The story is set around\nThanksgiving and involves a menacing creature that is described as half-turkey\nand half bigfoot. Locals in a small Connecticut town encounter the beast, and\nare brutally killed. But when one of the victims captures Super 8mm footage of\nthe monster before being slain, the footage is discovered. A professor who\nspecializes in ancient lore sets out to find the creature and stop it. At\npresent, there are only one or two online write-ups available for the picture\nand it feels like while they haven\u2019t stated it, they have some connection to\nthe production. So interested parties will just have to go in cold and hope for\nthe best. This is a DVD-only release. Chris Heikka, Rogan Russell Marshall and\nJim Bunny Bundshuh headline the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nLORNE \u2013 Lorne Michaels is a famous Canadian\/American\ntelevision and film producer, best known for creating and producing Saturday\nNight Live<\/em>, as well as producing The Kids in the Hall<\/em> and The\nTonight Show with Jimmy Fallon<\/em>. He\u2019s also responsible for the many film\nspin-offs from various programs. This documentary explores his life and career\nand divulges wild stories along the way. Naturally, many famous faces share\ntheir experiences working with Michaels. The press generally liked this\npicture. About one-quarter did complain that the movie was little more than a\ntribute piece that didn\u2019t share personal insight or detail about its subject.\nStill, most found it to be an entertaining piece on Michaels with a lot of\nfantastic interviews and funny stories from great comedians. There are\nappearances by Fred Armisen, Alec Baldwin, Dana Carvey, Chevy Chase, Michael\nChe, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, AL Franken, Bill Hader, Steve Martin, Bruce\nMcCulloch, Kate McKinnon, Seth Meyers, John Mulaney, Mike Myers, Laraine\nNewman, Conan O\u2019Brien, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Andy Samberg, Adam Sandler,\nDavid Spade, Kenan Thompson, Kristen Wiig, Bowen Yang and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A MAGNIFICENT LIFE \u2013 This animated feature is an unusual\nbiopic about the life of Marcel Pagnol. Pagnol was an acclaimed playwright,\nnovelist, and filmmaker. Some of his notable written works include the books The\nMarseille Trilogy, My Mother\u2019s Castle<\/em>, and My Father\u2019s Glory<\/em>, as\nwell as plays like Topaze<\/em> (for which he directed two film adaptations)\nand other screenplays like Jean de Florette<\/em>. In this tale, we see Pagnol\nas a young boy. The child is visited by an older version of himself, who\nattempts to inspire him and give him advice about his future. This picture is a\nco-production between France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the US that received\ngood, but not stellar notices. More than one-third commented that it was\nbeautifully animated, but that the story had little to no conflict and just\nmeandered as it recreated scenes from the Pagnol\u2019s life. Still, the majority\nfound the film beautiful and inspiring as it chronicled important personal\nexperiences that influenced the artist\u2019s work and beliefs, as well as his\nimpact on French culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n PROUD PRINCESS \u2013 If you enjoy European fairy tales, this\nanimated adaptation of a famous Czech fable may be for you (or your kids). The\nplot involves a young King who becomes enraptured by a lady in a painting.\nAfter seeking out the young woman in the picture, he learns that she is a\nprincess from another kingdom. The proud and blunt figure initially rejects the\nKing, so he attempts to win her over by pretending to be her gardener.\nEventually, the two fall for each other, but are forced to elope in order to be\ntogether. This picture is well-regarded in its homeland, but not as familiar in\nthese parts. Only a few critics have seen this adaptation. One stated that they\ndidn\u2019t care for the princess and that the story lacked the necessary magic and\nwonder. However, slightly more were impressed with the animation and thought\nany kids who enjoy fairy tales would be entertained by this tale. This is\ncurrently a DVD-only release. The English-language voice cast includes Willliam\nAttenborough, Georgia Lowe, Max Bennet and Al Parker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n SHE DANCES \u2013 After separating from his wife after a family\ntragedy, a single dad is asked to return home in order to assist his estranged\nteenage daughter. Specifically, he is told to escort the young dancer and her\npartner across the country so that they can take part in a competition. It\u2019s an\nawkward journey, but the family members try to make it work. The dad eventually\nrealizes that he must deal with past traumas in order to move forward and be a\npart of his daughter\u2019s life. Critics ranked this independent comedy\/drama very\nhighly. One or two thought that the picture needed to choose between drama or\nhumor and had trouble with the tonal changes throughout the journey. Everyone\nelse called the picture funny, beautiful and ultimately moving as it dealt with\nparent-child issues in a sensitive and authentic way. They also raved about the\nperformances, citing the lead actor in particular and calling this one of his\nbest roles. The movie stars Steve Zahn, Audrey Zahn, Ethan Hawke, Rosemarie\nDeWitt, Sonequa Martin-Green and Wynn Everett. For the time being, this title\nis only available on DVD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A YARD OF JACKALS \u2013 Set in 1975, this Chilean effort\ncombines elements of horror, drama and thriller. A disabled architect\nliving under the dictatorship tries to lead a quiet existence while caring for\nhis aged, sickly mother. When neighbors move in, the lead can\u2019t help but notice\ntheir bizarre behavior and seemingly sinister activities. Panicked, the architect\nisn\u2019t sure what to do, especially when these strange figures begin intruding\ninto his own life. This Spanish-language film has played at a few festivals,\nwhere it was positively received and earned a few award nominations. Only a\ncouple of notices have appeared from critics in North America, but they have\nall been upbeat. These reviewers suggest that the feature leans into real-world\nhorrors, calling it prescient and suggesting that the film will send chills\ndown the spine as it addresses Chile\u2019s dark era under authoritarian rule. The\ncast includes Juan Cano, N\u00e9stor Cantillana and Consuelo Holzapfel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Don\u2019t worry if there isn\u2019t anything new that strikes your\nfancy, as a great number of older titles are coming your way this week. Arrow\nVideo is delivering a few \u201cStandard Editions\u201d of previous releases. This\nincludes a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD of the Jennifer Lopez\/Vince Vaughn\nserial killer thriller The Cell<\/em> (2000). All the discs contents should be\nthe same as in the previous edition, only in simpler packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same goes for the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray \u201cStandard\nEdition\u201d of the Vin Diesel science-fiction sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick<\/em>\n(2004). A \u201cStandard Edition\u201d Blu-ray of the Abel Ferrara revenge picture<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ms. 45<\/em> (1981) is also arriving, as well as a\n\u201cStandard Edition” 4K Ultra HD disc of the Jason Patric\/Ray Liotta cop\ndrama, Narc<\/em> (2002). And, after receiving a 4K Ultra HD exclusive\n\u201cLimited Edition\u201d, those who want the set on Blu-ray can now purchase a\n\u201cSpecial Edition\u201d Blu-ray set of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trilogy<\/em>,\ncontaining Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles<\/em> (1990), Teenage Mutant Ninja\nTurtles II: The Secret of the Ooze<\/em> (1991), and Teenage Mutant Ninja\nTurtles III<\/em> (1993) \u201cSpecial Edition\u201d Blu-ray<\/p>\n\n\n\n As far as new titles go, Arrow Video is also presenting Marlowe <\/em>(1969) as a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d Blu-ray. Pictured above and to the left, the story is based on the Raymond Chandler novel The Little Sister<\/em>, and follows the title detective (played by James Garner) investigating a series of icepick murders. The original 35mm camera negative was given a 4K restoration for this release. It comes with a movie critic appreciation piece, a trailer and an image gallery. You\u2019ll also get a booklet with writing on the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s a busy month for anyone who enjoys the movies of Jackie\nChan (a big set from another distributor is arriving later this month). In the\nmeantime, 88 Films is presenting a couple of famous titles featuring the\nmartial arts star. Project A<\/em> (1983) is arriving as a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray set and it\u2019s a comedy\/adventure film about pirates that features\njaw-dropping stunts. You\u2019ll get a nifty image restoration of both the Hong Kong\nversion and an extended cut in Dolby Vision. Additionally, it comes with a film\nexpert commentary track. There is also a Lunan Year intro to the film from\nChan, and promo materials like trailers. If that wasn\u2019t enough, you\u2019ll also\nreceive lengthy interviews with cast and crew, outtakes, the Japanese version\nending, a making-of<\/p>\n\n\n\n Project A: Part II<\/em> (1987) is an even bigger\nproduction that is getting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo upgrade. Besides a\n4K image restoration of both the Hong Kong cut and the longer Taiwan version\npresented in Dolby Vision, this release includes a new interview with stuntman\nMars, tons of archival interviews with Chan, as well as the cast and crew.\nGreat stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All3Media is releasing a Blu-ray of the documentary Diana:\nA Definitive Portrait<\/em> (2021), which naturally focuses on Princess Diana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cinema Guild is delivering a Blu-ray containing the Belgian\ndrama, Here<\/em> (2023). An earlier title from the same filmmaker, Ghost\nTropic<\/em> (2019), is included as a bonus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n West Indies: The Fugitive Slaves of Liberty<\/em> (1979) is\na French period musical that critiques the country\u2019s colonialism in Africa and\nits oppression and the rebellion that followed. Criterion is delivering a\nBlu-ray of the picture. It contains a 4K digital restoration of the movie, a\nprogram featuring archival interviews with the director, a recent discussion\nabout the movie with an African cinema scholar, an archival talk with the\ncinematographer, trailers, and an essay on the production and film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you didn\u2019t pick up the \u201cSpecial Edition Exclusive\u201d\nthrough the Vinegar Syndrome website, Deaf Crocodile Films is now putting forth\na \u201cStandard Edition\u201d Blu-ray of the interesting Estonian sci-fi\/horror effort Dead\nMountaineer\u2019s Hotel<\/em> (1979). All features on the disc should be the same as\nin the previously released version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Trouble with Terkel<\/em> (2010) is a well-regarded\nDanish animated family movie. Indican has the North American rights to the\npicture and is making a Blu-ray available of the title. It appears to be dubbed\ninto English, as opposed to being in Danish with English subtitles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino is delivering a Blu-ray of the French\/Italian\/Mexican\nthriller, Birds of Prey<\/em> (1968). The story is set in a South American\ncountry in the 1930s and involves a mercenary who sets out to assassinate the\nhead of state. For this release, a new 4K restoration of the film from the\ncamera negative has been provided by Studio Canal. Extras include a film\nhistorian commentary and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Vertigo for a Killer<\/em> (1970) is a French hitman\nthriller about a hired killer who refuses to shoot his target and finds himself\non the run from his employer and the figure\u2019s goons. Like the previous title,\nthis Blu-ray contains a 4K image restoration from the camera negative courtesy\nof Studio Canal. A film expert commentary is also featured on the disc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re looking for B-movie horror, Leomark Studios is\nputting out a Blu-ray of Night of Bloody Horror<\/em> (1969), featuring a\nyoung Gerald McRaney as a psychopath tormented by the visions of his brother\nwho was murdered 13 years earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Wes Craven\u2019s Scream 4 (<\/em>2011) is a decent sequel in\nthe popular horror series. In celebration of its 15th<\/sup> anniversary,\nyou can now pick up a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo of the movie from\nLionsgate, and a 4K Ultra HD Lionsgate Limited Steelbook exclusively through\ntheir website. It features the surviving cast from the original trilogy coming\ntogether once again when a new series of murders begin occurring in their\nhometown. Besides the upgraded picture quality (presented in Dolby Vision),\nthis latest edition contains new featurettes on the production and its\ndirector, as well as an archival commentary with Craven and the cast, deleted\nand extended scenes, an extended ending, a gag reel, the EPK for the film,\njunket interview and promo materials. The contents of the Lionsgate Limited\nedition are the same, only in Steelbook packaging featuring art by Gnah Studios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s a fantastic week for Shout Factory. First up is the\nvery funny Steve Martin\/Eddie Murphy comedy Bowfinger <\/em>(1999), which is\narriving as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo. It follows a struggling film\ndirector dealing with all sorts of odd Hollywood personalities as he attempts\nto complete a low-budget feature. You\u2019ll receive a 4K transfer of the original\ncamera negative, presented in Dolby Vision and approved by director Frank Oz (Little\nShop of Horrors, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Death at a Funeral<\/em>). Oz provides\na commentary track, and there is a featurette looking back at the film with Oz,\nas well as deleted scenes, outtakes and a spotlight on location featurette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you grew up in the late 1980s, The \u2018Burbs<\/em> (1989) was a big film. It\u2019s getting a \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release from Shout Factory. Tom Hanks plays a frustrated suburban dad who begins to suspect that his neighbors might be a family of maniacal killers, which leads to his sanity being tested. This amusingly eccentric film from Joe Danter (The Howling, Gremlins, Explorers, Innerspace, Matinee<\/em>) benefits from a great cast that includes Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun, Corey Feldman, Wendy Schaal, Henry Gibson, Courtney Gains and Robert Picardo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This release features a 4K restoration of the original camera negative in Dolby Vision supervised and approved by Dante. There are two film historian commentary tracks, a commentary with the screenwriter, a making-of, archival interviews with Dante, cinematographer John Hora, as well as the editor. An alternate ending is included along with promo materials. But, of course, the highlight is the workprint from Dante\u2019s archive. It presents an extended version of the movie with some extra bits and the original, darker ending that was rejected by studio heads. It features the lead character, played by Hanks, receiving his just desserts for his extreme behavior and action against the neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can also pick up a Blu-ray of the biographical UFO\nmovie, Communion <\/em>(1989). Horror author Whitley Strieber, who wrote the\nbooks The Hunger<\/em> and The Wolfen<\/em>, believed that he had been\nabducted by aliens, and this film tells the story of his experiences with\notherworldly beings. Christopher Walken plays the writer in an\u2026 intense and\ninteresting performance. The Blu-ray contains two commentary tracks. One is with\ndirector Phillipe Mora (The Beast Within, Howling II: \u2026. Your Sister is a\nWerewolf<\/em>) and the second features Mora and the publisher of UFO Magazine.\nOuttakes, behind-the-scenes footage and trailers are also included<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re curious about early Marvel adaptations, you can\npurchase the TV-movie edition of Dr. Strange<\/em> (1978) on Blu-ray. It aired\non CBS, with Peter Hooten playing the superhero, who is forced to square off\nagainst a sinister sorceress (played by Jessica Walter). This version includes\na new high-definition restoration from original film elements, as well as a new\npop culture historian commentary track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meatcleaver Massacre<\/em> (1977) is a notorious slasher\nabout a college professor who seeks revenge on the students who attacked his\nfamily by invoking a demon. Christopher Lee stars in this B-movie with an\ninteresting behind-the-scenes story. The film\u2019s original director was fired,\nand replaced with Ed Wood (yes, that Ed Wood!) who ended up completing the\npicture. He isn\u2019t listed in the credits, but that\u2019s what occurred. Wood passed\naway the following year. This Blu-ray contains two versions of the movie\u2026 the\noriginal version Known as The Hollywood Meatcleaver Massacre<\/em> and the\ntheatrical version featuring an intro\/outro with star Lee. A trailer is also\nincluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And Shout Factory is reissuing their out-of-print Blu-ray of\nthe independent science-fiction comedy, Space Truckers<\/em> (1996). Dennis\nHopper, Stephen Dorff, Debi Mazar, Charles Dance, George Wendt, Vernon Wells\nand Barbara Crampton all appeared in this unique genre film from Stuart Gordon\n(Re-Animator, From Beyond<\/em>). The disc should be identical to the 2022\nversion from the distributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sony Pictures is delivering a 4K Ultra HD Steelbook of the\nMel Gibson historical epic, The Patriot<\/em> (2000). It contains 4K editions\nof the theatrical and unrated cuts of the movie, as well as a director and\nproducer commentary, deleted scenes, and featurettes all in fancy packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Universal Studios is releasing a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\ncombo of the rom-com Notting Hill<\/em> (1999), starring Hugh Grant and Julia\nRoberts. The specs include a 4K film restoration presented in Dolby Vision,\nalong with archival bonuses like a commentary with the director, the producer,\nand the screenwriter. Additionally, there are deleted scenes, featurettes,\nmusic videos, and promo materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you shop on Amazon, you can also purchase a 4K Ultra HD\nand Blu-ray set called Steven Spielberg: The Spotlight Collection<\/em>. This\nis an 8-Film Steelbook \u201cLibrary Case\u201d collection containing previously released\neditions of Jaws<\/em> (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind<\/em>\n(1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/em> (1981), E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial<\/em>\n(1982), Jurassic Park<\/em> (1993), Schindler\u2019s List <\/em>(1993), Saving\nPrivate Ryan<\/em> (1998) and War of the Worlds<\/em> (2005) in a new, spiffy\nbox. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, VCI is delivering The Gay Desperado<\/em> (1936)\non Blu-ray. It\u2019s a hit musical comedy with Nino Martini and Ida Lupino about a\nbandit who falls for the kidnapped woman he\u2019s been hired to guard.
