4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray/DVD Roundup for October 20th, 2026

Welcome to another look at highlights arriving on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. The last couple of editions have been a little slow, but that’s all about to change now. This one is jam-packed with big Hollywood efforts, independents and more. It looks like there’s something here that should appeal to just about everyone. So, if you can’t make it out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!

BIG NEW RELEASES!

THE BRINK OF WAR – Angel Films is a studio that specializes in religious-themed features, but this week they are presenting this biopic detailing a period in the presidency of Ronald Reagan. It is 1986, and the US and Russia appear to be on the brink of nuclear war. With generals and other officials making war plans, Reagan manages to set up a meeting with Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev in an attempt to broker peace and deescalate the conflict. Reaction to the feature was more positive than negative. Nearly one-third suggested that, while well-intentioned, the film was essentially one long conversation that simplified the event in order to paint one character as the absolute hero. Still, the majority believed that most of the film worked, and that the great cast helped create enough tension and drama to earn the movie a recommendation. It stars Jeff Daniels, Jared Harris, J.K. Simmons, Hope Davis and Branka Katic.

CITIZEN VIGILANTE – Notorious director Uwe Boll is noted among genre film fans for, well, a notorious catalog of independent pictures that have not fared well with critics or audiences. This includes House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, Bloodrayne, Postal and several more. His latest feature involves a US Army official who becomes enraged at crime on the streets. The man takes the law into his own hands, becoming a vigilante and gunning down those whom he believes have bypassed the law. Reportedly, the movie has an extreme anti-immigrant tone. So much so, that in a published interview the lead actor was “dismayed” by the film (stating he was told his character wouldn’t be portrayed as a hero). Critics hated the movie. One or two wrote that the tale pushed buttons and would spark debate, but all others called it fascistic and terribly made, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The cast includes Armie Hammer, Costas Mandylor, Désirée Giorgetti and Steffen Mennekes.

DEAD SOULS – Based on a Russian novel of the same name, this film from noted cult writer/director Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid & Nancy, Straight to Hell, Walker) transplants the original story to the American old west. A mysterious man arrives in an Arizona border town. He cozies up to government figures and wealthy landowners, offering payment for the names and birthdates of Mexicans who have died on their land. As the wealthy become more and more suspicious, strange things are eventually revealed about the visitor’s motivations. This picture was funded in part on Kickstarter and made on a slim budget, but the press still appreciated it. A couple of reviewers found the film so strange that they couldn’t get onto its wavelength, and were disappointed by the ending. Still, everyone else called it a unique take on the western that won them over with its surrealness and deeper themes. It features director Alex Cox as the new arrival, as well as Xander Schloss, Dick Rude and Amariah Dionne.

FIREFLIES AT EL MOZOTE – This historical war movie is centered around the El Mozote massacre and civil war in El Salvador. It’s the mid-80s, and the story introduces a 10-year-old boy whose village is attacked by invaders. He is the only person to escape with his life, and sets out to honor his family by seeking revenge. The youngster ultimately finds a rebel group. They attempt to get him to safety so that he can tell his story and alert the world of the crimes being committed. This independent feature hasn’t been seen by a great many reviewers yet, and the ones who have seen it were a little lukewarm about the final product. They suggest that while the cast and the overall message is good, the film struggles to maintain suspense and doesn’t make a lasting impression. Mena Suvari, Jeff Fahey, Paz Vega, Yancey Arias and Juan Pablo Shuk headline the movie.

FRANZ – Agnieszka Holland is an award-winning Polish filmmaker known for films like Europa Europa, The Secret Garden, Green Border and many others. Her latest is a biopic of famous Czech author Franz Kafka. We see the writer’s life story, including the somewhat rough treatment he experienced as a child, and experiences as a young adult, which helped inspire his unusual and surreal tales (which also feature plenty of thematic commentary on the world around him). Overall, the press was positive about this European production. One-quarter didn’t care for the moviemaker’s creative tangents and stated that the movie didn’t clarify what was really going on in the writer’s mind. Still, the majority really liked the stylistic devices of the feature, stating the artistic license on display was the perfect way to get viewers under the skin and into the head of Kafka. It stars Idan Weiss, Peter Kurth, Aaron Friesz and Marta Dancingerová.

FREE AT HEART – A teenage boy enjoys an idyllic life in a small German town. One day, one of his father’s close friends passes away, and so the adult brings home the son of his late pal. The lead youth helps comfort the new arrival and the two start to open up to each other about their lives and personal experiences. After a period of time, they begin to develop feelings, and the protagonist is forced to navigate how to bring the matter up with his parents. This German-language drama won some awards at film festivals, but hasn’t received a lot of attention in North America. Notices from its homeland are good, but not spectacular. Most have commented that the story is sensitively told and well-acted, but also that it feels obvious and inauthentic in the way it ratchets up tension during the final act. The cast includes Linus Moog, Aurel Klug, Oli Bigalke and Annika Kuhl.

HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL – Broadway musical enthusiasts may be interested in this recording of the Tony Award winning show. This particular version was captured in the West End of London, England. Using music and dance, its narrative features various Greek mythic characters, including Orpheus, Hades and Persephone, crossing paths and dealing with various conflicts. As noted, this musical has won many awards, and so a simple recording of the show would appear to deliver a similar kind of experience to those who can’t get out to see it.  Write-ups were almost uniformly upbeat. One voice didn’t like the songs, and so they didn’t care for the show. Everyone else thought it was a high-energy, dazzling production with great tunes that would impress those who enjoy musicals. It features Reeve Carney, Andre De Shields, Amber Gray, Eva Noblezada and Patrick Page.

I WANT YOUR SEX – A young man lands a job working under a famous artist known for her boundary-pushing exhibits. Not long after starting the position, the woman tells him that she would like him to become a sexual muse to inspire her latest work. He agrees, but finds himself out of his depth as he deals with sex, obsession and, eventually, murder. This indie effort from Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation, Nowhere) was very well received by critics. A handful did complain that events were presented in such an over-the-top manner that they couldn’t buy into the drama. All others called it chaotic and wild, but extremely entertaining, with great performances and several memorable encounters. This title will be released as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo, and as a standalone Blu-ray. Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman, Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders, Johnny Knoxville, Margaret Cho, Roxanne Mesquida, Charli XCX and Daveed Diggs headline the picture.

ICE CREAM MAN – In this independent horror picture, a sinister figure in an ice cream truck arrives in a small town. Naturally, his tasty treats earn him immediate business from kids. But after consuming his confections, the youngsters turn homicidal and begin murdering adults. A young boy who is lactose intolerant tries to avoid being forced to eat ice cream and attempts to stop the villainous seller before the entire town is wiped out. This horror/comedy did not impress most reviewers. One-quarter of notices claimed the movie was a hoot, with gruesome deaths and impressive make-up effects that would appeal to genre fans. However, the overall consensus was that the movie didn’t make the most of the intriguing scenario. They called it derivative and repetitive, focusing on the bloodshed instead of the story and ultimately leaving viewers cold in the process. It stars Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O’Reilly, Kiori Mirza Waldman, Karen Cliché and Eli Roth (who also co-wrote and directed the picture). LEGEND OF THE WHITE DRAGON – This independent action picture appears to incorporate superhero storytelling with martial arts. After a devastating disaster leaves a city in disrepair, authoritarian forces take over and the town’s superhero population is hunted down. When a lost crystal with magical powers appears on the scene, the villain attempts to find it and become all-powerful. One legendary fighter/hero decides to make a final stand and win the crystal for the people. Reaction to this picture was very poor. One or two thought the film was well-produced and had a charismatic lead actor who made the story interesting. But the vast majority were annoyed, stating that the picture was all about world-building and setting up sequels, without actually delivering a compelling story, characters, or action. The movie is available as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo. The cast includes Jason David Park (who died between production and the release of the film), David Ramsey, Lenore Zann, Aaron Schoenke, Cerina Vincent and Michael Madsen (in his final film role).

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE – The He-Man toy line and animated series will be familiar to anyone who grew up in the 1980s. This is the second attempt to turn the product line into a live-action feature film series (after a 1987 flop produced by Cannon Films). In this edition, a young man working a thankless day job on Earth discovers that he was originally from Eternia. Apparently, he was sent to our world as an infant after the evil Skeletor took control of his home world. The protagonist regains the Sword of Power, allowing him to travel back to Eternia and lead a revolution against the sinister ruler. This reimagining fared reasonably well with reviewers. Slightly less than one-third stated that the film was overlong and bloated, and that the action and humor didn’t land. But the majority called the picture cheesy fun. They appreciated the movie’s sense of humor and the work of the cast, suggesting it would entertain those who fondly remember the character. The movie is available as a 4K Ultra HD-only release, a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Amazon exclusive Steelbook, and a standalone Blu-ray. It features Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Jared Leto and Alison Brie.

MILE END KICKS – A 24-year-old young woman decides to pursue her dream of being a music critic in this Canadian rom-com. She packs up and moves from Toronto to Montreal to cover the indie rock scene. Inexperienced, the woman ends up befriending a band she likes, hoping to publicize them. The journalist finds herself being drawn romantically to not one, but multiple group members. Naturally, this creates confusion, complications, and awkward situations while trying to get a handle on how to be a proper writer. The press spoke well of this effort. A few notices described the young characters as unlikable and found the storytelling messy. But the consensus was that the movie felt remarkably accurate and true-to-life in its depiction of an inexperienced journalist navigating complicated relationships and figuring out exactly how to move forward with her career. They also complimented the lead performance. Barbie Ferreira, Devon Bostick, Stanley Simons, Juliette Gariépy and Jay Baruchel headline the movie.

ONE NIGHT ONLY – This studio rom-com from Hollywood is set in a world where pre-marital sex is outlawed, except for one night a year. Naturally, there is a lot going on during this annual event, and the story follows two New Yorkers who want more than just a one-night stand. The pair meet early on and sparks fly, but must deal with friends and other complications over the course of the evening as they attempt to reunite. Critics were split on this title, with slightly more panning the picture than praising it. Those who enjoyed the movie commented that, while the story was predictable, the talented performers and interplay made it worthwhile. Unfortunately, the problems noted earlier were also shared by those who disliked the picture, going further and noting that the plot made no sense, the jokes were dull, and the movie was overly earnest, failing to push comedic boundaries. It is available on disc as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo or a standalone Blu-ray. It stars Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, King Princess, Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton.

OVER YOUR DEAD BODY – A film director with a stalled career and his wife, a bitter actress, find their marriage falling apart. In order to minimize the angry episodes and try to save their relationship, they decide to retreat to a cabin on a lake. But not long after they arrive, it becomes clear that each of them actually intends to murder their spouse. The showdown gets increasingly outrageous, eventually drawing in friends and acquaintances. Reviewers generally enjoyed this picture. A little more than one-quarter of notices didn’t care for the concept, and felt that the bitter characters lacked depth, leaving the audience cold. Still, most were very amused by the picture. They believed that all the characters in the story were hilarious, and appreciated the script’s many twists and turns, noting that some of the situations presented were wild and creatively disturbing. The cast includes Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Paul Guilfoyle, Keith Jardine, Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis.

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!

If you’re looking to check out a film from an earlier era, you have options. Radiance Films specialize in international features, and you can now pick up a pair of new titles from the distributor. The first is the Italian crime film The Monster (1977) aka Il Mostro, about a struggling, mean-spirited news reporter and wannabe author. When a serial killer begins slaying locals, he finds a way to cover it, but manipulates events in order to benefit his own career, which ends in tragedy. This is a ”Limited Edition” Blu-ray that contains a 2K restoration of the movie from the original negative, a movie expert commentary track, a 45-minute retrospective piece with interviews featuring cast and the make-up artist. You’ll also receive a discussion with an Italian cinema expert and a trailer. You can read my thoughts on the movie and the disc right here.

You can also pick up a “Limited Edition” Blu-ray of Visitor Q (2001), a shot-on-video feature from cult director Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer, 13 Assassins). It follows another troubled writer who pushes boundaries to impress his superiors, only to get his family involved in some extremely disturbing acts. The specs on the disc include a new transfer of the movie from the original master beta tape, a commentary from a Miike biographer, a new interview with Miike and cast members, a visual essay on the title, and a trailer. A DETAILED DISC REVIEW SHOULD BE ON THE SITE SOON.

Toy Robot Video launched recently with a few notable releases. This week, the company is releasing a Blu-ray of the horror film Watchers (1988). Based on the book by Dean R. Koontz (but with plenty of changes to the source material), this adaptation tells the story of a teenager who befriends a stray dog being hunted by a monster, and the federal government. The cast includes Corey Haim, Barbara Williams, Michael Ironside and Lala Sloatman. The disc promises an HD master of the movie with additional restoration and color work. Bonuses include a new interview with the director, as well as recent talks with cast members Ironside, Williams, and Sloatman. A trailer, TV spot and stills gallery are also featured on the disc. A detailed review of this disc can be found by clicking on this link.

Another Toy Robot release is the Japanese crime film Manhunt (1976). It features a cop framed for a crime he didn’t commit, who goes on the run to prove his innocence. This effort stars Ken Takakura. Besides a high-definition master with a 4K restoration, the disc contains a movie expert commentary, an intro with a Japanese film authority, a discussion on the title from critics, and two text essays (one on star Takakura and the other on the movie itself). You’ll also get a trailer and stills gallery.

Arrow Video is delivering a “Limited Edition” 4K Ultra HD and a “Limited Edition” Blu-ray of Futureworld (1976), which was the sequel to the 1973 smash hit, Westworld. This time out, a reporter is invited to visit a newly updated version of the theme park from the original film. He discovers corruption and more menacing automatons. I don’t recall this follow-up being particularly strong (if memory serves, much of it involves star Peter Fonda running around under the park with empty hallways and water pipes). Still, the film does have its fans who will be thrilled to see a big image upgrade. Amazon MGM Studios have provided a 4K film restoration from the original negative, which is presented in Dolby Vision. The disc features a movie historian commentary, a new talk with the producer, a 1976 behind-the-scenes featurette, and numerous promotional materials. Naturally, a booklet is included with the disc, packaged with a reversible sleeve and slipcover.

Christine F. (1981) is arriving as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo and a standalone Blu-ray from Criterion. This is a German drama about an aimless teenager living with her single mom. The youngster gets into trouble when she begins dating a drug dealer and becomes an addict. You’ll get a new 4K restoration of the movie approved by director Uli Edel (Last Exit to Brooklyn, Body of Evidence), a new interview with the filmmaker, an appreciation from Sean Baker (Tangerine, Anora), a 2022 interview with the movie’s star, screen tests, and an essay on the feature.

The Complete Kubrick 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray box set is one many have been waiting for. Kubrick has made several of the best films of all time and this edition contains all of his movies and a few shorts, presented with the best picture quality possible. The contents include Fear and Desire (Premiere Version) (1952), Killer’s Kiss (1955), The Killing (1956), Paths of Glory (1957), Spartacus (1960), Lolita (1962), Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999). All of the movies and three extra shorts have been given 4K restorations and are presented in Dolby Vision, and come with hours of bonus features. One curious extra is the inclusion of the international version of The Shining (I’ve never seen it, but it’s said to be a shorter, more streamlined version of the original). There are so many more extras that there isn’t enough room here to go into it all, but if you like Kubrick and have a lot of cash to spare, you’ll want to pick this up.

A 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set of the Oscar-winning classic, The Silence of the Lambs (1991) is arriving from the distributor. The movie was previously available on 4K through Kino Lorber, but the rights expired and are now in the hands of this distributor. This version features a 4K digital restoration approved by cinematographer Tak Fujimoto in Dolby Vision, the movie on Blu-ray, and a second Blu-ray with bonus features. The movie-discs feature a 1994 cast and crew commentary, while the third disc has a critic interview, deleted scenes, 2005 discussions with director Jonathan Demme and star Jodie Foster, four documentaries featuring hours of talks with cast and crew, a behind-the-scenes featurette, storyboards, and a trailer. Essays on the movie are included as well.

While it may seem strange, Disney/Buena Vista is giving the horror hit Barbarian (2022) a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray and a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook release. This is because Disney currently owns Fox, so they own the rights to many more chillers than they used to. The plot involves a young woman who rents a house while traveling to a job interview, only to find it double-booked, and with terrifying things occurring inside. Extra features include a special about the movie featuring director Zach Cregger (Resident Evil), a filmmaker commentary and deleted scenes.

Kino Lorber is delivering the mystery/comedy/drama Bluebeard (1972) as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo and a Blu-ray only release. It’s set in Austria during the 1930s and tells the tale of a wealthy pilot and nobleman hiding a dark secret… one that might have something to do with all of his deceased previous wives. Richard Burton and Raquel Welch star in the film. For this release, the original camera negative has been given a 4K restoration, and is presented in Dolby Vision. It comes with a film historian commentary, an interview with a movie expert, a special on American/Canadian director Edward Dmytryk (The Caine Mutiny, Mirage), a booklet with essays on the movie and new packaging artwork.

Flic Story (1975) aka Cop Story is a French biopic about a detective desperately seeking to catch and arrest noted criminal Emile Buisson. The movie stars Alain Delon and Jean-Louis Trintignant. It arrives on Blu-ray with a 4K restoration provided by StudioCanal, a film historian commentary, a video essay and trailer.

The film adaptation of the comic opera The Pirates of Penzance (1983) is also getting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo package. Kevin Kline, Angela Lansbury, Linda Ronstadt, Geroge Rose, Rex Smith and more appear in this tale about a singing pirate searching for adventure and romance. The original camera negative has been given a 4K restoration for this release and is presented in Dolby Vision. Additionally, a film historian commentary is included, along with an interview with co-star Rex Smith and a trailer.

Leomark Studios is delivering a Blu-ray of the indie horror picture. The Devil’s Deal (2023).

Paramount Pictures is presenting the comedy/horror film Scary Movie (2000) as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray “Limited Edition” Steelbook. The picture was released in 4K last month, but not in Steelbook packaging. Disc contents should be identical to previous versions.

Powerhouse Films is releasing a trio of titles this week. The Italian/French feature Lucky Luciano (1973) is appearing as a “Limited Edition” 4K Ultra HD only, as well as a “Limited Edition” Blu-ray. This is a biopic of the mobster that details his life between 1946 and 1962. It features Gian Maria Volonte, Charles Siragusa (playing himself) Rod Steiger, Edmond O’Brien and Vincent Gardenia. It arrives with a 4K restoration of the film from the original negative, presented in Dolby Vision. You’ll get three versions of the picture, the international cut, the Italian edition, and the US edit. There is a 1973 TV special on the production, a critical appreciation of the movie, a trailer, and an image gallery of promo materials. A booklet with essays, and interviews is also included.

The Sinful Nuns of Saint Valentine (1974) is also receiving a “Limited Edition” 4K Ultra HD release, as well as a “Limited Edition” Blu-ray. Adapted (loosely!) from the writing of Victor Hugo, his Italian film is considered a “Nunsploitation” classic and follows a 16th century woman forced into being a nun. She ends up having to contend with a nasty Inquisitor. The release promises a 4K restoration presented in Dolby Vision, a film critic commentary, a 2026 special feature about the director, a 49-minute “Nunsploitation” doc, and a booklet with essays and more info on the title.

And the Italian/German, shot-in-London “Giallo” thriller What Have You Done to Solange (1972) is arriving in a “Standard Edition” 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo, in addition to a “Standard Edition” Blu-ray. The contents should be similar to the previous edition release, only in simpler packaging.

Shout Factory is presenting the recent vampire horror/comedy Abigail (2024) as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray “Limited Edition” Steelbook. Again, the discs should be exactly the same as the release from last year on 4K, only in more elaborate packaging.

If you enjoy fantasy films from Hong Kong, A Chinese Ghost Story (1987) and its sequels, A Chinese Ghost Story II (1990) and A Chinese Ghost Story III (1991) are all available as “Limited Edition” 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combos. The first picture follows a tax collector who ends up in a temple and falls for a ghost residing there. This pair end up facing off against a tree demon. It is difficult to find information about the three releases and the bonus features included, but one should expect improved picture quality and (hopefully) some extras.

The Cable Guy (1996) is arriving as a “Limited Edition” 4K Ultra HD Steelbook from Sony Pictures. If you were around in the mid-90s, this studio comedy was a big summer release that did reasonably well at the box office, but also received some backlash from critics and audiences for its darker, oddball tone. Truth be told, it was a very funny satire that was, in many respects, ahead of its time. The plot follows a recently separated and lonely man who is visited by a cable installer. The strange visitor tries to strike up a friendship, and the customer agrees to hang out with him. But soon, the stalker-ish “cable guy” invades the lead’s life and privacy, causing tension and conflict when the lead attempts to reconnect with his ex.

The movie parodies media culture of the 90s and has earned a sizable cult following. Directed by Ben Stiller, it stars Jim Carrey, Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann, Jack Black, George Segal, Diane Baker, and features Eric Roberts, Janeane Garofolo, Andy Dick, David Cross, Owen Wilson, Kathy Griffin, Bob Odenkirk, and many more. You’ll get a 4K restoration of the movie in Dolby Vision, a new, 30th anniversary conversation about the movie with Ben Stiller and Broderick, an archival commentary with Stiller, producer Judd Apatow, and Carrey, a gag reel, deleted and extended scenes, a making-of featurette, rehearsals, a nighttime camera test, Leslie Mann’s audition footage, a music video and a trailer.

It has been out several times before, but Universal is releasing a 45th anniversary 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook of the classic, An American Werewolf in London (1981). The contents should be the same as in Universal’s previous release of the film, only in new packaging.

The studio is also delivering a Blu-ray set of the live-action adaptations of Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat (2000) and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2003). Mike Myers played the title character in the first movie, while Jim Carrey starred in the set’s second title.

Finally, Warner Archive is releasing Blu-rays of catalog titles that include Blackboard Jungle (1955), The Hucksters (1947), Jewel Robbery (1932) and Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938).
