Written and directed by Don Thacker (his first and, to date, only feature film), Motivational Growth<\/em> is a really weird film.\u00a0 It\u2019s the type of movie that will split audiences down the middle \u2013 some will believe it\u2019s the Citizen Kane<\/em> of talking fungus movies, while others will rush out of the theater, flipping the bird towards the screen the whole way.\u00a0 It\u2019s understandable, because Motivational Growth<\/em> is either very good, or it\u2019s very bad.<\/p>\n

Motivational Growth<\/em> has the vibe of a student film.\u00a0 The concept is fantastically original \u2013 it really is unlike anything that audiences are likely to see – but it doesn\u2019t feel completely fleshed out.\u00a0 It feels like a twenty minute short that has been padded to feature length.\u00a0 There are parts of the film that get confusing and hard to follow, as if Thacker was intentionally trying to keep his audience from figuring things out too quickly.\u00a0 Other parts feel unfinished, as if the film ran out of time or money, or as if the filmmakers were shooting from an early draft of the screenplay.\u00a0 From a script standpoint, the film is a bit uneven.<\/p>\n

While his writing skills may be suspect, Thacker\u2019s direction is pretty solid. \u00a0He makes great use of his limited resources, choosing to set the entirety of Motivational Growth<\/em> in a single apartment, using basically a single actor to tell the story; Ian even breaks the fourth wall Woody Allen-style in a few places, helping the audience to better understand his predicament by explaining it to them first-hand. \u00a0The simplicity lends a kind of hipster atmosphere to the film.\u00a0 The movie has a cool nostalgic vibe to it as well, with retro-looking television shows intercut into the action, and a really nifty 8-bit computer game-esque musical score.\u00a0 Ian even gets animated into a vintage video game at one point in a scene which is a fun deviation from all of the apartment dwelling.\u00a0 It\u2019s all just as weird as it sounds, but these kooky eccentricities just make the strange movie seem that much stranger.<\/p>\n

And then, there\u2019s The Mold.\u00a0 The Mold is a great character; the combination of Jeffrey Combs\u2019 voice work and the animatronic puppet (which was designed by Andy Hosmer of The Creation Adventure Team<\/em>) is both hilarious and intimidating.\u00a0 The beast looks like something that stepped out of a Troma movie; it\u2019s crass and disgusting, but has plenty of personality for a culture of spores, constantly referring to itself in the third person, saying things like \u201cThe Mold is here to help, Jack\u201d and \u201cThe Mold knows\u201d (The Mold refers to Ian as Jack, no matter how many times Ian corrects it).\u00a0 The Mold works in mysterious, passive ways, and he is in complete control of the situation.\u00a0 Now, it\u2019s not exactly Hannibal Lecter or anything, but as far as antagonists go, there have been far worse than The Mold in the annals of cinematic history.<\/p>\n

Motivational Growth<\/em> is a pretty low-brow movie, but it attempts to have a message.\u00a0 As for a recommendation, that\u2019s tricky.\u00a0 The viewer\u2019s enjoyment will depend of whether or not they \u201cget it.\u201d\u00a0 And, frankly, it may be the type of movie that takes multiple viewings to \u201cget.\u201d\u00a0 If you\u2019re the type who loves offbeat, disgusting movies, Motivational Growth<\/em> is for you.\u00a0 If you\u2019re more of a purist with your monster movies, skip it.\u00a0 One thing is certain; it should be seen with a group, because half will love it, and the other half will hate it.\u00a0 The split will make for a fun car ride home.<\/p>\n
