Welcome back to another look at highlights arriving on 4K\nUltra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. This edition has an impressive mix of big Hollywood\nspectacles, indie features and family-friendly efforts. So, if you can\u2019t make\nit out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

BLAZING FISTS \u2013 Also released under the title Blue Fists:\nThe Breaking Down of Young Blue Warriors<\/em>, this Japanese action film is from\nnoted director Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer, 13 Assassins<\/em>).\nThe plot follows two teens who become close friends at a juvenile detention\ncenter. They decide to rise above their lower-class backgrounds by entering a\nmartial arts tournament. However, in order to succeed, they must resolve their\ntroubled pasts. So far, only a couple of critics in North America have seen\nthis picture. They had very different opinions. One was disappointed, stating\nthat the fight scenes weren\u2019t exciting to watch and that the film focused too\nmuch on melodrama. The other called the film an interesting change of pace for\nthe director, challenging expectations and delivering interesting insight on\nthe sport, as well as coming-of-age films. It stars Kanato Yoshizawa, Danhi\nKinoshita, Gackt and Wataru Ichinose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

DEAD TO RIGHTS \u2013 Based on a true story, this Chinese period\ndrama depicts the horrors of the Nanjing Massacre. During World War II,\nJapanese forces took control of Nanjing in China and committed a series of\natrocities that included the mass rape, torture and murder of civilians. This\nfilm tells the story of a postman and photographer who uses his darkroom as a\nrefugee center. His 15-year-old Chinese\/Japanese assistant also collects images\nof the brutality, collecting them in an album and hiding it from invaders (this\nbook was eventually used to prosecute those responsible after the conflict).\nThus far, only a handful of reviewers have seen the picture, but all of them\ngave it positive reviews. They commented that the film was powerful, the cast\nfantastic, and noted that the movie wisely focused on only a handful of\ncharacters, helping viewers easily relate to their situation and suffering. The\ncast includes Hoaran Liu, Ye Gao, Daichi Harashima, Chuan-jun Wang and Xiao\nWang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

DREAM EATER \u2013 In this independent horror feature, a\nfilmmaker tries to help her boyfriend\u2019s sleepwalking problem by recording him\nat night. She sets up a camera while they are on vacation at a remote cabin in\nthe woods. It isn\u2019t long before his behavior becomes stranger during sleeping\nhours, and she becomes more and more terrified by the recordings. The lead\nbegins to fear that the cause of his condition might be supernatural in origin.\nReaction towards the film was generally decent. About one-third of write-ups\nstated that the movie was overdone, and that viewers would be regularly rolling\ntheir eyes at the dopey actions of the main characters. Still, the majority\ncalled the movie creepy, and suggested that while it wasn\u2019t perfect, it did\ncreate a sense of dread and was a better-than-average found-footage exercise.\nIt features Mallory Drumm, Alex Lee Williams and Robin Akimbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

GREENLAND 2: MIGRATION \u2013 This sequel to the 2021 disaster\nmovie Greenland <\/em>picks up with the central characters having survived a\ndevastating comet impact by taking refuge at the title location. This time out,\nthe survivors decide to travel back through the largely destroyed world in\norder to determine whether they will be able to make a new start somewhere on\nthe planet. Of course, they face various dangers as they survey the wreckage.\nWhile the first picture earned decent notices, the press was more downbeat than\npositive about this follow-up. Almost half enjoyed the work of the star and\ndescribed the picture as a fast-paced feature about perseverance and survival\nin tragic circumstances. Alas, the majority claimed the writing here was weak,\nwith little in the way of tension. They also complained that the film didn\u2019t\nseem necessary after the spectacle presented in the previous instalment. The\nmovie can be purchased as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo or a standalone\nBlu-ray. Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Floyd, Scott Glenn and\nDavid Denman headline the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

HALLOW ROAD \u2013 The parents of a teenager get a shocking call\nfrom their daughter in the middle of the night. She tells them that she has\naccidentally struck a pedestrian with her car on a remote road. The couple race\nto the scene in order to survey the damage. After arriving, they become fearful\nof how the event will affect their child\u2019s future, and decide to try and cover\nit up. But over the course of the night, more secrets are revealed that\nthreaten to tear the whole family apart. This UK\/Ireland\/Czech Republic\nco-production was very well-received by critics. A small number commented that\nafter a good start, the film ultimately fell apart with a hugely disappointing\nand unsatisfyingly fantastical ending. However, everyone else thought the movie\nwas remarkably tense, with great performances and plenty of surprises along the\nway. The movie stars Rosamund Pike, Matthew Rhys, Megan McDonnell, Paul Tylak\nand Stephen Jones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

HUMANE \u2013 Here is a picture that has been available to stream\nsince late 2024 on sites like Shudder, but is only now receiving a Blu-ray\nrelease (as an exclusive through the Vinegar Syndrome website). It\u2019s a chiller\nfrom Caitlin Cronenberg (daughter of filmmaker David Cronenberg) set in the\nfuture during a global environmental crisis. Governments decree that, to\ncontrol the population, citizens must volunteer to take part in a euthanasia\nprogram, or else be conscripted to do so. A privileged, wealthy family meets to\ndiscuss options. Of course, things turn argumentative and bloody over the\ncourse of the story. The film garnered strong responses from the press, with\nthe majority recommending it. About one-quarter didn\u2019t think that the satire\nwas particularly amusing. They also didn\u2019t feel there was anyone to root for in\nthe story. Still, most called the film cutting and darkly humorous in showing\njust how desperate and cruel people will become in order to save themselves.\nThey also liked the performances. The cast includes Jay Baruchel, Emily\nHampshire, Sebastian Chacon and Peter Gallagher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

MARTY SUPREME \u2013 Very, very loosely based on the life of\nprofessional ping-pong player Marty Reisman, this drama is set in the 1950s.\nThe plot involves a young table tennis player from the wrong side of the tracks\nwho is determined to achieve fame by any means necessary. He attempts to\npromote himself and the game, get a business started, while also involving\nhimself with a married woman, and taking part in scams to make ends meet. As\nthe pressure mounts, his extreme acts begin to catch up with him. The film was\nnominated for a number of Academy Awards and earned mostly raves from\nreviewers. A small number hated the character and found the film noisy and\nexhausting. All other critics were wowed. They stated that while the lead\ncharacter was deplorable, the movie was a rush to watch, with incredible\nphotography, memorable performances and plenty of nerve-racking scenarios. It\nis available in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set or as a Blu-ray-only release. It\nfeatures Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, Gweneth Paltrow, Odessa Azion, Kevin O\u2019Leary, Tyler\nOkonma, Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SEARCH FOR SQUAREPANTS \u2013 The latest\nanimated family feature starring the popular sea-faring character (and based on\nthe famous television series) finds the lead struggling to overcome a phobia.\nWhen he accidentally raises The Flying Dutchman from the underworld, its pirate\ncaptain promises to train the sponge and make the protagonist fearless. But in\nreality, the skipper only intends to steal SpongeBob\u2019s soul in order to return\nto the regular world. Reaction to the picture was generally solid. A handful\nthought that this sequel was aimed exclusively at kids with mostly juvenile\nhumor, and wouldn\u2019t impress parents like previous films in the series did.\nStill, the majority of reviewers were amused by the constant supply of\nexaggerated and silly gags and eccentric references, suggesting that once you\ngot onto its wavelength, you\u2019d likely be chuckling along with the film. It can\nbe purchased as a Blu-ray and DVD combo. A Walmart exclusive Blu-ray Steelbook\nis also available. The voice cast includes Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger\nBumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Regina Hall, Mark Hamill and George\nLopez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a big edition for horror enthusiasts. Salem\u2019s Lot<\/em>\n(1979) is arriving as a \u201cLimited Edition” 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video\nwith both the original miniseries version (which you can watch as the two-part\nminiseries or as an extended movie) and the international theatrical cut. I\u2019m a\nhuge fan of the miniseries, which I still feel is one of the best Stephen King\nadaptations. For those unfamiliar with the story, a mysterious figure moves\ninto a small town. It turns out to be a vampire, who slowly sucks the town dry.\nA visiting writer and a young boy team up to fight the threat. Directed by Tobe\nHooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre<\/em>), it\u2019s an incredibly atmospheric\nand effective chiller with great performances and tons of memorably unsettling\nmoments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this release, the original 35mm camera negative of the TV Cut version and a 35mm interpositive of the Theatrical Cut version were scanned in 4K and presented in Dolby Vision. The mini-series version comes with a new movie critic commentary, an archival commentary with the late director Hooper, alternate TV footage, commercial bumpers and the original broadcast version of the \u201cantlers\u201d death. There is also a shooting script gallery. The theatrical version includes a film expert commentary, an interview with a Stephen King biographer, a new movie authority appreciation for the title. Mick Garris (director of The Stand, The Shining<\/em> and Bag of Bones<\/em> King miniseries) talks about the title, and there is a featurette on locations, two other film critic examinations of the feature, as well as promo materials. It also comes with a booklet containing essays on the title, a reversible sleeve with two artwork options, a sticker, and a double-sided fold-out poster with the artwork. Arrow Video is also releasing the \u201cLimited Edition\u201d Eiichi\nKudo\u2019s Samurai Revolution Trilogy<\/em> on Blu-ray, which contains 13\nAssassins<\/em> (1963), The Great Killings<\/em> (1964) and 11 Samurai<\/em>\n(1967). This set contains high-definition transfers of all the titles, film\ncritic commentaries on all three movies, video essays on aspects of the\npictures, archival interviews and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some time ago, Cinematographe put out elaborate \u201cLimited\nEditions\u201d of a couple of titles. Now, you can pick up The Gambler<\/em> (1974)\nas \u201cStandard Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, as well as a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d\n4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray of the great Michelle Pfeiffer comedy, Married to\nthe Mob<\/em> (1988). Specs and bonuses should be exactly the same, only in\nsimpler packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criterion is delivering The Blade<\/em> (1995) as a 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray combo and a Blu-ray only disc. Hong Kong director Tsui\nHark (Shanghai Blues<\/em>, the Once Upon a Time in China<\/em> series. Twin\nDragons<\/em>) helms this martial arts revenge tale. The movie was newly restored\nin 4K for this release and is presented in Dolby Vision. It comes with a Hong\nKong cinema expert commentary, a 2006 documentary about wuxia action films, a\nvideo essay on the movie, footage of Hark from the 2011 New York Asian Film\nFestival, an alternate English-dubbed track, the English-version opening and\nclosing credits, and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distributor is also making the French feature A Man\nand a Woman<\/em> (1966) available on Blu-ray. Two widowed single parents\nexperience the trials of raising children alone and begin to fall in love with\neach other. A 2K restoration of the movie was supervised and approved by the\ndirector, and the disc includes a director interview, a making-of documentary,\narchival footage of the movie debuting at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival, as\nwell as a short from the filmmaker, and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Discotek Media is releasing the original Bangkok\nDangerous<\/em> (1999) on Blu-ray. It follows a deaf-mute hitman working in the\ntitle location. You can also pick up a Blu-ray of Cutie Honey: Tears<\/em>\n(2016), a Japanese effort about a woman fighting for the rights of the poor\n(who may be a cyborg). The wild and crazy zombie picture Sars Wars: Bangkok\nZombie Crisis<\/em> (2004) is also getting a Blu-ray release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Australian drama Somersault<\/em> (2004) is appearing\non Blu-ray from Film Movement. It follows a teen who must restart her life\nafter an encounter with her mother\u2019s boyfriend. The film has been restored in\n4K from the original 35mm master negative. It comes with a director commentary,\na short from the director, a making-of, a featurette on the cinematography, and\ndeleted scenes with commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s another busy edition for Kino Lorber. I wouldn\u2019t pick\nthis up, but if you really want to, you can own Leni Riefenstahl\u2019s German\ndrama, The Blue Light<\/em> (1932), which comes with a film historian\ncommentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malfeasance: Four Films by Yves Boisset<\/em> is a Blu-ray\nset of the French titles Angel\u2019s Leap<\/em> (1971), Mad Enough to Kill <\/em>(1975),\nThe Woman Cop<\/em> (1980) and Rise Up, Spy<\/em> (1982). It\u2019s a mix of\nthrillers and crime pictures. Three of the four have been given 4K restorations\n(the other has received a 2K upgrade) and there are film historian commentaries\nfor all the features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of Zenda<\/em> (1979) is a Peter Sellers\ncomedy about two lookalikes (a cab driver and a king) who switch places. And\nthere\u2019s also a new film historian commentary and a trailer included on the\nBlu-ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A couple of Kino releases were delayed and are finally\narriving today. You can now pick up the Oscar-winning biopic Ray<\/em> (2004)\nwith Jamie Foxx in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set, and the excellent Peter\nSellers comedy The Return of the Pink Panther<\/em> (1975) as a 4K Ultra HD\nand Blu-ray combo or a standalone Blu-ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a double-feature Blu-ray of the exploitation pictures The\nSexploiters<\/em> (1965) and Raw Love<\/em> (1965) is also available from Kino.\nExtras include an audio commentary and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned, Greenland 2<\/em> is a new release this week.\nIf you\u2019re a fan, you can also go back and purchase the original Greenland<\/em>\n(2020) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo or as a standalone Blu-ray from\nLionsgate. Besides the 4K upgrade, now specs on the release have been listed as\nof this writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After receiving a Paramount Presents edition a few years\nback, the comedy The Court Jester<\/em> (1955) with Danny Kaye is now being\noffered as a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d Blu-ray from the studio. Set in medieval times,\nthe plot involves the title character being mistaken for a deadly assassin.\nDetails will be the same, only in simpler packaging. Since that was a few years\nago, it includes a 6K picture restoration, a featurette with Leonard Maltin\ntalking about the film, and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same is true for the Kirk Douglas\/Anthony Quinn western Last\nTrain from Gun Hill<\/em> (1959), which initially arrived as a Paramount Presents\ntitle, and now a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d Blu-ray. It also should arrive with a\nLeonard Maltin featurette and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Severin Films is rereleasing \u201cStandard Editions\u201d of some\ncult items from some months back. The British science-fiction movie The\nFinal Programme<\/em> (1973) is coming as both a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD\nand a separate \u201cStandard Edition\u201d Blu-ray. The \u201cStandard Edition\u201d Razor\nBlade Smile<\/em> (1998) can be picked up as either a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\ncombo or standalone Blu-ray. The latter title is a British effort about an\nassassin who also happens to be a vampire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A \u201cStandard Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo of the\nJess Franco feature She Killed in Ecstasy<\/em> (1971) is arriving. This has\neverything on the previous edition except the soundtrack CD. And the same\nfilmmaker\u2019s Vampire Lesbos<\/em> (1971) is also being made available as a\n\u201cStandard Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shout Factory is rereleasing the Adam Sandler comedy Little\nNicky<\/em> (2000) as a Blu-ray Steelbook. Again, all the contents are the same\nas the previous edition, only in new packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distributor is putting out one fresh title this week. Outbreak<\/em>\n(1995) is getting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d, which is\nwonderful because it hasn\u2019t been available for some time. This is an all-star\ndisaster movie about a deadly airborne virus that spreads in California. A team\nof Army doctors and scientists do their best to try and control the outbreak\nwhile trying to create an antiserum before the area is bombed into oblivion.\nThe cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Donald\nSutherland, Kevin Spacey, Cuba Gooding Jr., Patrick Dempsey and Zekes Mokae.\nThe film has been given a 4K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative\nand is presented in Dolby Vision. Alas, it doesn\u2019t look like the title will\nhave much in the way of special features, but at least you will be able to pick\nit up with a high-quality image.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universal Studios is releasing some classic titles on\nBlu-ray. They include the Bob Hope comedy, The Big Broadcast of 1938<\/em>\n(1938), Gambling Ship<\/em> (1933) with Cary Grant, the Fred Astaire\/Ginger\nRogers musical The Gay Divorcee<\/em> (1934), Give Me a Sailor<\/em> (1938)\nwith Hope, as well as This is the Night<\/em> (1932) featuring Cary Grant, and\nanother Bob Hope comedy, Variety Girl<\/em> (1947).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vinegar Syndrome is putting out several new titles this\nweek, although most are exclusives available only through their website. The\nfirst is the Italian horror film Bakterion<\/em> (1982) aka Panic<\/em>,\nwhich is arriving as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo. It\u2019s about a scientist\nwho turns into a blood-drinking monster. An agent must stop him before he\nspreads his condition to others. The film has been restored in 4K from the 16mm\noriginal camera negative and is presented in Dolby Vision. It comes with a film\nhistorian commentary, interviews with make-up artists on the movie and\nalternate English titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Body of Evidence<\/em> (1993) is arriving as a 4K Ultra HD\nand Blu-ray combo Vinegar Syndrome exclusive. This thriller stars Madonna and\nWillem Dafoe and was considered a flop during its original release (winning a\nRazzie and being nominated in several categories). Both the director\u2019s cut and\nthe theatrical version have been given 4K restorations from the original camera\nnegative and are presented in Dolby Vision. Additionally, there is an interview\nwith the director, the cinematographer, a video essay on the movie, an archival\nmaking-of featurette, promo materials, and a 40-page book with writing on the\nfeature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Vinegar\nSyndrome website exclusive of the feature, Demonwarp<\/em> (1988). It\u2019s a\nnutty science-fiction\/horror movie that features kids fighting off a bigfoot\nmonster and aliens. George Kennedy stars in the picture. This release features\na director and producer commentary, numerous lengthy cast and crew interviews,\nand an image gallery with tons of promo materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Devil\u2019s Rain<\/em> (1975) is a film about a Satanic\ncult terrorizing a family who unknowingly hold a book of importance to the\nvillains. It features Earnest Borgnine, Eddie Albert, William Shatner, Ida\nLupino and Tom Skerritt. You can pick up a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Vinegar\nSyndrome exclusive version or \u201cStandard Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray that\nwill be available everywhere. The film has been given a 4K restoration from the\noriginal camera negative, and comes with a director and a film historian commentary.\nNumerous cast and crew discussions, as well as promo materials, are listed as\nbonuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forgotten Gialli: Volume 9<\/em> is also appearing on the\ncompany\u2019s website. This \u201cLimited Edition\u201d Blu-ray set contains 2K restorations\nof the Italian thrillers Murder in Blue Light<\/em> (1991), Bugie Rosse<\/em>\n(1993) and Madness<\/em> (1994). Film historian commentaries and cast and crew\ninterviews are listed as extras on the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intensive Care <\/em>(1991) is a chiller from the\nNetherlands about a surgeon who falls into a coma and wakes up years later as a\nmonster. It features George Kennedy in a small supporting role. This Vinegar\nSyndrome website exclusive Blu-ray delivers the film newly restored in 2K from\nthe 35mm camera negative. It also boasts a film historian commentary, a\ndiscussion with the director, behind-the-scenes footage and an international\ntrailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Warner Archive is putting out several made-to-order\nBlu-rays of catalog titles. You can pick up The Gay Divorcee<\/em> (1934), Honky\nTonk<\/em> (1941), It All Came True<\/em> (1940), The Man Who Came to Dinner<\/em>\n(1942) and Tea and Sympathy<\/em> (1956). Additionally, if you appreciate old\nSaturday morning cartoons, the Scooby-Doo<\/em> spin-off, Scooby\u2019s All-Star\nLaff-A-Lympics: Season 1<\/em> (1977-1978) is also arriving on Blu-ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
