast includes Kim Min-hee, Song Seon-mi and Kim\nSunghyun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

MR. DRESSUP: THE MAGIC OF MAKE BELIEVE \u2013 Those who grew up\nin Canada will remember Mr. Dressup (aka Ernie Coombs), an iconic children\u2019s\ntelevision host. The Mr. Dressup<\/em> series was broadcast on the CBC for\nnearly 30 years, with the title character teaching children about patience and\nkindness. The show also featured puppet characters, Casey and Finnegan, whom\nthe morals and messages were often directed at. This award-winning Canadian\ndocumentary was released last year in its homeland and is now arriving on disc\nin the US. The film profiles the entertainer, along with his collaborator\nJudith Lawrence, who operated the puppets. Response towards the movie was very\nupbeat. One reviewer called the movie pleasant, but also felt that it was\nsimply a nostalgia piece with little depth. However, all others stated that\nthey learned a lot of details about the performer and Lawrence that they never\nknew before. They wrote that the picture was charming and helped them realize\nthe grand impact this host made on their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THANK YOU VERY MUCH \u2013 If you\u2019re looking for more\ndocumentaries, this effort chronicles the life of Andy Kaufman. For those\nunfamiliar with the entertainer, he made a huge impression on the comedy scene\nin the 1970s, using new performance art techniques to earn laughs, while also\ncreating the memorable character Latka Gravas on the hit TV-series Taxi,<\/em>\nand baffling some with bizarre personal appearances and stunts that were later\nrevealed as hoaxes. Kaufman tragically died of lung cancer at the age of 35. In\nthis feature, viewers are shown rare, never-before-seen footage of the\nperformer, as well as interviews with friends, colleagues and family members.\nThe press admired the movie. A few felt that they already knew most of the\nfacts presented here and wished for more insight on the figure. Still, the vast\nmajority did assert that anyone who appreciated comedians or comedy would be\nenthralled by this tribute. They felt that while viewers will never fully\nunderstand the inner workings of Kaufman\u2019s mind, this film reveals some\ninsights and interesting observations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

A WORLD APART \u2013 Released as Un Mondo a Parte<\/em> in its\nhomeland, this Italian comedy follows a teacher who is forced to move and work,\nagainst his wishes, in a country village at a tiny school. He has some\ndifficulty settling in with staff and locals, but eventually befriends the\nacademy\u2019s other central employee. Though they have very different\npersonalities, when they learn that the site is going to be closed, they unite\nto try and keep the school open. While the picture hasn\u2019t been seen by many in\nthis part of the world, it did win awards in its home country. Online notices\nsuggest that while the story is a familiar one, the cast are charismatic and\nempathetic. They write that the movie will ultimately win over the viewer and\nmight even inspire a few to stand up for what they believe in. For now, this is\na DVD-only release in North America. Antonio Albanese and Virginia Raffaele\nheadline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking to revisit or catch up with older films,\nthis is another strong edition. Arrow Video is releasing the Teenage Mutant\nNinja Turtles Trilogy<\/em> \u201cLimited Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD only set, as well as a\n\u201cLimited Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD only Arrow Video exclusive, \u201cLimited Edition\u201d\nBlu-ray only version and a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d Blu-ray only Arrow Video\nexclusive. Based on the independent comic book, these adaptations took the\ntitle characters, heroic young mutant turtle crimefighters, and placed them in\na live-action scenario. This is the original film trilogy that includes Teenage\nMutant Ninja Turtles<\/em> (1990), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret\nof the Ooze<\/em> (1991) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III<\/em> (1993). For\nme, the first picture is by far the best of the bunch, but I know several\nindividuals who prefer one sequel to the other, so there are a wide variety of\nfans of each title.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specs include a 4K restoration of the first film taken from the original 35mm camera negative and presented in Dolby Vision, along with the 4K restorations of the sequels taken from the original 35mm interpositives, also presented in Dolby Vision. There are new director commentaries on all three pictures and an extra film historian on the first feature, tons of new interviews with cast and crew, and promo materials. Additionally, there is an alternate UK version of the original film, a featurette on the locations used, an alternate ending from a VHS workprint, and alternate Korean version footage. The third film contains an alternate UK opening. The Arrow store exclusive version comes with double-sided foldout posters with new and original art for the films, a poster recreation of the scroll from the third picture, trading cards, stickers and a Roy\u2019s Pizza loyalty card. Arrow Video is also putting out a 4K Ultra HD \u201cSpecial\nEdition\u201d of the amusing Kevin Smith comedy, Mallrats <\/em>(1995). Unlike the\nearlier \u201cLimited Edition”, this version contains only the theatrical cut,\nalong with a selection of bonus features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Radiance Films is known for its international arthouse fare,\nbut this week they are delivering a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d Blu-ray of the raunchy\nteen comedy O.C. and Stiggs<\/em> (1985). The reason for this actually is\nclear, as legendary director Robert Altman (McCabe & Mrs. Miller,\nNashville, The Player, Gosford Park<\/em>) was behind the camera. The filmmaker\nwas struggling a bit during the 80s, coming off of flops like Popeye<\/em>,\nand so he tried his hand at a commercial genre project. It follows two bored\nteens who decide to cause havoc in their middle-class neighborhood. The movie\nwasn\u2019t well-received and is considered one of the weakest efforts by the\nmoviemaker, but many still remember and admire the wacky effort.  The disc\ncontains a new documentary on the troubled production featuring cast and crew\ninterviews, an interview with the camera operator, a 2005 interview with Altman\non the movie, a trailer, and a gallery of rare production images. It also comes\nwith a booklet featuring archival writing on the film by Altman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saga of the Phoenix<\/em> (1989) is a Hong Kong martial\narts\/fantasy feature with Biao Yen that is arriving on Blu-ray from 88\nFilms.  The original camera negative received a 2K restoration for this\nrelease and extras include a film expert commentary, alternate Japanese footage,\npromo materials, an artcard for the movie and a 40-page book on the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anchor Bay Entertainment is making a Blu-ray available of\nthe indie comedy Mutant Swinger from Mars<\/em> (2009). The film was sold as a\nrecently discovered \u201clost\u201d 1950s science-fiction about Martians attempting to\nlure Earth women back to their home planet. Shot in Michigan in 1998, it is\nperhaps most notable for featuring musician Jack White in a small role. The\nfeature was made just before the artist released the first White Stripes album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s another busy week for Criterion. First, you can pick up\nDavid Byrne\u2019s American Utopia<\/em> (2020) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo\nor as a standalone Blu-ray. Spike Lee directed this film that captures the\nBroadway production of the Byrne album and tour. A 4K master of the movie was\nused for this presentation, supervised by the director of photography. A new\ndocumentary on the project is present on the disc with Bryne, Lee, and others\ninvolved in the show. You\u2019ll also get a trailer on this release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Frankly, the other title from Criterion might be the biggest\nrelease of the week. You can also purchase a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo of Pee-wee\u2019s\nBig Adventure<\/em> (1985) (a Blu-ray only edition is also available). The cult\nclassic comedy stars Paul Reubens as Pee-wee Herman, a unique man child who\nloses his bike and goes on a hunt across the west to find it. It\u2019s a\nwonderfully zany film filled with memorable moments. The picture also marked\nthe feature-film debut of Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands,\nEd Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, Frankenweenie<\/em>, as well as the recent\nNetflix series Wednesday<\/em>). You\u2019ll get a new 4K restoration of the movie\nsupervised and approved by Burton, also presented in Dolby Vision. It comes\nwith an archival commentary from Burton and Reubens, as well as one from\ncomposer Danny Elfman. There is a new interview between Burton and Richard\nAyoade, various new crew interviews, a 2005 discussion with Reubens, excerpts\nfrom the 40th<\/sup> anniversary screenings of the movie. Deleted scenes\nand a trailer are also included. Sounds like a fantastic package that I will\ncertainly be picking up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you enjoy \u201cspaghetti westerns,\u201d you can pick up a Blu-ray\nof Forgotten Pistolero<\/em> (1969) from Diabolik DVD. Leonard Mann plays a\ngunman who seeks revenge on his mother and her lover for murdering his dad.\nThis is a two-disc set containing English and Italian versions of the movie, an\ninterview with Mann and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fun William Castle chiller House on Haunted Hill<\/em>\n(1959) with Vincent Price is arriving on Blu-ray from Film Masters. It follows\na millionaire who offers a huge cash reward to five people if they can survive\nthe night in a haunted mansion. The film has been \u201cnewly restored\u201d for this\nrelease and comes with a movie expert commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Kino is delivering a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo of the\nOscar-nominated family picture Babe<\/em> (1995). George Miller (of Mad Max<\/em>\nfame) co-wrote and co-produced this tale of a piglet with a talent for\nsheepherding trying to find his place on a farm. For this release, a new 4K\nrestoration has been taken from the original camera negative, and is presented\nin Dolby Vision. There is a film critic commentary included, along with one by\nMiller. It also comes with interviews with star James Cromwell, Miller, making-of\nfeaturettes and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Babe: Pig in the City<\/em> (1998) was the sequel that arrived a few years later and was helmed by George Miller himself. It\u2019s also getting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release. This time out, Babe travels to a bustling metropolis to make some money for his struggling farm and gets lost. He meets other homeless animals and attempts to help them survive in a harsh and seemingly uncaring world. The movie was misunderstood during its original release and is every bit as good, and in some respects even more powerful than its predecessor. Its visuals are absolutely stunning and I can\u2019t recommend this movie highly enough (although it will be too intense for small children). Once again, you\u2019ll get a 4K restoration of the movie from the original camera negative presented in Dolby Vision. Additionally, there is a film critic commentary track and an interview with Miller about creating a \u201cdarker world\u201d for the sequel. A trailer is also included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, if you\u2019re okay with only owning the Blu-rays, a\ndouble-feature set of the two movies is also available on the\nformat.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hammer horror feature Scars of Dracula<\/em> (1970) is\nalso arriving as a 4k Ultra HD and Blu-ray set. Christopher Lee returns in\nthis, the sixth film of the Hammer series involving the famous vampire. You\u2019ll\nget a 4K restoration of the movie from the original camera negative presented\nin Dolby Vision, as well as a new film expert commentary, an archival director\nand cast commentary, a documentary on the production, and trailers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the remake of the biopic Walking Tall<\/em> (2004) with\nDwayne Johnson is getting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo release. The original\ntold the story of Buford Pusser, a real-life cop looking for retribution on\nthose he accused of murdering his wife. Curiously enough, just last year the\nTennessee Bureau of Investigation reported that, after reopening the case and\nreexamining remains, evidence now suggests that Pusser\u2019s story was a complete\nfabrication and that he actually murdered his spouse and blamed others for the\ncrime. Thankfully, this version uses the story as inspiration for a fictional\ntake about a cop fighting corrupt forces in his hometown. Besides a new 4K\nmaster sourced from the original camera negative and presented in Dolby Vision,\nthis edition includes a recently recorded film historian commentary, an\narchival Johnson commentary, an archival director and crew commentary, a\nfeaturette on the production, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, gag reel and\ntrailer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stranger on Horseback<\/em> (1955), a western from Jacques\nTourneur (Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie, Night of the Demon<\/em>) is\navailable on Blu-ray from Kit Parker Films. It follows a man who arrives in a\nlawless Arizona town and uncovers a conspiracy. The film has been newly\nrestored in 2K and comes with a film historian commentary, a documentary on the\nproduction, a trailer and an extensive image gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Rockers<\/em> (1978) is a music-based feature set in\nKingston, Jamaica about a drummer who dreams of making it big. When his\nmotorcycle is stolen, he and other musicians from the area try to find it and\ntake down those exploiting their community. The cast includes notable musicians\nlike Leroy \u201cHorsemouth\u201d Wallace, Burning Spear, Big Youth, Dillinger, Robbie\nShakespeare and others. MVD Visual is now delivering a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\ncombo of the title, as well as a Blu-ray only version. Specs include a 4K picture\nrestoration from the original camera negative, a writer\/director commentary, a\nfeature-length documentary on the making of the movie, archival interviews with\nthe filmmaker and the producer, music videos, a poster gallery, radio spots and\na trailer. You\u2019ll also receive a \u201c4K laservision\u201d mini-poster of the cover art\nand more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paramount Pictures is putting out a couple of sets with the\nsame name. Be warned though, as the contents are different depending on the\nformat. The Totally Awesome 80s 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray<\/em> \u201cAmazon\nexclusive\u201d set includes Trading Places<\/em> (1983), Beverly Hills Cop<\/em>\n(1984), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off<\/em> (1986), Top Gun<\/em> (1986) and The\nUntouchables<\/em> (1987). This is a fantastic collection of titles. All the\ndiscs are identical to previously released 4K editions, but packaged together\nin a box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Totally Awesome 80s Blu-ray <\/em>edition has entirely\ndifferent features on it. You\u2019ll receive the Friday the 13th<\/sup>\n8-Movie Collection (<\/em>made between 1980 and 1989), the Crocodile Dundee<\/em>\ntrilogy (1986, 1988 and 2001), Top Gun<\/em> (1986), Planes, Trains &\nAutomobiles<\/em> (1987) and Coming to America<\/em> (1988). Again, these are\nall previously released Blu-rays repackaged in a box set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The studio is also reissuing the out-of-print 4K Ultra HD\nand Blu-ray Steelbook for The Wolf of Wall Street<\/em> (2013). So, if you\nmissed it the first time around, you now have another chance to pick it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young, Violent, Dangerous<\/em> (1976) is an Italian crime\npicture arriving on Blu-ray from RaroVideo U.S.. The original English and\nItalian language tracks are included on the disc, along with an archival\ndocumentary on the production and a film historian commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Shout Factory is delivering the Oscar-winning drama Leaving\nLas Vegas<\/em> (1995) on 4K Ultra HD (no Blu-ray is on this release). The gritty\ntale follows an alcoholic planning to commit suicide while visiting Vegas. His\nplan is delayed after befriending a prostitute. Nicolas Cage won a Best Actor\nAcademy Award for his performance. You\u2019ll get a 4K transfer of the original\nSuper 16mm camera negative presented in Dolby Vision. A commentary track with\nwriter\/director Mike Figgis is also included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Croncenberg\u2019s Rabid<\/em> (1977) is arriving as a 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d from the distributor. It\u2019s an early\nbody horror feature from the director about a woman who develops a strange\ncondition. She eventually attacks others, spreading her horrific infection\nacross the Canadian province of Quebec. The film has been given a 4K scan from\nthe original camera negative for this release, presented in Dolby Vision. There\nis a commentary with writer\/director David Cronenberg, a commentary with a\nCronenberg historian, and a track with an authority on star Marilyn Chambers.\nThere are interviews with multiple Canadian film experts about the picture, a\ntalk with cast member Susan Roman, an archival interview with Cronenberg, a\ndiscussion with executive producer Ivan Reitman, as well as co-producer Don\nCarmody. Additionally, a video essay on Canadian horror is featured, along with\npromo materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SRS Cinema has Death-Scort Service: Trinity<\/em>, a\nBlu-ray containing three independent slashers made between 2015 and 2018. They\nfollow a serial killer targeting escorts in Las Vegas. The set includes\nnumerous extra features. The Japanese revenge thriller Liverleaf<\/em> (2018)\nis also arriving on Blu-ray with plenty of extras. And the Truth or Dare:\nLegacy<\/em> 5-Movie Blu-ray set contains five pictures from the cult\ndirect-to-video slasher series made between 1986 and 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In celebration of its 20th<\/sup> anniversary, Universal\nStudios is presenting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook of the war drama Jarhead<\/em>\n(2005) starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx. This title from director Sam\nMendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Skyfall, 1917<\/em>) follows two\nMarines serving in the Middle East. The release includes a commentary with\nMendes and one with the screenwriter, an intro from the director, new\ninterviews with the cast, deleted scenes, featurettes and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Warner Archive is adding several made-to-order Blu-ray\ntitles to their catalog. You can now purchase I Love Melvin <\/em>(1953), Interrupted\nMelody<\/em> (1955), On Borrowed Time<\/em> (1939), San Antonio<\/em> (1945)\nand The Valley of Decision<\/em> (1945).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Warner Bros. is releasing a 4K Ultra HD and a 4K\nUltra HD Steelbook of Boogie Nights<\/em> (1997) from Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia,\nPunch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, Licorice Pizza, One\nBattle After Another<\/em>). This all-star feature follows workers in the adult\nfilm industry. It was nominated for three Academy Awards. The disc contains a\nHDR presentation of the film, two new panel discussions with the director about\nthe movie, an archival director commentary, an archival cast commentary, nearly\n30 minutes of additional scenes, a music video, outtakes, as well as extended\nbits with John C. Reilly<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up a Blu-ray of the horror picture Chernobyl\nDiaries<\/em> (2012), which features tourists being hunted down by mutated\ntownspeople from the site of the Ukrainian nuclear reactor\ndisaster.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
