This \u201cLimited Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set from\nRadiance Films will be available for purchase on September 1st<\/sup>,\n2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While most Radiance Films releases highlight international\nproductions, not every title is from other parts of the world. Lately, we\u2019ve\ngotten the likes of smaller cult pictures from the US, including Palindromes<\/em>\nand Cutter\u2019s Way<\/em>. You can now add The Hot Spot<\/em> to the list, a\nsteamy neo-noir thriller from Dennis Hopper (who served as director, but does\nnot appear in the movie). It was a smaller release that earned a bit of\nattention but didn\u2019t become a big box office hit. Still, the movie has slowly\ngenerated a fan following over the years, and you can now pick it up as a\n\u201cLimited Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo set from the distributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While this is a combo pack, I should note right off the bat\nthat I only received a preview Blu-ray copy of the movie. Specs state that the\noriginal 35mm camera negative was restored in 4K and is presented in Dolby\nVision. Alas, I can\u2019t comment on the image quality on the 4K disc, but the\naccompanying Blu-ray looks very striking. There\u2019s some natural grain here and\nthere, with an overall excellent appearance that looks very strong and far\nbetter than earlier Blu-rays and DVDs. The colors (lots of reds, yellows,\nbrowns, etc.) really pop and look much brighter here. One can see plenty of\nsweat, as well as dirt and stubble on the characters on this Blu-ray. So, as\nimpressive as it appeared to me, it\u2019s likely even sharper with even more\nvisible perspiration and grime on the 4K Ultra HD dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the story, it follows Harry Madox (Don Johnson), a\nman with a mysterious past. He arrives in a small Texas town and instantly\ntalks his way into a job as a used car salesman under owner George Harshaw\n(Jerry Hardin). He quickly gets a lay of the land and asks coworker Lon Gulick\n(Charles Martin Smith) about various aspects of the town. Harry is also charmed\nby young accounts manager Gloria Harper (Jennifer Connelly), who appears to be\nin some sort of trouble with customer Frank Sutton (William Sadler). Another\nissue arrives in the form of the car dealership owner\u2019s wife Dolly Harshaw\n(Virginia Madsen), who boldly attempts to seduce the protagonist. While Harry\nunsuccessfully tries to fend off Dolly\u2019s advances and help Gloria out, he also\ntakes a curious interest in a bank down the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The temperatures both in the story and between the\ncharacters are consistently on the rise. As more is revealed about Harry, we\nlearn that he does carry some vices and is considering robbing that nearby\nbank. But the two females prove to be major distractions. The lead has to carry\non with Gloria without raising her husband\u2019s attention, also finding himself\nattracted to Gloria and desperate to help and learn more about her\nplight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since this is a neo-noir, there is initially a bit of\nmystery as to whom the femme fatale might be, but by the final act it\u2019s very\nclear that one individual will manipulate and do whatever it takes to get what\nthey want, and throw anyone else to the curb in the process. Madsen is a blast\nto watch in her role as unfaithful wife, and this film also marks one of the\nfirst adult roles for Connelly, who makes a memorable impression. This is an\nentertaining neo-noir and the screenplay really has a lot of fun turning the\nscrews on Harry as he becomes more involved and tangled in everyone\u2019s lives\nthan he ever intended.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also a very atmospheric tale that is well-photographed.\nEveryone looks like they are overheated and dealing with extreme temperatures,\nwhich suits the tale well. And if that wasn\u2019t evocative enough, there is even\nan exciting and visually impressive blaze in the movie in which the main\ncharacter must literally fight a raging fire. While very few of the characters\nare innocent (with one exception) and one can imagine how the story might\nstruggle to get any viewer on Harry\u2019s side, he and the charismatic cast sell\nit. I wasn\u2019t entirely sure what everyone\u2019s motivations were, and the approach\nactually managed to hook me and keep me guessing. It is consistently\nentertaining to watch secrets get slowly revealed, see power moves, and the\nleads and supporting characters attempt to take advantage of those around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This is admittedly a long film running just over two hours,\nbut still feels zippy and deftly handled by director Hopper. He creates a\ntangible atmosphere and everyone in the picture is so good (and looks\nincredible too). Additionally, the story is entertainingly pulpy without\nveering into camp, that the mystery keeps one glued from beginning to end.\nAnyone who appreciates film noir and neo-noir pictures is sure to get a kick\nout of this production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extras are equally enjoyable. The first is a short\narchival interview with director Dennis Hopper that aired on French TV during\nthe film\u2019s release. It\u2019s funny, mostly because it appears that the crew is\ntalking to Hopper while he\u2019s wandering through what looks like Charles de\nGaulle Airport in Paris while waiting for a flight. Others in the terminal are\nstaring as the celebrity moves past with the crew, answering questions about\nhis earlier film Colors<\/em> and The Hot Spot<\/em>, noting how excited he\nis to be clean from drugs and alcohol and working on new and important\nprojects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a 2021 discussion with co-star Virginia Madsen, who\ntalks about her memorable role in the movie. She admits that she was a little\nconcerned about portraying the brash and very manipulative Dolly character.\nHopper encouraged her to just go for it and not hold back in any manner. Madsen\nstates that while she wasn\u2019t sure if she liked the movie at the time of\nrelease, she has come around and really appreciates it now, correctly\nacknowledging that her work in the film was bold and holds up well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

William Sadler also appears for a talk about his part in the\nfeature. He talks about meeting Hopper, immediately saying yes to the part\noffered, and his experiences on-set working with the icon. He clearly had a\ngreat time. Like Madsen, everyone seems to remember that it was consistently\nhot and uncomfortable during the Texas shoot, with the temperature always\naround 100 degrees fahrenheit. They note that Hopper was very encouraging and\nprofessional. And that, for some reason, he always wore a jacket or suit the\nentire time and never seemed bothered by the steaming temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A film expert and authority on Dennis Hopper also appears to\ngive insight in this period in the star\u2019s career. Hopper had recently gotten\nover addiction problems and was on the straight-and-narrow, earning acclaim for\nroles in Blue Velvet<\/em> and Hoosiers<\/em>, and was interested in\ntransitioning to directing. The previously mentioned Colors<\/em> (1988) had\nbeen a major commercial and critical success, but Hopper had run into trouble\nwith producers on his follow-up Catchfire<\/em> (which he had his name taken off\nof) and was looking to bounce back. The expert notes many of the similarities\nbetween the seemingly different projects that Hopper chose to helm as director,\nand notes that while this picture wasn\u2019t a big commercial success, it was a\nstylish return to form for the moviemaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A crime fiction authority also appears to give some\nbackground detail about the movie and its source material. This feature was an\nadaptation of the 1953 Charles Williams crime novel Hell Hath No Fury<\/em>.\nHe explains the original story, what Hopper might have found appealing about\nit, and goes into the differences between the book and final movie. The speaker\nalso notes that the dark edge and somewhat downbeat denouement may have been\npart of the reason that audiences didn\u2019t initially respond to the film upon its\noriginal release. A trailer is also included on this disc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hot Spot<\/em> delivers exactly what it promises, a\ntwisty and heated neo-noir with memorable characters and some impressively\ntense moments. The disc also looks great, and anyone who appreciates the movie\nwill also enjoy the extras that give more background on the production, as well\nas paying tribute to its creators in film and on the written page.
