It got a\nlimited release and appeared on various streaming outlets last year in\nDecember, but is only now debuting on disc. The story is set on Christmas Eve\nand follows a bickering, extended family who return to their ancestral home for\none final get together before they sell the place. While tensions arise around\nthe table, two teenagers slip outside and try to find their own way to bring\njoy into their lives. Reaction from the press towards the film was generally\npositive. A small number found the characters annoying and didn\u2019t think that\nthe script balanced comedic and dramatic elements well. Still, the majority\nsuggested that while the film was overstuffed, there were plenty of great\nmoments and interesting observations about dysfunctional families. It stars\nMatilda Fleming, Maria Dizzia, Ben Shenkman, Francesca Scorsese, Elsie Fisher,\nMichael Cera, Gregg Turkington, Sawyer Spielberg, Chris Lazzaro and Caveh\nZahedi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nGOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK: LIVE FROM BROADWAY \u2013 The 2005\nfilm Good Night, and Good Luck<\/em> was a well- regarded biographic drama set\nin the 1950s from co-star\/co-writer\/director George Clooney about tensions\nbetween veteran journalist Edward R. Murrow and U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy.\nMcCarthy was an extremist, attempting to spread fear around left-wing\nviewpoints and mislabeling them as communist ideals. Murrow challenged\nMcCarthy\u2019s views, also noting his contradictory arguments. The journalist ended\nup being largely responsible for the politician\u2019s downfall. This is a recording\nof the Broadway stage production of the film. The play was well-received, so it\nstands to reason that if you liked the original movie, this version of the\nstory might appeal to you as well. The cast includes Geroge Clooney, Ilana\nGlazer, Clark Gregg, Mac Brandt, Willer Dagger, Christopher Denham, Glenn\nFlesher and Paul Gross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n HOT SPRING SHARK ATTACK \u2013 Initially set to be released a\nmonth ago, this picture was unexpectedly delayed and is arriving this week.\nIt\u2019s for those who appreciate ultra-low-budget cheeseball films involving\nkiller sharks. Also known simply as Hotspring Sharkattack<\/em>, this Japanese\ncomedy follows visitors who start disappearing while at a hot spring resort.\nThe town mayor, a marine biologist, and a grizzled cop discover a new breed of\nshark that can not only survive in freshwater, but squeeze through narrow\nwaterways. The group tries to stop the menace before all their tourists perish.\nMore reviewers enjoyed this picture than disliked it. About one-third stated\nthat the cliched story, intentionally bad jokes and effects quickly wore out\ntheir welcome. However, most thought the film was poking fun at the subgenre\u2019s\ntropes, resulting in an entertainingly ludicrous and surreal movie experience.\nAnd if you like this one, rest assured that a sequel is already in production.\nThe movie features Daniel Aguilar, Sh\u00f4ichir\u00f4 Akaboshi and Takuya Fujimura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MARMALADE \u2013 This independent British romance\/comedy\/heist\nfilm involves a young, sweet-natured incarcerated man sharing his story with a\ncellmate. This tale involves him caring for a sickly mother whose medication is\nunaffordable, as well as a chance meeting with a mysterious young woman named\nMarmalade. The pair come up with an elaborate robbery plot. In the process of\ndetailing his experiences, he forms a friendship with the other incarcerated\nman, who claims to be an experienced escape artist. They talk about escaping\ntogether, but is either figure exactly who they say they are? About one-fifth\nof critics didn\u2019t buy into all the twists and turns that occurred during the\nfinal act and found the end result unsatisfying. However, the majority were\nimpressed by the work of the cast and the numerous surprises contained in the\nscreenplay. They were also surprised by the amount of heart and charm the movie\npossessed. It stars Joe Keery, Camila Morrone, Aldis Hodge and Amy Warner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NEVERMORE: THE RAVEN EFFECT \u2013 Wrestling enthusiasts will\nlikely be interested in this documentary that chronicles the career of \u201cRaven\u201d\naka Scott Levy, who performed primarily in the ECW league during the 1990s. The\nrebellious figure was not above causing controversy and getting into trouble\nboth in the ring (which was known for its bloody and extreme matches) and in\npublic. This was,, in part, due to his own excessive lifestyle behind the\nscenes. Viewers will hear some wild stories from Levy himself about what was\noccurring behind closed doors during the shows and in the hotels. This feature\nplayed at some festivals, but most critics haven\u2019t seen the picture. Online\nreviews are strong, with many calling it a fascinating documentary with some\nincredible stories. It includes interviews with Chris Jericho, Tommy Dreamer,\nThe Sandman, DDP, Rob Van Dam, Billy Corgan and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n SULTANA\u2019S DREAM \u2013 Inspired by a real science-fiction short\nstory written by Rokeya Hussain in 1905, a Spanish artist living in India\ndecides to go on a lengthy journey and learn what inspired the tale and its\nidea of utopia. As the protagonist travels to new places within the country,\nshe also learns more about author Hossain and how the work came to be created.\nThis animated Spanish feature was produced in 2023. It earned a limited release\nat theaters at the end of 2024, yet it is only now arriving on disc in North\nAmerica. All critics who saw the picture enjoyed it. While most admitted that\nthe narrative was light and went on some unnecessary tangents, they called the\npicture beautifully animated and impressive to watch. Reviewers thought that\nanyone who might appreciate a more surreal and interpretive storytelling\ntechnique would be impressed. The voice cast includes Mary Beard and Miren\nArrieta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n YOU ARE NOT ME \u2013 After leaving for three years, starting a\nnew life with a partner and welcoming a baby, a woman decides to surprise her\nestranged family and return to her childhood home for Christmas. She makes a\nhorrible discovery shortly after arriving. While all recognize the protagonist,\nthe woman\u2019s parents have replaced her with an unknown lady whom they treat as\ntheir daughter. Tension arises as the lead tries to figure out what is going\non, as well as protect her new family. This Spanish chiller was released in its\nhomeland in 2024, before being picked up for North American release this year.\nAll notices for the film have been positive. Write-ups assert that the\npremise is excellent, creating a slow-burn of tension as the main character\nattempts to get her family to talk. They also liked the cast and called the\nfinal act memorably creepy. The movie stars Pilar Almeria, Alvaro Baguena.\nVictor Rodriguez Enguidanos and Anna Kurikka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re looking for something a bit older, there are\nplenty of potential options. First off, AGFA is releasing a couple of\nremarkable clip features. One is Krazee Kidz Video Party<\/em> Blu-ray, which\nis a selection of eccentric children\u2019s films made between 1957 and 1965.\nSpecifically, The Big Bad Wolf<\/em> (1957), a take on the \u201cLittle Red Riding\nHood\u201d fairy tale made in West Germany, and Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors<\/em>\n(1963) from the U.S.S.R., as well as the notoriously amateurish independent\nPhiladelphia production, Fun in Balloon Land<\/em> (1965). You\u2019ll also get an\nunaired pilot for a 1960s kid\u2019s show called Polly Pockets<\/em> (which has\nnothing to do with the toy line), and finally, the campy, animated feature The\nPrincess and the Magic Frog<\/em> (1965). The picture for these efforts was\npreserved from the original 1990s \u201cSomething Weird\u201d S-VHS tape masters, and\nthey come with trailers and eccentric child-themed drive-in spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Movie Orgy<\/em> (1968) is actually one of the week\u2019s\nbiggest titles. This film is famous for being one of the most noteworthy\nunreleased titles out there. Vinegar Syndrome announced its Blu-ray release a\nmonth ago, and advance copies quickly sold out, so one hopes it\u2019ll be repressed\nvery shortly (one notable retailer states they will be stocking it in late\nJanuary). <\/p>\n\n\n\n So, what is so important about this effort? Well, many\nconsider it the first found-footage picture. Future director Joe Dante (Gremlins,\nInnerspace, The \u2018Burbs<\/em>) and future producer Jon Davison (Robocop<\/em>)\nfound and went through a massive collection of 16mm reels, cutting together\nmoments from television programs and B-movies of the 1950s and 1960s, as well\nas commercials, music clips, newsreels, blooper outtakes, satiric short films\nand promotional and government films. According to the press synopsis, they\npieced bits and pieces together in a fascinating way. Segments primarily culled\nfrom about a dozen other films and programs are increasingly intercut to create\nthe effect of a single disjointed story in which numerous monsters and assorted\nsocial menaces seem to inflict themselves simultaneously on various American\ncities and towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The title runs well over four hours and apparently, it\u2019s\nextremely entertaining. So much so that Dante for decades, would periodically\nshow it to packed houses around Los Angeles. No one ever thought it could be\nofficially licensed or released, but here it is. The original 16mm film\nelements were used for this transfer with digital SD inserts used for missing\nfootage. There is an introduction to the feature with Joe Dante, and a trailer.\nSounds phenomenal. Please manufacture some more copies, guys!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beast Wishes: The Fantastic World of Bob and Kathy Burns<\/em>\n(2012) is arriving on Blu-ray from Anchor Bay Entertainment. The documentary\ntells the story of Bob and Kathy Bruns, the goodwill ambassadors of\nscience-fiction film fandom, and features interviews with Joe Dante, John\nLandis and Rick Baker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor is also releasing a Blu-ray of Long Live\nthe King<\/em> (2016), a look at the history of King Kong on screen and the\ncharacter\u2019s enduring popularity. The movie contains interviews with dozens of\ncelebrated writers, artists and filmmakers (including the busy Joe Dante), who\nspeak about the character and its enduring legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Film Movement is putting out Girls Town<\/em> (1996) on\nBlu-ray. It\u2019s a coming-of-age tale about a group of high school seniors that\nstars Lili Taylor. The film has received a new 4K image restoration for this\nrelease, and arrives with a making-of featurette, a discussion with the\ndirector, select scene commentaries with cast and crew, as well as a trailer. A\n20-page booklet is also included in this release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Love\u2019s Whirlpool<\/em> (2014) is a drama set at a Japanese\nsex club. The Blu-ray contains an interview with the director and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The extremely entertaining Japanese rom-com Shall We\nDance?<\/em>(1996) is also appearing on Blu-ray. The story follows an\naccountant who feels like something is missing from his seemingly contented\nlife. He ends up making a big change by taking part in a competitive ballroom\ndancing competition and secretly practicing in some unusual environments. Film\nMovement is presenting a 4K restoration of the original 138-minute uncut\nversion of the film for the first time in North America. Bonuses include a\ndirector introduction, a new director interview, and archival interviews with\ncast and crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The French crime classic Martin Roumagnac<\/em> (1946) is\narriving on Blu-ray from Icarus Films. Jean Gabin takes the role of a nice-guy\nbuilding contractor who is wooed by a femme fatale played by Marlene Dietrich.\nBesides the disc, a booklet is included with writing on the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sightseers<\/em> (2012) from cult British indie director\nBen Wheatley (A Field in England, Free Fire<\/em>) is arriving on Blu-ray from\nIFC Films. This extremely dark comedy tells the story of a very eccentric\ncouple who go on a tour of their home country in a caravan, resulting in\nnumerous deaths. The disc has a new film historian commentary, a director commentary\nwith the cast, a director commentary with the cinematographer, a making-of\ndocumentary, cast and crew interviews, UK and US trailers, and a booklet with\nnew writing on the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino Lorber is releasing a Blu-ray of the Costa-Gravas drama\nHanna K.<\/em> (1983). The film has been given a 2K restoration from the\ninterpositive and arrives with a new film historian audio track, interview with\ncast member David Clennon and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The documentary Italia: Fire and Ashes<\/em> (2021)\nprovides an examination of the origins of the Italian silent film, featuring\nclips from incredible shorts from the beginnings of cinema. It is narrated by\nIsabella Rossellin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paramount Pictures is making a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray of\nthe entertaining thriller Breakdown<\/em> (1994) available. It was previously\nfeatured as part of a box set, but now is getting reissued on its own. Kurt\nRussell and Kathleen Quinlan play a couple whose car breaks down. When she is\nkidnapped, her panicked husband does all he can to find and recover his spouse.\nIf you can accept the premise, the film delivers the goods with a wildly\nentertaining climax involving a showdown involving big rigs. Extras include a\ncommentary with director Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines<\/em>),\ninterviews with the filmmaker, co-star Kathleen Quinlan, and producer Martha De\nLaurentiis. An alternate opening (with an optional director commentary) is also\nincluded, along with trailers and an isolated score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hardcore Poisoned Eyes<\/em> (2000) is a low-budget,\nshot-on-video genre film. It follows a trio of friends who find themselves\ntrapped in an isolated cabin and pursued by satanists. Saturn\u2019s Core Audio\n& Video is releasing a Blu-ray of this title. The disc contains a newly restored\ndirector\u2019s cut created in 2025 from the source material with a filmmaker\ncommentary, a new transfer of the 2000 director\u2019s cut from the original master\ntapes (with an archival director, cinematographer and producer commentary), the\noriginal archival DVD\/VHS cut, a feature-length 25th<\/sup> anniversary\ndocumentary on the production featuring new cast and crew interviews, archival\nbehind-the-scenes footage and bloopers, an archival interview with the\ndirector, a trio of shorts from the director and trailers, as well as a\nreversible sleeve for the disc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shudder is putting out a Blu-ray of The Advent Calendar<\/em>\n(2021), a chiller about an ex-dancer who finds herself out of work and in a\nwheelchair. She finds an antique advent calendar with magical abilities. But as\nthe days pass, the lead learns that for all of the good things the calendar\nseems to bring, just as many terrible things occur. Bonuses include an intro\nfrom the writer\/director, a film historian commentary, a trailer, and a booklet\nwith an essay on the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As you might already know, the North American branch of the\nfantastic Australian outfit Umbrella Entertainment has been recently making\nmore of their titles available in this part of the world. Their latest North\nAmerican release is a Blu-ray of The Chain Reaction<\/em> (1980). The story\nfollows an Aussie engineer at a remote nuclear waste facility. After an\nearthquake occurs, he discovers a dangerous leak and wants to warn the small\nsurrounding community about potentially irradiated water. However, he learns\nthat his bosses would prefer to cover the mess up. They try to kill him, but he\nescapes and finds a vacationing couple.The trio then try to sneak past a\nquarantine of the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Reportedly, this film contains some remarkable chase scenes\nand stunts that Mad Max<\/em> director George Miller helped shoot. The Blu-ray\nboasts a previously restored picture from Umbrella Entertainment, extended\ninterviews from the Not Quite Hollywood<\/em> documentary featuring cast and\ncrew members, featurettes on the production, deleted and extended scenes, an\nearly cut of the movie, a ton of promo material, and a booklet with new writing\non the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The shot-on-video horror movie Psychotropic Overload<\/em>\n(1994) is arriving on Blu-ray from VHSHitfest. It\u2019s about a therapist who\nsuspects one of his patients might be responsible for a series of strange\ndisappearances. The disc includes multiple commentary tracks with the director\n(one also features a cast member), a making-of documentary, a fan appreciation,\na critical appraisal of the movie, and a press gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, there is a new Blu-ray from Wild Eye Releasing, a\ndistributor behind many wild and campy in-house horror pictures like Cocaine\nShark<\/em>, the Ouija Shark<\/em> series, as well as Amityville in Space<\/em>.\nModel Hunger<\/em> (2016) is directed by \u201cscream queen\u201d Debbie Rochon and\ninvolves a former model who, after being passed over for several gigs, decides\nto take revenge on young ladies whom she crosses paths with.
