October is here, which means there are a great many indie horror pictures, a few interesting alternatives, and a bunch of impressive upgrades to some classics. So, if you can’t make it out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!

BIG NEW RELEASES!

THE BARN PART III – Back in 2016, an independent horror film (backed in part by Kickstarter donors) called The Barn was released. It paid homage to genre titles from the 1980s, featured a group of supernatural monsters features reminiscent of Halloween celebrations (one creature had the head of a pumpkin, another’s resembles an ear of corn). The film earned a following and a sequel followed in 2022. Now, a third chapter has arrived. A group of survivors from the previous entry have attempted to get on with their lives after the terrifying events that befell them a few years ago. However, it seems that the same three creatures are ready to return and attack once again. So far, only a handful of online reviewers have seen the picture, but their reaction was upbeat. They noted that while the story has become perhaps too familiar after the two previous chapters, this effort is bigger and slicker than its predecessors and will please horror enthusiasts. It stars Courtney Gains, John Kassir, Jesse Jupiter Flux, Felissa Rose, William Ragsdale and Kelli Maroney.

BUNKER HEIGHTS – Speaking of low-budget indie horror, this effort attempts to combine monster movie tropes with a crime film. An investigator in a small town discovers too late that his city officials are corrupt and are involved in a massive heist. When one of the crooks is bitten and infected by a strange creature during the robbery, it leads to bigger problems. Soon, monsters begin rampaging throughout the town. Again, this picture was made with a very small budget, and so there hasn’t been much publicity for it available at this point. For now, those interested in the film will just have to take a chance on it in order to see if the genres are effectively combined in this story. The movie is arriving on both Blu-ray and DVD. The cast includes Drew Fortier, Hannah Foreman, Chaney Morrow, Paul T. Taylor, Floyd Ewing Jr., David Ellefson, Vinnie Dombroski and Violent J.

FINDING EMILY – One night at a party, a university student meets the woman of his dreams. Unfortunately, the protagonist can’t read all the phone number digits given to him, and has no idea how to find the lady. The lovesick student sets out to find her, searching across Manchester. Along the way, he encounters a psychology student who is jaded about love and is writing a paper describing how “romantic attachments cause madness”. She decides to help him in his search, but as they get closer to finding the individual, they become attracted to each other. This British romantic-comedy was well-received by the press. A small number of reviewers called the picture formulaic and bland, noting that there wasn’t enough chemistry between the leads to keep them interested in the story. However, everyone else did think the two central characters were charming, thought there were a few laughs, and found the picture to be a sweet, good-natured throwback to efforts like Notting Hill and Love Actually.

GATOR FACE – A group of visiting college students partying in Florida head out to the beach for one last day of fun in the sun. They find a quiet group of cabins on the coast and are soon attacked by the occupants, who are members of a cult. The kids are taken inland to a swamp and introduced to the group’s alligator-owning leaders who want to pay pilgrimage to a reptilian god. In order to survive, the protagonists must find their way out of the marsh and avoid being slaughtered and/or eaten. This independent horror picture earned more positive notices than negative ones. About one-fifth of write-ups suggested that while well-produced, there were no shocks or surprises in the story and that the campy, over-the-top tone didn’t help to generate tension. But the majority appreciated the movie as a throwback to chillers from the 70s, which impressively utilizes nasty make-up effects, real reptiles and gruesome shocks to maximum effect. It features Kiara Mitjans, Ellie Shaddix, Amariah Dionne, Nikolas Kolasinski, Barron Regan, Tabitha Brownstone and Iain Smith.

HOT SPOT – Just over a decade ago, Polish writer/director Agnieszka Smoczynska scored a hit with the eccentric mermaid feature The Lure. Her latest (which she directed, but did not write) is a dystopian science-fiction tale. It is set in a world controlled by AI. An assassin is hired by his digital overlords to infiltrate a rebel group with the capacity to rewrite code and undermine their rulers. He encounters the leader, who attempts to alter his consciousness and change his identity. Alas, critics were not impressed with this international co-production from Poland, Greece and Norway. One in five stated that the movie was convoluted, but also full of fascinating ideas, good performances, and stunning visuals that made it oddly compelling. But everyone else called it a jumble that didn’t fully develop its ideas and came across as messy and unsatisfying. Andrzej Konopka, Noomi Rapace, Reika Kirishima, George Aurimas Cris, Fillipa Kaye and Niki Sereti headline the film.

KIM NOVAK’S VERTIGO – This documentary provides details about the life and career of actress Kim Novak, as delivered by the subject herself. An interviewer talks to the star about her rise in Hollywood, early roles in pictures like Jeanne Eagels and Vertigo, and why she eventually chose to leave the spotlight and move to Oregon. According to a clip from the feature, Novak reveals that after years playing various roles, she began to feel like her personality was changing into a mash of character traits from her onscreen roles. Viewers learn about the steps she took to regain control of her life. Response was generally good towards the film. About one-fifth of notices believed the movie was essentially just an interview with movie clips and that it didn’t offer as much insight as hoped for. But the majority found the subject and discussion enlightening and inspiring, not only for highlighting her career accomplishments, but how she overcame issues related to being a celebrity. For the time being, this is a DVD-only release.

MODELS VS. WEREWOLVES – Full Moon Features are an independent genre film producer and distributor that started in the 80s with the Puppet Master series. More recently, they’ve become known for the Evil Bong and The Gingerdead Man franchises. Their latest follows a group of models who decide to rent an Airbnb cabin in the woods, have some fun, and create new content for their social media sites. Little do they know that a werewolf is terrorizing the area. The ladies find themselves having to fend off not only the original monster, but others within the group who have been bitten and are turning into hairy creatures. This effort appears to be premiering on disc and streaming sites, so there are only a few online reviews available. Most suggest that the film delivers good B-movie fun and exactly what you’d expect from the studio (although a couple were disappointed at the use of CGI or possibly AI with the creatures. It features Sarah Moliski, Alexa Reddy, Bella Mraz, Rebecca Stoughton, Sophie Swiszcz, Dee Wallace (IMDb also lists guest appearances from Helen Hunt and Tim Thomerson).

SHRINE OF ABOMINATIONS – If you’re looking to support homemade indie pictures, this 40-minute stop-motion animated effort may be for you. The makers have spent six-plus years on the project (receiving funding from Kickstarter donors) and describe it as a “psychedelic fantasy-horror epic” with all sorts of wild puppets and creatures doing battle. The synopsis for the feature reads, “On the cursed world of Orbus Kaal, Gar-Gnargorath tries to invoke the cosmic forms of Demotep to begin his universal plans of revenge and domination.” This picture earned an award for its VFX at the CineUnderground Film Festival in northern Italy. If it sounds like a good time to you, then you can now pick it up on Blu-ray. Directors Ross Kennedy and Skinner seem to have done everything here, including the voices for the various characters.

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!

As noted, there are plenty of older titles receiving high-definition upgrades. Synapse Films are unleashing a “Standard Edition” 4K Ultra HD, as well as a standalone Blu-ray of the cult horror/comedy Frankenhooker (1990). This picture from Frank Henenlotter (Basket Case, Brain Damage) involves a New Jersey-based civil servant with an unhealthy interest in science and biology. When his girlfriend dies in a tragic lawnmower accident, the lead manages to recover her head, and sets out to rebuild her using body parts from prostitutes.

This is actually a pretty amusing movie, and if you appreciate other outrageous titles from Henenlotter, it is certain to entertain. During its initial release, Henenlotter actually got a quote for the movie from Bill Murray (who had been editing his movie Quick Change in the same building)… “”If you only see one movie this year, it should be Frankenhooker“. This particular release contains a 2025 4K Ultra HD restoration of the film presented in Dolby Vision. You’ll also get a director and make-up effects designer commentary, an interview with Patty Mullen (who plays the title character), a featurette on the make-up effects, a discussion with co-star Jennifer Delora, Delora’s photo scrapbook from the production, and a trailer. If you want to know more, you can read a full review of the release by clicking on this link.

Arrow Video is presenting a “Limited Edition” 4K Ultra HD and a “Limited Edition” Blu-ray of the Tony Scott action picture The Last Boy Scout (1991), starring Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans. The plot follows an ex-secret service agent and former pro-football player who uncover a conspiracy revolving around professional sports. The original 35mm camera negative was scanned by Warner Bros. and restored by Arrow Video for this release. It’s also presented in Dolby Vision. Additionally, the title arrives with a film historian commentary, an interview with writer Shane Black, and a 2026 discussion with co-star Danielle Harris. There is also an appreciation piece on director Scott, a 2024 talk with Black about the movie, extended and alternate scenes, trailers, image galleries and two separate drafts of the original screenplay.

Alliance Entertainment recently released Project Hail Mary (2026) on just about every format. Now, a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Amazon exclusive “Limited Edition” Steelbook is being made available for purchase. The contents should be the same as in other editions, but in new and presumably spiffier packaging.

The indie comedy/drama By Hook or By Crook (2001) is arriving on Blu-ray from Altered Innocence. It arrives with a filmmaker commentary, a video essay on the picture, director and producer notes and letters, archival ephemera, shorts from the moviemakers, deleted scenes, outtakes, crew pics and wrap party images, archival interviews, a trailer and a booklet with writing on the movie.

Criterion is presenting Eclipse Series 5: The First Films of Samuel Fuller Blu-ray set, which is exactly what it claims to be. The set contains early efforts from the moviemaker like I Shot Jesse James (1949), The Baron of Arizona (1950) and The Steel Helmet (1951). The second film even stars Vincent Price. Also included in the set is an essay on the movie’s and how they showed the director’s development before he went on to make Pick Up on South Street, Shock Corridor, The Naked Kiss and The Big Red One.

The distributor is also delivering the Cannes-winning The Shout (1978) on Blu-ray. Alan Bates, John Hurt and Susannah York star in this tale of a composer and his wife whose lives are turned upside down after the arrival of an uninvited guest. The strange figure claims that his screams can cause instant death and starts to manipulate them. The film has been given a 2K digital restoration approved by director Jerzy Skolinowski and cinematographer Mike Molloy, new interviews with Skolinowski and the producer, excerpts from the director’s appearance at a 1997 film festival, a short UK television program on the making of the movie, and an essay on the feature.

You can purchase a “Standard Edition” Blu-ray of The Arrival from the Darkness (1921) and St. Wenceslas (1930) courtesy of Deaf Crocodile Films. These are two very well-regarded, rare silent Czech pictures. Apparently, they were the most elaborate and expensive productions of their day in their homeland. In addition to the movies (with new scores), you’ll also get a film historian commentary, a visual essay on the movies, four rare short films from the era, a compilation of behind-the-scenes footage from Czech silent pictures, the only surviving fragment of an early Czech horror title, and a 48-page booklet with writing on the releases.

The Cat City Collection Blu-ray contains the animated features Cat City (1986) and Catcher: Cat City 2 (2007). One mouse does his best to try to save his kind. The first picture comes with a film expert commentary, other animated shorts from the same director, an interview with an authority on Hungarian animation, a 2020 and a 2023 interview with the director, and a special about the feature from the National Film Institute of Hungary. This effort came during the wave of 70s disaster pictures and followed a mad bomber blowing up amusement park rides. It starred George Segal, Richard Widmark, Timothy Bottoms, and Henry Fonda. The movie was also noted for being released in Sensurround, an audio feature that makes it feel as if the seats in the theater were vibrating during the ride sequences. It isn’t a great picture, but it does have a few memorable sequences. I recall that one early version of the film available on video featured extra nastiness during one or two of the coaster crash scenes, and Kino appears to have located this footage for their release.

Disc specs include a 4K picture restoration from the original camera negative presented in Dolby Vision. For the unrated edition, it is presented in high-definition on Blu-ray. You’ll get two film expert commentary tracks, a trailer, a 2018 documentary on disaster pictures of the 1970s, and an interview with writer Tommy Cook. The release comes with reversible art and a slipcase.

Lionsgate is making the Rob Zombie’s Firefly Trilogy box set available. The first is the “Definitive Collector’s Edition” 2-disc Blu-ray set of the horror classic The Blair Witch Project (1999). This is the found-footage feature about a trio of filmmakers investigating the title character and finding themselves lost in the woods. This edition includes the filmmaker-approved revitalized original theatrical cut and festival cut restored from the original Hi8 videotapes and 16mm film elements, plus the original 35mm theatrical exhibition release. There are new interviews with filmmakers and actors Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams. Other new bonuses include expanded Blair Witch lore, the Matt Blazi Project, mythos about the character, a featurette on the eternal impact of the movie, footage on iconic artifacts, and a tribute to the cinematography.

There is a legacy audio commentary on the original cut with the filmmakers and producers, the well-regarded Curse of the Blair Witch mockumentary that aired on TV during the film’s release, an archival exploration of the legend, a legacy bit, an analogue horror in the digital world spot, deleted scenes, footage from Cannes in 1999, director interviews, fear sections, alternate endings, B-roll and trailers.

Another Lionsgate exclusive is the Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray “Limited Exclusive” Steelbook. It’s a futuristic musical set in a world where organ failure is common. A biotech company offers life-saving transplants for a price. Those who can’t pay up are hunted by a sinister REPO man. This feature has been given a 4K remaster approved by director Darren Lynn Boussman and is presented in Dolby Vision. The discs contain a new director and co-creator commentary, an establishing shot featurette, a look at the film’s cult success, another new bit about the “Shadowcast”. Additionally, archival bonuses include an archival 2007 director and cast commentary, deleted scenes with optional commentary, a from-stage-to-screen featurette, video sing-alongs, webisode featurettes, a trailer and a poster gallery. The packaging includes character cards, artwork discs, a slipcover and new artwork.

Mondo Macabro are presenting some “Standard Editions” of older releases. Contents should be identical to previous editions, just without the elaborate packaging.

The independent feature The Inner Voice (1995) is arriving as a “Remastered Collector’s Edition” Blu-ray from Ruby Max Entertainment. In addition to the film, it contains a soundtrack CD, auditions, and a trailer.

Severin Films is rereleasing several titles that were once “Limited Edition”. A couple of them are just older titles with new slipcovers. You can pick up The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) “Limited Edition Slipcover” 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray edition, a “Standard Edition” 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set of The Black Cat (1981) (a standalone Blu-ray is also available). Both the films are also presented on Blu-ray in the set, and there is even an extra Blu-ray with lengthy video journals on the production of both titles.

Sony Pictures is giving the horror movie The Pope’s Exorcist (2023) a 4K Ultra HD release. Russell Crowe stars in this tale about the Vatican’s chief exorcist fighting for the soul of a possessed young boy. The movie has never been released on 4K, so one should expect an uptick in picture quality with this edition.

Those who appreciate microbudget horror films can now pick up a Blu-ray of Sumerika (2008) from SRS Cinema. The plot synopsis suggests it’s inspired by the film of Lucio Fulci and features a Sumerian curse causing possessions, and the blind criminologist who tries to stop it. Bonuses include backstage footage, a gag reel, and trailers.

Troma is delivering a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo of the low-budget effort Surf Nazis Must Die (1987). This is an epic love triangle story from director David Lean (The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, A Passage to India). The film has been given a new 8K restoration from the 65mm camera negative, which is also presented in Dolby Vision. Naturally, all of these films have been released in 4K before, so this is essentially a repackaging that puts them all into one box.

For those who collect 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray “Limited Edition” Steelbooks, the studio is putting out two recent releases.
