This film from Focus Features will be opening exclusively\nin cinemas on May 29th<\/sup>, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve seen a great many films over the years about World War\nII, with dozens of pictures recreating invasions and epic battles, to tales\nabout citizens trying to survive the Nazi occupation. It would even be\nunderstandable to think that the majority of stories about the conflict have already\nbeen told. However, the new war drama Pressure<\/em>, based on a popular stage\nplay, does have a unique perspective. And, while a movie about World War II and\nweather patterns might seen like something only an octogenarian would enjoy, it\nactually works far more effectively than one would anticipate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the film begins, German forces have occupied France and\nseem ready to take all of Europe. With the fate of the war in the balance, Allied\nforces plot to land on the beaches of Normandy in an attempt to liberate the\ncountry. Known as D-Day, this was and remains the largest seaborne invasion in\nhistory. The film begins with Scottish meteorologist James Stagg (Andrew Scott)\nbeing recommended by Prime Minister Winston Churchill to study weather patterns\nand offer Major General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Brandan Fraser) his opinion on\nthe specific day for the operation. US Air Force meteorologist Irving P. Krick\n(Chris Messina) believes that growing storms in the Atlantic Ocean will clear\nup and give his approval, but the blunt, unpopular Stagg interprets the data differently.\nHe expresses concern that the mission will fail if it goes ahead as planned,\nmuch to the scorn and dismay of those around him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As noted earlier, the film is based on a stage play, meaning\nthat the story isn\u2019t focused on the invasion itself, but instead the\nbehind-the-scenes arguing about tactics and the weather\u2019s potential effects on\ntheir battalion movements. It is essentially about a major difference of\nopinion between Stagg and the others, and his attempts to convince those around\nhim of his viewpoint. Naturally, Krick and others don\u2019t want to be contradicted\nby a stranger who will cause a delay. Yet, while the film is a group of talking\nheads, the filmmaker does an excellent job showing the incredible stakes in making\nsuch a decision. It\u2019s rare for a war movie to show the intense psychological weight\nof those ordering a massive attack, but this film does it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is another good role for Fraser, who has given several\nstrong performances in recent years. He capably displays Eisenhower\u2019s\nleadership skills and imposing nature when speaking to underlings, while also\ndisplaying a deep fear of the potentially devastating outcome should anything\ngo wrong. Behind the scenes, there is a sense of doubt guilt over a trial\noperation that went horribly wrong and ended in many deaths, adding an extra\nlayer to the character. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But of course, Stagg is the lead, and Scott is exceptional\nin his role. What could have been a very dry tale is well-handled here, with\nthe meteorologist feeling the odd-man-out in the scenario and struggling to\ncope with aggressive generals and others ready to leap in, guns blazing. There\nis also a personal struggle for the character, who receives horrible news while\nbeing verbally attacked by those around him. Despite his at time brusque\nmanner, Scott makes the character very likable and relatable. It\u2019s clear that\nthe cast have done their work when moments later in the film involve\nindividuals standing around and waiting to see if and how the weather changes.\nIf they weren\u2019t as good as they are, this could have been unintentionally\namusing, but the performers manage to create palpable tension as they look up\nto the skies and wait. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admittedly, this movie does have a minor issue or two. As\nwritten, a character or two in the film are depicted as relentlessly\nwarmongering or perhaps a bit too aggressive in their negative treatment of\nthose around them. The film may be a little too sentimental during its denouement,\nand since most involved will be aware of what ended up occurring, it is\ndifficult for some aspects of the film to surprise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, this is a fascinating story that moves at a zippy pace\nand benefits greatly from its impressive cast. I had no idea of all that went\ninto the planning of the D-Day invasion (at least, as far as weather goes), and\nthis also allows for a fresh angle on a major historical event. Pressure <\/em>is\na war movie unlike many of its ilk, and will make a positive impression on\nmultiple age groups in the process. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
