Welcome to another look at highlights arriving on 4K Ultra\nHD, Blu-ray and DVD. After a slow edition, this latest one sees the release of,\nwell, an enormous number of movies. It\u2019s incredibly busy, meaning just about\nevery genre and style is represented here. So, if you can\u2019t make it out to the\nmovies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

ANIMAL FARM \u2013 Based on the classic George Orwell novella,\nthis animated tale follows a group of farm animals who stage a rebellion and\ntake control of the property. As they set-up a new government, the pigs seize\nleadership and begin to enact new and brutal rules on the population. Orwell\u2019s\noriginal story was a satire of communism (with the author\u2019s followup, 1984<\/em>,\ntaking on far-right governments). A 1954 animated adaptation of the book is\nconsidered a masterpiece, but the latest attempt failed to win over critics.\nAbout one-third appreciated what the picture was trying to say and thought that\nit would spark plenty of conversation between kids and parents. But the vast\nmajority felt this was a weak retelling of the story, sanitizing many elements,\nconfusing the story\u2019s message, and weakening its own impact on viewers. This\ntitle is available in a Blu-ray\/DVD combo pack. The voice cast includes Seth\nRogen, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Woody Harrelson, Jim Parsons,\nAndy Serkis, Kathleen Turner and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CALLE MALAGA \u2013 This multi-national, foreign-language\nproduction is set in Tangier, Morocco. After her daughter decides to sell the\nfamily home, her aging mother resists moving out. The parent argues and causes\ntrouble with her offspring, fighting to remain and save her belongings, which\nhave been acquired over her entire life. Naturally, all of these items have a\ndeeper meaning as the story unfolds, and it leads to the rediscovery of a\nromantic relationship. Reaction towards this drama was very upbeat. One or two\nreviewers found the story predictable and lacking in dramatic tension. However,\neveryone else referred to the picture as engaging, with a great lead\nperformance and a compelling script dealing with themes like loss and regret.\nFor now, this is a DVD-only release. It stars Carmen Maura, Marta Etura, Ahmed\nBoulane and Maria Alfonsa Rosso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE CHRISTOPHERS \u2013 The latest feature from Steven Soderbergh\n(Out of Sight, Traffic, Ocean\u2019s Eleven, Contagion, Logan Lucky, Black Bag<\/em>)\nis a dark comedy about a once-famous painter, now retired and living out his\nfinal days. The artist\u2019s children, hoping to earn themselves a nice inheritance\nfor the future, hire a forger to complete some of their dad\u2019s unfinished\ncanvases. But naturally, such an undertaking ends up drawing unwanted attention\nand scrutiny. This picture was ranked highly by the press. A small number\ndidn\u2019t care for any of the main characters and weren\u2019t invested in whether they\nfailed or succeeded. But all others commented that the film was very clever,\nwith great performances and plenty of twists and turns that would keep the\nattention of viewers throughout. The cast includes Michaela Coel, Ian McKellen,\nJessica Gunning, James Corden and Daniel Fearn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

DEEP WATER \u2013 A group of passengers on a commercial flight\nfrom Los Angeles to China experience trouble in the air and end up crashing in\nthe Pacific Ocean. That\u2019s horrific enough, but as it turns out the waters are\nsoon infested with hungry sharks. Those who survive the initial impact must\nwork together on the floating wreckage to survive the ordeal until help\narrives. Write-ups for this disaster\/thriller\/horror feature from Renny Harlin\n(Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea<\/em>) were more positive than negative. About\none-third did complain that the movie was little more than a throwback to old\ndisaster pictures, with thinly written characters and a predictable plot.\nHowever, the consensus was that this effort proved to be surprisingly\nentertaining, delivering enough B-movie action, thrills and amusing one-liners\nto earn it a solid recommendation. Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley, Angus Sampson,\nLucy Barrett and Richard Crouchley headline the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

EDGAR ALLAN POE\u2019S THE MUMMY \u2013 This American micro-budget,\ndirect-to-disc effort (IMDb lists that the production cost roughly $3000\ndollars) has been timed to arrive on disc at the same time as a studio title\ninvolving another creature wrapped in bandages. Presumably, the hope is that\nyou might mix them up online or on the store shelves. The filmmakers here claim\nthat this film is based on the short story \u201cSome Words with a Mummy<\/em>\u201d and\ninvolves an Egyptian priest who raises an ancient wrapped figure from the dead.\nOne assumes the same villainous figure uses the creature to do his bidding,\nwhile two detectives and a college professor set out to stop the monster before\ntheir entire town is ravaged. As noted, no one has seen this picture at present\nand it is debuting on disc and streaming sites. The cast includes George\nStover, Jeff Angel, Deron Morgan, Tara Bixler and Leanna Chamish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

IP MAN: KUNG FU LEGEND \u2013 The famous mythic Chinese martial\nartist was recently the central character in a series of Ip Man<\/em> films\nstarring Donnie Yen. That series ended and a new one starring Dennis To started\nfresh with Ip Man: Kung Fu Master<\/em> in 2021. Set in the 1950s, this\nfollow-up finds the title character quitting his job with the police force and\nsetting out to start his own martial arts academy. Unfortunately, an\nunderhanded Western investor attempts to buy up all the schools in the area.\nWith even those around him selling out, Ip Man must stand tall and fight them\nall off.  This production from China has only been seen by a handful of\ncritics in this part of the world. Those who have seen it state that the\ncharacters are paper-thin and that the story is told in a too familiar way, but\nif you can overlook those flaws the fight scenes are well-staged and\nentertaining. The film is available as a 4K Ultra HD disc or a Blu-ray-only\nrelease. Besides To, it also stars Zhou Xiaofei, Zhang Tingfei and Steven Dasz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

LEE CRONIN\u2019S THE MUMMY \u2013 Also known simply as The Mummy<\/em>,\nthis major studio reboot of the famous monster movie focuses on a news reporter\nand his family living abroad in Cairo, Egypt. When their daughter is kidnapped,\nthe group are frustrated by the lack of progress made by authorities. Many\nyears later when the family have returned to the US, they receive word that\ntheir child has been found and is being sent to them. But upon her arrival, she\nexhibits dangerous, almost supernatural behavior that none of the relatives can\ncope with. The final product split the press, with more panning the film than\npraising it. Almost half complimented the movie for being nasty, gross and also\nliked that it tried to do something different with the title character. But the\nmajority called the final product terrible, stating that the story was\npreposterous, the main character\u2019s behavior unrealistic, and that the picture\nfelt more like a lower-tier Evil Dead<\/em> film (director Lee Cronin helmed Evil\nDead Rise<\/em>) than an actual Mummy<\/em> movie. It\u2019s available as a 4KUltra\nHD and Blu-ray Steelbook, a 4K Ultra HD only, and a standalone Blu-ray. The\ncast includes Jack Reynor, Laia Costa and May Calamawy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

MICHAEL \u2013 The subject of this biopic is Michael Jackson, one of the greatest and most successful musical artists of all time. It details the early years of his life, from his childhood performing as part of The Jackson 5<\/em>, through troubles with his father, and his eventual attempts to break free and start a solo career. In particular, it focuses on the circumstances regarding the recording and release of his iconic album, Thriller<\/em>, and leaves later years (and controversies) out of the storyline. The press had a mixed-negative reaction to this box-office smash. More than one-third noted that the music and performances were well-captured, and that since the film couldn\u2019t legally deal with later scandals, it focused on Jackson\u2019s early life and told its story well. Yet, most did feel that this was a surface-level biopic that didn\u2019t go deeply enough into the pop star\u2019s psychology. They felt it needed to spend far more time dealing with darker matters in the pop star\u2019s life. The movie is available as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo, a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Amazon exclusive Steelbook, a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Walmart exclusive Steelbook, a \u201cLionsgate Limited\u201d 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d (available only through their website), as well as a Blu-ray only release. It stars Jaafar Jackson (nephew of Michael Jackson), Nia Long, Colman Domingo, Juliano Valdi and Miles Teller. Read this site’s review of the movie here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE MORTUARY ASSISTANT \u2013 Based on the 2022 video game, this\nindependent chiller was given a limited release and has been available to\nstream on Shudder for the past few months. A young woman working as an embalmer\nin a funeral home finds herself being tormented by a demon. The supernatural\nforce possesses corpses and commits other kinds of nastiness as the protagonist\nattempts to fight it off. This effort received more pans than it did positive\nnotices. About one-third of write-ups suggested that the movie was\nwell-photographed and had plenty of atmosphere, delivering a few decent jolts\nover its running time. However, the majority stated that after the first few\njump scares, nothing in the film felt fresh or thrilling. They asserted that\nthe events simply repeated themselves and the story\u2019s unrealistic turns took\nthem out of the narrative. It features Willa Holland and Paul Sparks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

NORMAL \u2013 A new sheriff arrives in a small, nondescript\nMinnesota town after the unexpected passing of the previous chief. The recently\nhired protagonist goes about his duties, dealing with minor incidents involving\ntownspeople, yet can\u2019t help but look into the death of his predecessor. He soon\ncomes to the conclusion that the previous sheriff may have actually been\nmurdered by local figures, who just might be part of a violent crime syndicate.\nReviewers generally liked this action\/thriller from director Ben Wheatley (Kill\nList, Sightseers, Free Fire)<\/em>. About one-quarter of write-ups critiqued the\nscreenplay for being messy and filled with plot holes and inconsistencies that\nruined their enjoyment. Yet most critics called the film entertainingly wild\nand crazy, with a great cast, several memorably over-the-top and gruesome\nmoments, and a dark, biting sense of outrageous humor. The title is available\nas a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo, or a Blu-ray only release. Bob Odenkirk,\nLena Hedley, Henry Winkler, Ryan Allen and Billy MacLellan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OBSESSION \u2013 Despite still currently being in the top ten at\nthe box office, this low-budget horror phenomenon is now arriving on disc. The\nfilm tells the story of a lonely young man who pines over a co-worker. After\nbuying a trinket that promises to make any wish come true, he decides to use it\nto make his crush fall in love with him. Things immediately go wrong, as the\nyoung employee actually becomes obsessed with him, following him everywhere and\nseeing all their friends as threats to his attention. Reviewers really liked\nthis picture. A small number punched holes in the plot, didn\u2019t find it scary or\nfunny, and thought the social commentary wasn\u2019t deep or cutting. But the\nconsensus was that this feature was impressively disturbing, showing those of\nthe young filmmaker\u2019s generation that there was a negative side to the lead\u2019s\ncompulsive behaviors. The movie can be purchased as a \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray combo, or as \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d Blu-ray only release.\nMichael Johnston, Inde Navarette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless and Andy\nRichter headline the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

ONE SPOON OF CHOCOLATE \u2013 Also known as RZA\u2019s One Spoon of\nChocolate<\/em>, this action picture comes from rapper RZA (who has directed his\nfair share of films, like 2012\u2019s The Man with the Iron Fists<\/em>). An\nex-military figure with anger issues gets into trouble with the law. He decides\nto move to a small, quiet town where he can make a fresh start. Unfortunately,\ndangerous figures from his past appear to dole out some payback. The\nprotagonist must fight back and also protect the new relationships he has made.\nResponse was mixed towards this picture. Almost half stated that the movie was\nfilled with rage and righteousness, effectively telling a revenge story and\ndelivering a memorable climax. But, slightly more found the pacing slow, and\nthe story itself too simple and cliched to really make a lasting impact on\nviewers. Shameik Moore, RJ Cyler, Paris Jackson, Rockmund Dunbar and Blair\nUnderwood headline the film.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

PILLION \u2013 An introverted young man leading an ordinary life\nmeets and falls for the lead of a motorcycle club. He agrees to be the biker\u2019s\nsubmissive, and also meets others who share his partner\u2019s lifestyle choices.\nInitially, it\u2019s all very exciting, but the longer the main character spends\nspending time with this figure and his acquaintances, the more he begins to\nwonder if he has swapped one form of subservience for another. Critics were\nvery impressed with this independent feature from the United Kingdom and\nIreland, and rated it highly. One or two individuals didn\u2019t find enough drama\nor heat in this story, calling the film too low-key for the relationships it\nwas presenting. All others were fascinated by the movie, stating that it mixed\nromantic comedy and dramatic elements in a unique manner, also dealing with complex\nthemes in a direct and effective way. For now, this Blu-ray is only available\nthrough the official A24 studio website. It stars Henry Melling, Alexander\nSkarsg\u00e5rd, Douglas Hodge and Lesley Sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

QUEEN OF THE RING \u2013 This independent sports drama tells the\nlife story of Mildred Burke, a young housewife in the early 1920s whose life\nchanges after being taken by her husband to a wrestling show. She loves the\nsport and starts to train, beginning a career in professional wrestling by the\nmid-1930s, fighting both female and male opponents. Apparently, Burke only lost\none competition over the course of her entire career. This movie depicts her\nless-than-ideal personal relationships and accomplishments in the ring.\nReaction to the feature was good. About one-quarter of write-ups did note that\nwhile the woman\u2019s story was incredible, the movie told it in an ordinary,\nunexciting manner that left them cold. Still, the majority thought that while\nthe movie had slow spots, the performances were strong and that it was a\ncompelling and interesting story of a remarkable figure whom everyone should\nknow more about. The cast includes Emily Bett Rickards, Josh Lucas, Tyler\nPosey, Walton Goggins and Francesca Eastwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RISE OF THE SUPER TROMETTES \u2013 The latest ultra-low-budget\neffort from independent film production company Troma is set in, appropriately\nenough, Tromaville. A virus infects the male populations and turns them into\nnasty thugs. So, a team of women rise up and fight back against those\nthreatening the female population. And like superheroes, they end up making\ncostumes and using various tools to accomplish their goals. This effort appears\nto be premiering on disc and streaming services. It hasn\u2019t been seen by\nmainstream critics and currently there are only a couple of online reviews.\nWrite-ups suggest it is a typical release from the producers, emphasizing\ngross-out moments and jokes told in bad taste. The notice I read also stated\nthat, despite the decent set-up, it wasn\u2019t the strongest of Troma entries. It\nfeatures Elizabeth D\u2019Ambrosio, Mercedes, Knotty Peach, Jade Theriault and Lloyd\nKaufman (as narrator).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

STARBRIGHT \u2013 This independent fantasy film is described as a\nmodern fairy tale. During an eclipse, an orphan living in a farming town sees a\nstrange star falling from the sky. The celestial body lands nearby, still\nfaintly glowing. An archangel appears, places the star in a locket, and asks\nthe protagonist to serve as its \u201cguardian\u201d. The youngster and the angel must\nprotect the item from various villainous figures who want to take it for\nthemselves. Very few reviewers have seen the final product, and online\nwrite-ups have been mixed. Some call the film flawed, but a sweet throwback to\nmovies of the 1980s, with impressive production values and good performances.\nJust as many commented that there were plot holes and that the pacing was off.\nWith a nearly two-hour-and-thirty-minute running time, they claimed that \nit just doesn\u2019t entrance or impress viewers the way it should. The cast\nincludes Alexandra Dowling, John Rhys-Davies, Ted Levine, Elisabeth Rohm,\nChristine Ebersole, Becky Ann Baker and Gbenga Akinnagbe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

TWO PIANOS \u2013 After a series of personal troubles, a\npromising young French pianist disappears from his home country and becomes a\nteacher in Japan. Years later, he receives word that his mentor would like him\nto return to France and perform a live show with her. The protagonist agrees,\nbut after arriving he randomly meets a boy who looks exactly like him, setting\noff memories and opening old wounds. The lead must deal with his history in\norder to start anew. This mostly French-language feature (with a bit of\nEnglish) was well-received by the North American press. A small number of\ncritics called the film overly melodramatic and found the main character\npassive and difficult to sympathize with. However, most were impressed by the\nstory, stating that the situations revealed were complex, the drama came across\nas authentic, and that the music was stirring. For now, this is a DVD-only\nrelease. It features Fran\u00e7ois Civil, Nadia Tereszkiewicz and Charlotte\nRampling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s just as busy an edition if you\u2019re looking for older\ntitles. Arrow Video is presenting a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD and \u201cLimited\nEdition\u201d Blu-ray of Red Sun<\/em> (1971). This is an international production\nhelmed by Terence Young (From Russia with Love, Thunderball, Wait Until Dark<\/em>)\nand starring Charles Bronson, Toshiro Mifune and Alain Delon. It\u2019s a western\nabout a gang who steal an ancient Japanese samurai sword and the team who set\nout to reclaim it. For this release, the movie was restored in 4K by Studio\nCanal. It is presented in Dolby Vision and arrives with a film historian\ncommentary, a video appreciation piece, a featurette on samurai, a profile of\nco-star Alain Delon, archival TV promos, a trailer and an image gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

88 Films is releasing the In the Line of Duty I – IV<\/em>\n\u201cStandard Edition\u201d Blu-ray set containing the female-centric Hong Kong cop\nfilms Yes, Madam<\/em> (1985), Royal Warriors<\/em> (1986), In the Line of\nDuty III<\/em> (1988) and In the Line of Duty IV<\/em> (1989). The first two\nfeatures star Michelle Yeoh. All four titles were previously released\nseparately, so this is simply a combo pack containing all of those discs in one\ncase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The drama Alice Doesn\u2019t Live Here Anymore<\/em> (1974) from Martin Scorsese (Raging Bull, After Hours, Goodfellas, The Departed, The Irishman<\/em>) is arriving as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo and a standalone Blu-ray. The story follows a widowed woman and mother who tries to make a new start for herself and a waitress and singer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scorsese was involved in this release, and has approved the new 4K digital restoration of the movie which is presented in Dolby Vision. Bonuses include a commentary with Scorsese and cast members Ellen Burstyn, Jodie Foster, Kris Kristofferson, Diane Ladd and Alfred Lutter. There is also a new conversation with Burstyn, as well as editor Marcia Lucas, a making-of documentary, and a trailer. A booklet with writing on the movie is also included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo of The\nCrying Game<\/em> (1992). This Oscar-winner (for Best Original Screenplay) from\nNeil Jordan (The Company of Wolves, Interview with the Vampire, Michael\nCollins, Ondine, Greta<\/em>) follows an IRA recruit who befriends a kidnapped\nBritish soldier. After things go wrong, he decides to make good on a promise he\nmade to his captive, leading to some unexpected situations. The film has been\ngiven a new 4K restoration supervised and approved by Jordan, and presented in\nDolby Vision. Additionally, there is a Jordan commentary, new interviews with\nJordan and star Stephen Rea, a 2005 making-of documentary on the movie, an\nalternate ending with director commentary, and essays on the film and its\nimportance. A Blu-ray only edition is also available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the Paul Newman western Hud<\/em> (1963) is getting a\n4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo and a Blu-ray only release. Newman plays a greedy\ncattle rancher who leads his family towards ruin. This film has also been given\na 4K restoration and is presented in Dolby Vision. It comes with audio excerpts\nfrom a 1974 interview with director Martin Ritt (The Spy Who Came in from\nthe Cold, Murphy\u2019s Romance<\/em>), a new discussion with co-star Sally Field, a\nrecent talk with Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakens on the work of\ndirector of photography James Wong Howe (Sweet Smell of Success, Seconds<\/em>)\nand how influential the movie\u2019s images were. There is also an episode of Inside\nthe Actor\u2019s Studio featuring Newman, and an essay on the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you like Hong Kong action pictures, you can pick up Deadly\nKung Fu Factor<\/em> (1978) aka The Delivery<\/em> on Blu-ray from Dark Force\nEntertainment. It\u2019s about a young man who takes a job as a delivery man, only\nto discover he is working for a crime syndicate and must fight his way to\nfreedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Some East German productions are arriving on Blu-ray. DEFA\nFairy Tales<\/em> are, indeed, productions that were made while the country was\nunder Russian occupation. You\u2019ll receive their takes on Snow White<\/em>\n(1961), Little Red Riding Hood<\/em> (1962), as well as Mother Hulda<\/em>\n(1963), The Devil\u2019s Three Golden Hairs<\/em> (1977) and Snow White and Rose\nRed<\/em> (1979). Deaf Crocodile Films released a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d of this set a\nfew months back, but is now preparing a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d of the release.\nBonuses should be identical, with the only change coming in the packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Film Masters is delivering the science fiction title Destination\nMoon<\/em> (1950) on Blu-ray. It promises a 4K scan from original archival\nelements. You\u2019ll also receive a major bonus with the inclusion of an additional\ntitle, Flight to Mars<\/em> (1951).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Howard Huges in Hollywood: Volume 1<\/em> is a Blu-ray from\nFlicker Alley containing the films Two Arabian Nights <\/em>(1927) and The\nRacket<\/em> (1928). Specs state that the titles have been given new 2K digital\nrestorations, and feature film expert commentaries, 44 minutes of outtakes from\nThe Racket<\/em>, a look at Hughes and his influence on Hollywood in the\n1920s, a look at Hughes\u2019\u2019 trip to the first Academy Awards, as well as promo\nmaterials and other extras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino Lorber is delivering a few features as well. The\nLove Trap<\/em> (1929) is a comedy about a poor chorus girl who falls for a rich\nman. His family doesn\u2019t approve of the relationship, leading to conflict. \nThis Blu-ray comes with a film scholar commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pictured to the left, A Man Named Rocca (1961) is an early French crime picture starring Jean-Paul Belmondo about a man who sets out for revenge against the crooks who set up his best pal. Studio Canal delivered the 4K restoration for this Blu-ray release, which also arrives with a movie expert commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Scoumoune<\/em> (1972) aka Hit Man<\/em> is another\nFrench title starring Belmondo, Claudia Cardinale and Michel Constantin about\ntwo Marseille criminals fighting the law and rival outfits in order to survive.\nThe Blu-ray features a film historian commentary and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also purchase a \u201cStandard Edition\u201d Blu-ray of the\nJohn Woo World War II picture Windtalkers<\/em> (2002), courtesy of MVD\nMarquee Collection. This picture features a group of soldiers protecting Navajo\nMarines who are using their language in order to send and retrieve important\nmessages to the front lines of battle. It stars Nicolas Cage, Adam Beach, Peter\nStormare, Mark Ruffalo, Roger Willie, Christian Slater and Jason Isaacs. A word\nof warning, though. Unlike the out-of-print 2018 Blu-ray that contained both\nthe director\u2019s cut (which runs 20-minutes longer) and theatrical version, this\nedition only contains the theatrical cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paramount Pictures are repressing a couple of their recent\ntitles. The first is the enjoyable killer-alligator horror picture Crawl<\/em>\n(2019), which is arriving as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook. One assumes\nthe contents are identical to the regular 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo, only\nin fancier packaging. And The Untouchables<\/em> (1987) \u201cLimited Edition\u201d 4K\nUltra HD Steelbook, which sold out upon its release, is getting a reprint if\nyou missed it the first time around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hong Kong action epic Full Contact<\/em> (1992) is\nappearing as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray from Shout Factory. Chow Yun-Far stars\nin this tale about two friends who join a band of criminals, only to regret\ntheir decision and have to fight their way out. This well-regarded action\npicture from the late, great Ringo Lam (City on Fire, Twin Dragons<\/em>) is\nappearing on disc with a 4K scan from the original camera negative, presented\nin Dolby Vision. You\u2019ll also get a film historian commentary, an interview with\ncast member Simon Yam, a talk with the martial arts director for the title, as\nwell as a Hong Kong movie authority interview about the film, a location\ngallery, and promo materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SRS Cinema is delivering the horror remake Savage\nVengeance<\/em> (2023) on Blu-ray. It comes with multiple commentaries, trailers\nand more. The kaiju film Super Legend God HIkoza<\/em> (2022) is also\nappearing on Blu-ray. A trailer, a making-of and trailers are also\nincluded.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you visit the Terror Vision official website, they have\nplenty of exclusive low-budget genre films available for purchase. This week, Hide\nand Go Shriek<\/em> (1988) will be available. Additionally, the parody Student\nBodies<\/em> (1981) is being released as a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD\/Blu-ray\nand soundtrack CD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troma is putting out a new title this week. You can also\npick up The Sugar Cookies<\/em> (1973) as a \u201cTromatic Special Edition\u201d\nBlu-ray, which contains an archival introduction from Lloyd Kaufman, archival\ncast interviews, a trailer and more. If you haven\u2019t seen it, it\u2019s about a\nproducer and her lover casting an acting student and attempting to transform\nthe performer into a replica of a dead star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tetsuo: The Bullet Man<\/em> (2001) is coming out on\nBlu-ray from Unearthed Films. This is the third and final chapter in the\nJapanese Tetsuo<\/em> film series, which chronicled individuals slowly\ntransforming into mechanized beings. The disc contains a commentary, a\n\u201cmulti-material\u201d version, photo gallery and trailers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universal Studios is presenting Blu-rays of the Marlene\nDietrich picture The Flame of New Orleans<\/em> (1941), as well as the\ndrama\/romance film Foxfire<\/em> (1955) with Jane Russella and Jeff Chandler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Howard the Duck<\/em> (1986) was a notorious, critically savaged flop upon its original release (I remember, I was there as a kid at an opening weekend screening), but over the years it has built a cult following. Now, you can pick up a 40th<\/sup> Anniversary 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook. And I will admit, the film’s score is fantastic, even if the picture is something of a mess. The contents appear to be identical to previous releases, only in new packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up Blu-rays of the Marlene Dietrich\/John\nWayne film Pittsburgh<\/em> (1942), The Song of Songs<\/em> (1933) with\nDietrich and The Spoilers<\/em> (1942) starring Randolph Scott, John Wayne\nand, you guessed it, Marlene Dietrich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VCI is delivering the Poverty Row Classics Blu-ray,\ncontaining the pictures East Side Kids<\/em> (1940) and Let\u2019s Get Tough! <\/em>(1942).\nNo bonuses are listed on the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visual Vengeance specializes in issuing low-budget,\nshot-on-video genre films. This week, they\u2019re actually putting out a European\ntitle with some production value. The \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d Blu-ray of Laurin\n<\/em>(1989) is a shocking period picture about a German killer in a small\nvillage preying on children. A young girl ignored by her family, as well as her\nfriends, become the killer\u2019s latest targets. The Blu-ray states that it\ncontains a 2K HD transfer of the original 35mm film elements, complete and\nuncut (in both English and German-language versions). There is a film historian\ncommentary, a VHS rough cut of the picture from the director, a 55-minute\ndiscussion with the moviemaker, and early shorts from the director.\nAdditionally, you\u2019ll get a making-of documentary, cast and crew interviews, a\ndiscussion with a film historian, a Bavarian Film Award presentation, a talk\nwith a movie expert on the title, photo galleries, a mini-poster, a sleeve\nfeaturing the original video release art, essay, a mini-postcard set, a VHS\nsticker sheet, trailers and more.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coming-of-age beach drama movie Last Summer<\/em> (1969)\nis being released on Blu-ray from Warner Archive. Barbara Hershey, Richard\nThompson and Bruce Davison play teens who become very close, and turn cruel\nwhen another young woman wants to join their group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Whole Grain Pictures is releasing a Blu-ray of Red\nSorghum<\/em> (1987), a period drama from China. It follows a young woman forced\nto marry the owner of a wine distillery. When he dies unexpectedly, she must\ntake it over. The disc contains a video essay on the feature, a discussion with\na Chinese film historian and a trailer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
